We discovered a unique source of 'human-centric' inspiration for autonomous vehicle design by allowing elderly individuals to guide our exploration of Generative AI. In the second part of a five-part series, Caitlin Foo shares a delightful collaboration with her 90-year-old grandmother, Eunice Chang. Both the process and the results embody the creative vision we seek, capturing the 'right kind of wrong'. What happens when we put Generative AI into the hands of elderly individuals who have no design background? We explored this intriguing possibility with five senior citizens for Singapore Design Week. If you're in Singapore, come see this exhibition at the National Design Centre before it wraps up. At times, this endeavour felt nearly impossible, yet this unusual experiment has blossomed into one of my favourite projects. Today, I'm excited to share part one of five with you, which features the remarkable collaboration between Winnie Lim and her 82-year-old aunt, Mdm Yee Hoat Sang. If you haven’t used it this way, AI proves to be exceptionally effective for co-design; it not only stimulates recall but also encourages the sharing of insightful life stories better than many traditional participatory methods. What excites me most about Generative AI is how it allows us to tap into the imaginations and concerns of individuals who might otherwise remain silent or distant from the innovation process. Amidst so many different tools, we’re also increasingly discovering that Hypersketch excels in enabling everyday individuals to intuitively engage with AI for meaningful creative exploration—making it possible to collaborate with both the elderly and schoolchildren alike. Worked with my dearest aunt to bring her vision for the future of Autonomous Vehicle (AV) to life using Generative AI and… it is now exhibited at the National Design Centre! 🚗💨 As a senior without no formal design background, getting her to create an AV from scratch is definitely a stretch (rhyme intended). While AI can be used to generate visuals of what we already have in mind, AI can also be used in another way — to generate visuals for us to speculate what these visuals are telling us. That was exactly what we did. We went on to have her decide and express what and why she preferred certain design details, patched them, edited them, refined them and it went on and on… I am absolutely pleased to be seeing how my aunt became more receptive of tech and AI through this design process as she went from “莫啦莫啦/MAI LA MAI LA” to “真趣味/JIN CU BI” and “有影會使咧/WU YIA EH SAI LEI“!!!😁 Together, we’ve created THRILLS WITHOUT SPILLS, a concept that merges adventure and safety. By leveraging the self-driving capabilities of autonomous vehicles, this concept transforms her safety concerns into a creative response that merges the thrill of riding — the wind on the face — while ensuring security of the riders. Very thankful to be a part of PEOPLE OF DESIGN SHOWCASE SERIES – DESIGN, organised by Hans Tan, which explores the empowering nature of design by placing it directly in the hands of people from diverse walks of life.
