At SMAG (Singapore MMA and Acrylic Group), we collect and sell recyclables. The proceeds along with personal donations from employees, are then donated to a chosen charity by our Green Committee. This year marks our 8th annual donation. This round, we proudly supported The Salvation Army Gracehaven Children’s Home*, raising $10,988 through the efforts of our team and community. These funds will help Gracehaven provide care and support to vulnerable children, empowering them to build brighter futures. As part of our efforts, on January 15, 2025, we organized a festive activity at Gracehaven in celebration of Chinese New Year. Alongside 30 children and 18 SMAG volunteers, we baked approximately 240 pineapple tarts. The event was filled with joy as the children enthusiastically shaped and decorated their tarts, showcasing their creativity and individuality. Kudos to our incredible volunteers! Your dedication makes a world of difference! (*Gracehaven is a residential facility in Singapore dedicated to children and youth aged 7 to 19 who have faced abuse, neglect, or require rehabilitation.  It provides a safe and nurturing environment with therapeutic services delivered by social workers and mental health professionals to help these children heal and grow. The home supports around 90 children at a time and operates on public donations and partial government funding, offering free services to families in crisis)

Sumitomo Chemical has newly designated 10 of the Group’s products and technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions. Sumika Sustainable Solutions was established as an initiative aimed at contributing to building a sustainable society by designating services and products related to countering global warming, reducing environmental impact, and other sustainable contributions, which marks its ninth anniversary this year. The newly designated products include a termite control agent using plant-derived natural pyrethrin, super engineering plastics with outstanding heat resistance, and polypropylene manufactured using mechanical recycling technology (check the link below for more details). Sumitomo Chemical is proud to announce that we have received the prestigious 23rd Green Sustainable Chemistry (GSC) Awards, including the "Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award" and the "Minister of the Environment Award," from the Japan Association for Chemical Innovation (JACI). This marks the second time in history that an achievement has been honored with two ministers' awards simultaneously.   We were recognized for our development and dissemination of CFP-TOMO®, an easy-to-use tool for calculating the carbon footprint of chemical products, addressing the complexities of their manufacturing processes. By providing CFP-TOMO® free of charge, we aim to support the industry's efforts towards a carbon-neutral society. The tool has been widely adopted, with 111 companies using it as of May 2024, and positive feedback from users highlights its effectiveness.   This is our fourth GSC award. 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗦𝗜𝗔 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗠  𝗕𝗬 𝗦𝗖𝗘𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗦𝗜𝗔 Our group company, Sumitomo Chemical Enviro-Agro Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd (SCEA) participated in a tree-planting activity at the Sungai Menyala Forest Reserve*, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia on 23 September 2023. Armed with cangkul (hoe), seven staff, led by Mr. Sudin Suboh, Director/General Manager of PCA Dept, planted a total of 70 Aquilaria (Karas) trees in support of the Malaysian Greening Program: 100 million Tree Planting Campaign. It is an initiative by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change that aims to increase the awareness on the importance of forest areas in Malaysia and to secure commitment to maintain them. A special thank you to Mr. Nuazri, the Forest Reserve Officer of Negeri Sembilan, for arranging the tree planting program and for delivering the welcome speech, safety briefing and planting methods. SMAG Eco Day Are you lamenting about the relentless heat and scorching sun? This serves as a burning reminder that global warming looms ever closer to home.  There is however, cause for optimism: SMAG* companies’ steadfast commitment to sustainability continues to shine brightly. Which brings us to SMAG ECO Day, an event dedicated to promoting sustainability. Now in its eighth year, the 2024 edition was held on 22nd March 2024 with the theme, ‘Sustainability after COVID: Practice 4Rs’.   All employees and in-house contractors who attended the event received an ‘eco bag’ as a welcome gift. One of the day’s highlights was a talk by Ms. Vanessa Ong, the founder of Gernise Global Pte Ltd. Her presentation, "Giving Agriculture Waste a Second Life” inspired the audience with the idea of harmonious sustainability.  At the event’s conclusion, attendees were called-to-action to embrace eco-conscious practices in the wake of global challenges.
