A classic horror story: having to amputate a leg because you stepped on a nail. Thankfully, Adj. A/Prof. Chen Yongsheng 陈永胜 – an orthopaedic trauma surgery consultant at JurongHealth Campus – was able to provide the patient with a novel alternative treatment to prevent this. Together with a team led by Adj. A/Prof. Vigneswaran Nallathamby – who heads NTFGH’s plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery division – the patient was able to avoid amputation and reconstruct the affected foot. #OneNUHS #TransformingCare

Today, Nur Faathimah Assyifa is a happy 4 year old who likes to paint and ride her scooter. Unbeknownst to most, she was born with her heart chambers and abdominal organs on opposite sides, along with a large hole in the wall between her heart’s lower chambers and a missing pulmonary artery. This is a story of perseverance, faith and love; not just from her parents, but also from a team of multidisciplinary specialists from NUHCS - National University Heart Centre, Singapore and National University Centre for Women and Children. Read the full story to find out how Assyifa's life was forever changed, for the better. Ching Kit Chen, Dr Senthil Kumar Subbian, A/P Winn Maung Maung Aye, Laszlo Kiraly #OneNUHS #TransformingCare

The future is now! With our IMAGINE AI Expo firing on all cylinders, several announcements made the headlines. Here's a summary. 1. Robot helpers, named Missi, will be rolled out as part of a pilot at NUH from April 2025. These robots can communicate in various languages, including English, Mandarin, Tamil and even Korean and local dialects. They will have the capability to guide patients around the ward, deliver medicine across hospital facilities and even convey instructions on the dosage. Amazed already? That's not all they can do. 2. A WhatsApp chatbot, called Champ, is being deployed for NUHS patients to send them reminders to update their doctor on their blood pressure measurements, and to exercise. It is provides personalised reminders to patients and help doctors collect health information from patients more conveniently. To date, at least 9,000 NUHS patients are enrolled on the programme. 3. The Saw Swee Hock School Of Public Health will launch a new centre for AI in public health by July 2025. Collaborating with the World Health Organization and regional health ministries, the centre will focus on building new AI solutions to address public health challenges and evaluate the ethics of innovations used in healthcare. Bridging the future of healthcare. An inspiration to us all, Dr Yujia Gao's work truly represents our commitment to care, research and innovation. We look forward to seeing more of HoloMedicine! Thank you DesignSingapore Council for the feature! #OneNUHS #OurPride
Have you heard of “HoloMedicine”? It’s a pioneering application of mixed reality in the medical sphere – and yes, “holo” is short for “hologram”. Think of how Tony Stark manipulates holographic models in the Iron Man movies, and you’ll get a sense of how surgeons such as Dr Yujia Gao are visualising internal organs before and during medical procedures. A liver and pancreatic surgeon at the National University Health System (NUHS), and its Assistant Group CTO, Dr Gao believes these technologies offer enormous benefits by improving surgical and clinical processes. In his journey of implementing the technology at NUHS, he has mirrored the design thinking process by empathising, ideating, prototyping, and testing solutions to a range of barriers – from technological shortcomings to human acceptance. He has also built a team of tech innovators to help him along. It’s still in its early days, but Dr Gao has become a global leader in the effort to bring HoloMedicine to fruition. Thanks to him, future surgical patients may just benefit from shorter, more effective procedures that allow for faster recovery. – Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, People of Design celebrates the everyday visionaries who are delivering extraordinary impact through design. These innovators defy the stereotype that design is only for designers or that it is merely about aesthetics – it is a tool for positive change that is accessible to everyone. #DesignSingaporeCouncil #PeopleOfDesign
