About us

Telling stories. Inspiring action. We unearth stories of people doing good in Asia and share them with a global community - because we believe stories have the power to inspire meaningful contribution. Through stories, we connect those doing good who could use mass support, storytellers who need their stories shared; and people who’d love to help but don’t know how to get involved. We motivate people to act. We want to build an engaged global community, contributing skills, resources, time and effort, to improve the lives of those who are helped and those who are helping. We evoke compassion and encourage hope. We aim to empower individuals with the conviction that each has the power to contribute to the greater good. Together, we can make a real difference in people’s lives. Our Better World is the digital storytelling initiative of the Singapore International Foundation.

  • “I’m 75 now, older than many trees in Singapore. I know this because I’ve planted tens of thousands over decades,” Grant shared with us during our visit to Pasir Ris Park. 🌳 Grant, the founder of the Green Volunteers, has dedicated over 40 years to preserving green spaces across Southeast Asia. As he walked us through the park, a place where he’s planted many trees, he reflected on Singapore’s evolving approach to sustainability and his hopes for the future. Grant’s mission goes beyond planting trees; it’s about cultivating a lasting legacy of love for nature and creating a greener, more sustainable home for generations to come. Through his rewilding efforts with the Green Volunteers, the group is walking the talk of Singapore’s Green Plan to plant one million trees over the next decade. Inspired by these planting efforts? Discover how Free Tree Society is also driving the greening of urban spaces by empowering communities to plant trees and create a future where people and nature thrive together. Explore their story in the latest edition of our environment series: 🌱 https://lnkd.in/ghfQb622

Prof. Winston Chow challenges you to think bigger. 💡 In his latest blog post, he redefines innovation as more than what we build — it’s about how we connect, adapt, and organise our lives. Facing pressing challenges like climate change requires us to rethink not only our tools but also our relationships with each other and the environment. True innovation begins with shifting our mindset to see sustainability as a collective responsibility. A better world is not just a dream — it’s within reach. With the tools, knowledge, and inspiration already in our hands, will you take the next step towards building a harmonious and sustainable future? • Imagine a future where buildings don’t just stand tall, but also heal the planet. That is the beauty of bamboo, a sustainable material that absorbs carbon dioxide instead of emitting greenhouse gases like concrete.🎋 By adopting bamboo in construction, Bamboo House India is paving the way with this eco-friendly practice that also uplifts local communities by offering sustainable livelihoods. This vision is shared by us in Singapore, where we're dedicated to sustainable building practices. Farizan R., a board member of Singapore Green Building Council, champions this commitment by advocating for bamboo and other eco-friendly materials in the construction industry. Bamboo House India and Farizan demonstrate how, when we come together with a shared vision in the region, we amplify the impact of these green innovations. Shall we build a greener future together? • With hearts full of hope and hands ready to create change, Singapore’s Gen Zs are championing innovation for a greener tomorrow! 🌏 Victor Tang, Series Lead of Our Better Earth, reflects on how Singapore’s youths are equipped with technology, digital connectivity, and, most importantly, an urgent drive to redefine our relationship with the planet. He sees this in three extraordinary eco-warriors—Jodie Monteiro of Ferticlay, Inez Alsagoff of Coral Gardeners, and Nuryanee Anisah of Commenhers—each united by a shared commitment to building a sustainable future. Through passion and purpose, our young changemakers are planting the seeds of hope and creating ripples of positive change for generations to come. • On 3rd November, we watched 3 inspiring films from Our Better Earth at Earth in Focus, Singapore Nature Film Festival. These films are from our environment series that covered three themes: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐭 - Exploring how we can reset our habits to reduce our impact on the environment. 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 - Discovering how people have started to restore our natural environments. 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 - Rethinking our relationships with our environment and innovating for a better earth. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭(𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬): Personal stories, like the founder of Free Tree Society who was inspired by her Australian heritage and gardening with her grandmother, showed how individual connections can spark community action. 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: Partnerships with organisations, government bodies, and educational institutions were crucial. Examples included collaborations with Enterprise Singapore, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Singapore which helped provide expertise and support for sustainability programs. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: Environmental education and individual actions are vital. Every small effort, like saving a straw or planting a tree, can collectively make a significant impact. We encouraged everyone to empower themselves to make a change by questioning the environmental impact of their actions. What can you do now? 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫: Believe in your ability to make a difference. Every action counts, no matter how small. 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝: Whether through volunteering or starting your own initiative, your efforts contribute to a better planet. 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝: Think about the legacy you want to leave behind. Your personal journey towards sustainability can inspire others. A big thank you to Earth in Focus, Singapore Nature Film Festival, and our panel speakers: Victor Tang (Series Lead at Our Better World), Lydia Lubon (OBW Storyteller, and Programme Manager of Free Tree Society), and Tatiana Siufi (Co-Founder of Vidacity, a sustainability innovation hub located in the heartlands of Singapore).
