The UN International Day of Forests was observed last week, a day dedicated to acknowledging the significance of our forests and exploring how we can leverage new and emerging technologies to combat deforestation. According to the UN, an estimated 420 million hectares of forest have been lost since 1990. Although the rate has slowed down, a concerning 10 million hectares continue to vanish each year. In a world precariously balanced on the brink of ecological shift, forests emerge as towering beacons of life, biodiversity, and essential climate stabilisation. It is crucial to address deforestation and degradation to align with the global goals of significantly reducing emissions by 2030. At Urbana Search, we are very proud of our commitment to sustainability and the launch last September of our “Growing Together" Initiative with our partner the Green Steps group. Through this initiative, we have committed to pledging a portion of each fee received from our clients to planting trees on their behalf. Since September 2023, we have already financed the planting 700 trees in a mangrove reforestation project in Sumatra and we are on track to hit 2500 by the end of 2024. With the support of Green Steps group advanced eco-tech platform, every client has individual access to their own digital impact map and can verify that every tree is planted, be able examine the CO2 offset and visualise the positive impact being made. First takeaways from MIPIM in Cannes. The size and the scale of the event are breathtaking, it feels like there are actually 20,000 people in attendance. Great turn out from nearly all the big consultancies and capital market groups. Perhaps unsurprisingly there is significant participation from Saudi Arabia providing lots of information on ongoing projects. But THE biggest turnout is from the gilet wearers even though the weather is a pleasant 17 degrees and sunny. It’s not a MIPIM myth.
