👩🌾 Smallholder farmers can be empowered to become business owners, who are able to liaise directly with institutional buyers. Providing support for them to build their skills, sharpen their business management abilities, and develop their understanding of stakeholders can go a long way in helping them to operate their businesses more effectively. 🌾💼 The Jollibee Group's Farmer Entrepreneurship Program enables smallholders in the #Philippines to build capacity, gain access to markets, and improve their livelihoods while honing their skills and knowledge. ✍️ Through the Jollibee Group Foundation, they also collaborated with Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan to 'train the trainers', by upskilling local partners and farmers who can organise and coordinate among their communities. That is the ethos adopted in the market-oriented approach taken by PRISMA - Australia-Indonesia Partnership as it works to build smallholder farmers' resilience to climate change, introduce product and production innovations, address food security, and reduce poverty. 🚜💡🍚 PRISMA (The Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Promoting Rural Incomes through Support for Markets in Agriculture) is a partnership between the governments of #Australia and #Indonesia to grow agricultural markets in rural Indonesia. Creating tangible and impactful change in sustainable agriculture requires partnerships across sectors. 🤝💰 Targeted capital and innovative models, such as blended finance, can unite stakeholders across the private, public, and philanthropic sectors to align on shared goals, manage risks, and scale solutions tailored to each community’s unique conditions. This is illustrated by a case study on Temasek Foundation and Abler Nordic’s partnership that we presented in our latest report, "Seeding the Future: Transforming Smallholder Farms for a Sustainable Tomorrow", co-authored by the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) and Wavemaker Impact, and supported by the Philanthropy Asia Alliance (PAA). Recognising the opportunity to support Indonesia's smallholder farmers to transition to more sustainable agricultural practices amid the urgent need for oil palm tree replanting, Temasek Foundation paired up with Abler Nordic, a public-private investor building financial inclusion across Africa and Asia, to pilot a blended finance model that combines public, private, and philanthropic capital. Through this project, Temasek Foundation hopes to make sustainable oil palm replanting accessible for smallholder farmers in Indonesia, while positively impacting both people and planet. 👉 Swipe to learn more. The Southeast Asia School Meals Coalition Summit in Siem Reap, Cambodia, held from 18-20 November, highlighted the transformative potential of school meal programmes in advancing multiple #SDGs, including child nutrition, education, and local agriculture, while addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change and food system resilience. PAA’s Associate Director, Reginald Lee, CFA, spoke on a panel about “Partnerships for Optimal Success,” emphasising the vital role philanthropy plays in de-risking pilots and fostering cross-sector collaborations. He shared examples of initiatives by #PAA members that are scaling school feeding programmes across the region. During the summit, we also had the opportunity to visit Preah Dak Primary School, where we witnessed the positive impact of the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme. It was truly inspiring to tour the school and serve breakfast to the children, deepening our connection to the programme’s life-changing effects. 📚🍽️ Co-hosted by the Governments of Cambodia, the Philippines, and Korea, and organised under the global School Meals Coalition, the summit brought together leaders from Southeast Asia and beyond to discuss ways to ensure every child in the region receives a nutritious meal every day by 2030. Smallholder farmers are the backbone of Southeast Asia’s agricultural sector, and their resilience is essential for a sustainable future. This new report, co-authored by Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) and Wavemaker Impact, and supported by #PAA, underscores the need for targeted financing to drive effective, context-specific solutions that are already making a difference. By leveraging catalytic capital from private, public, and philanthropic sectors, we can regenerate food systems and support smallholder farmers. Earlier this year, PAA launched our Sustainable Land Use Community to scale impact more effectively and quickly across the geographies. Looking back on an energising and impactful #ClimateWeekNYC last month, I’m excited to share some key moments that continue to inspire our collective journey forward. 💡 The conversations we had and the partnerships we built have reinforced the importance of working together to tackle climate challenges in #Asia and beyond. Some highlights from our time in #NewYork: 1️⃣ At the World Economic Forum's GAEA Agora, I was honoured to share that the Philanthropy Asia Alliance is collaborating with our members Dalio Philanthropies and TPC (Tsao Pao Chee) to launch a new catalytic ocean collaborative at Davos 2025. This initiative will bring together philanthropists, governments, and corporates to unlock more capital for the ocean economy. 🌊 Next year, we’re also excited to introduce the first-ever Asia edition of WEF’s GAEA Agora as a permanent feature at the Philanthropy Asia Summit, building on our strategic partnership with WEF and its #GAEA initiative. 2️⃣ Climate change and health are deeply interconnected. In collaboration with our members Wellcome Trust and The Rockefeller Foundation, Temasek Trust and PAA are supporting the launch of a new climate and health funders’ coalition, led by Wellcome and The Rockefeller Foundation. This initiative aims to drive investment and scale evidence-based action to tackle the climate crisis while improving health outcomes. 🌿🩺 Together, we are catalysing impactful efforts that address these intertwined challenges head-on. 3️⃣ During our co-hosted roundtable with Asia Philanthropy Circle and ClimateWorks Foundation, we explored how global and regional donors can align strategies to scale climate solutions in Asia. 🌏 We discussed urgent regional challenges, such as rising sea levels and heatwaves, and how philanthropy in Asia is evolving toward strategic, portfolio-based giving. Thank you to all the incredible partners and thought leaders who made these discussions and initiatives possible. Partnerships are vital for addressing global challenges. 🌍 Mr. Iqbal Dhaliwal from the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT discussed the importance of collaboration in tackling issues such as poverty and environmental sustainability. He highlighted an emissions trading scheme developed with the government of Gujarat, which resulted in a notable 20 to 30% reduction in emissions. This example underscores how strategic partnerships among governments, researchers, and philanthropists can lead to meaningful solutions.
