#SMUYPHSL is pleased to announce that Assoc Prof. Aurelio Gurrea-Martínez has been named 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴-𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 by Global Restructuring Review. The prestigious award was presented at a ceremony in London on 21 November. Assoc Prof. Gurrea-Martinez received this award for three of his most recent and disruptive contributions to the international insolvency debate: 𝟭.⁠ ⁠𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗜 Together with Prof. Anthony Casey (University of Chicago Law School) and Prof. Robert Rasmussen (USC Gould School of Law), Assoc Prof. Gurrea-Martinez proposed to revisit the concept of COMI (Centre of Main Interests) under the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency. On 19 November 2024, we were honoured to have Professor Felix Steffek (Professor of Law and Director of the Centre for Corporate and Commercial Law at the University of Cambridge) delivering the Singapore Global Restructuring Initiative (SGRI) Professorship Lecture at the Singapore Management University SMU Yong Pung How School of Law.   In his lecture, Professor Felix Steffek who is currently visiting Singapore Management University as SGRI Visiting Professor, explored the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in managing financial distress. The lecture covered conceptual questions of AI applications in corporate insolvency as well as the datasets necessary for such services. It also discussed how AI is expected to impact the insolvency profession as well as the use and design of corporate insolvency law.   Professor Pey Woan Lee (Dean of the Singapore Management University) delivered the opening remarks. After Professor Steffek’s presentation, there was a panel discussion chaired by SMU Assoc Professor Aurelio Gurrea-Martínez (Head of the Singapore Global Restructuring Initiative).   Our sincere gratitude to Professor Steffek for kindly sharing his pioneering work with us. The SMU Singapore Global Restructuring Initiative (SGRI), in collaboration with SMU’s Overseas Centre in Bangkok and the SMU Centre for Commercial Law in Asia (CCLA), organised a successful conference titled, 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘓𝘢𝘸: 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴, held in Bangkok on 13 November.   The conference gathered prominent academics, judges and practitioners from several jurisdictions. Speakers included Prof. Edward Morrison (Charles Evans Gerber Professor of Law at Columbia Law School), #SMUYPHSL’s Assoc Prof Aurelio Gurrea-Martínez (Head, SMU SGRI) and Asst Prof Nydia Remolina, Judge Kanok Jullamon (Bankruptcy Division, Supreme Court of Thailand), Ms Yada Yuwataepakorn (Partner, Baker McKenzie Thailand), Mr Matt Crane (Partner, Deal Advisory, KPMG Thailand), Ms Paralee Techajongjintana (Partner, Baker McKenzie Thailand) and Mr Debanshu Mukherjee (Co-Founder, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy).    The event provided valuable insights into global insolvency practices and emerging trends in corporate restructuring and insolvency in Asia, the United States and beyond. It examined the collapse of crypto exchanges and the treatment of digital assets in insolvency as well as the features and challenges of insolvency law in Thailand. The event concluded with a panel discussion that explored different strategies to deal with financial distress. We are thrilled and proud to announce that Prof. Aurelio Gurrea-Martínez, Associate Professor of Law and Head of the Singapore Global Restructuring Initiative (SGRI) at Singapore Management University, has been named Cross-Border Insolvency Academic of the Year! He received this prestigious award from Global Restructuring Review during the GRR awards ceremony that took place in London on 21 November 2024. According to Global Restructuring Review, Prof. Gurrea-Martinez has received this award for three of his most recent and disruptive contributions to the international insolvency debate. Namely, the first one was his work advocating for the need to revisit the concept of #COMI under the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency, co-authored with Professor Anthony Casey (University of Chicago Law School) and Professor Robert Rasmussen (USC Gould School of Law). This project started with an open letter that Professors Gurrea-Martinez, Casey and Rasmussen sent to the Secretariat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group V (insolvency) available here: https://lnkd.in/dQD5KRyk. It then continued with the publication of two academic articles: one of them explaining the details of the proposal that they sent to UNCITRAL (available here: https://lnkd.in/dKiXj4Mq) and another one responding to critics (available here: https://lnkd.in/daYuHMye). The second project that made him win this award is the #Global #Insolvency #Index that Prof. Gurrea-Martinez has created (available here: https://lnkd.in/gZvC9du9). In this index, Prof. Gurrea-Martinez develops a new methodology for the assessment and understanding of insolvency systems around the world. He suggests a new set of variable for the assessment of reorganisation procedures from the perspective of debtors, secured creditors and general unsecured creditors. Then, by analysing the attractiveness of reorganisation procedures in more than 50 jurisdictions around the world, Prof. Gurrea-Martinez challenges the traditional classification of insolvency systems as debtor-friendly or creditor-friendly jurisdictions. The third contribution mentioned by Global Restructuring Review was Prof. Gurrea-Martinez’s recent book entitled “Reinventing Insolvency Law in Emerging Economies” published by Cambridge University Press. This #book explains how and why #insolvency #law in #emerging #economies needs to be reinvented. It also examines the importance of insolvency law for the promotion of economic growth as well as the similarities and divergences in the design of insolvency law around the world.
