Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) launched our first Net-Zero Energy Building at Tuas. Minister of State for Law and Transport Murali Pillai SC was the Guest-of-Honour at the groundbreaking ceremony. Much thanks to our Engineering & Project Management (EPM) Division colleagues who conducted value engineering with our partners for this building to optimise on lifecycle energy and carbon costs. Special thanks to our partners HUATIONG CONTRACTOR PTE LTD, Tien Seng Engineering Pte Ltd, consultants Asia Infrastructure Solutions, GreenA Consultants, Meinhardt Singapore, ONG&ONG PTE LTD and Rankine&Hill. Located at Tuas Terminal Gateway, this building will house a new Port Operations Control Centre (POCC) in the west. The new POCC will augment our vessel traffic management capabilities and maintain the navigational safety in our waters as Tuas Port gears up to handle 65 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container volume by the 2040s. To reduce emissions and road trips for the groundbreaking ceremony, the onsite elements are kept to a minimum, with guests at our new Maritime Innovation Lab (MIL 3.0) at One North. When completed, the building will offer green office spaces to co-locate synergistic maritime startups and enterprises in the business and industrial districts of the Tuas ecosystem. This development has leveraged on energy modelling and efficiency by design that significantly reduced the expected energy consumption of the building and maximised the on-site generation of solar energy. The on-site rooftop and building attached photovoltaic system can generate more than 2.4 million kWh of green electricity annually – equivalent to powering more than 500 4-room HDB flats every year. This means generating enough renewable energy to offset the expected operating power consumption when completed, thereby reducing our emissions, and doing our part in making our operations sustainable. At the same time, the office spaces within will be installed with Passive Displacement Ventilation (PDV) systems that are more energy efficient than conventional air-conditioning systems. The Building Applied Photovoltaic (BAPV)-cladded façade also doubles up as a passive design feature to insulate external heat transmission into the building. We also welcome startup and enterprises with innovative sustainable building technologies to pilot their solutions. This building will undergo all five Green Mark 2021 sustainability certification. This underscores our commitment to the Public Sector sustainability efforts and the Singapore Green Plan. MPA looks forward to the successful completion by 2027 and continuing to support and collaborate with like-minded partners to ensure that Maritime Singapore is future-ready!
