Opening new Markets in APJ The market opportunity in APJ is undeniable but the question is how to address it and finding answers to the main questions often ends up with it being considered too hard. I have succeeded and failed a number of times opening up new markets but the process has taught me some valuable lessons and certainly allowed me to focus on the main issues to resolve. 1. Companies in APJ want to see local references and quite a few don’t really want to be the first. This needs to be a focus, where to find and target companies to be your first success stories. 2. What countries to focus on? The region is big - 12 hours flying time from Seoul to Mumbai, 10.5 hours Seoul to Sydney. 3. What is going to be the approach to open up a new market; - Send somebody already with your company out to Asia. They will know the solution but likely not the market or culture. - Hire somebody locally, if so where? - Try to build sales remotely from your existing sales teams. - Appoint some resellers and hope for the best - this can work if there is services or other associated revenues to make it worthwhile. But taking a new (in the region) product to market takes investment. Will a reseller really do that 4. How are you going to provide support for end customers to ensure they are successful and hopefully become references? 5. Once you start getting traction what are the next steps in investment for success? I am interested in other perspectives on this challenge and then post some of the approaches that have worked (and maybe some that failed and why).
