𝗠&𝗔 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗣𝗢 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 As we head into the final stretch of 2024, it's a timely moment to reflect on the evolving Southeast Asian #startup landscape. While #IPO markets remain subdued, M&A activity continues to surge, offering a compelling alternative for startups seeking growth and liquidity. Here are the key takeaways from our House View this quarter: ❄️𝗜𝗣𝗢𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹: VCs demand both growth potential and a solid financial foundation, making IPOs challenging for many startups. 🤝𝗠&𝗔 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: Mergers and acquisitions offer startups a way to secure resources, technology, and market access for accelerated growth. 🎯 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗹: Established tech companies are actively acquiring smaller startups to solidify their positions and expand into new sectors. 📏 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: Regardless of funding route, startups need to manage their finances strategically for long-term success. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱: The Federal Reserve's interest rate cut sparks optimism for a more vibrant funding environment in 2025. However, securing capital is just one piece of the puzzle. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲. Navigating the 𝗝-𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 phase of a startup is simultaneously exhilarating and challenging for founders. It's a time when maintaining steady nerves is crucial, as startups often experience initial setbacks before reaching significant growth. The good news is, during this phase, founders don't have to rely solely on equity financing. Instead, they can tap into venture debt, which can provide the necessary funds to finance part of their growth while 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Curious how other Founders have used venture debt to fuel growth? Check out our case studies here 👉 👉 https://lnkd.in/gz9Eu--x #VentureDebt #StartupGrowth Photo credit: Skyler Gerald on Unsplash

Every entrepreneur faces pivotal funding decisions that shape their venture's future. In this excellent article, David Spreng (veteran investor and Founder of US venture lender, Runway Growth Capital) illustrates how the fund-raising decisions of two similar (fictional) companies resulted in significantly different outcomes: ➡️➡️𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 opted for venture equity only, which resulted in an eventual sale for $𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, but left the Founder with only $𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. ➡️➡️𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 used 2 rounds of venture debt to complement venture equity. Eventual sale for $𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 and the Founder exited with $𝟰𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. This case study illustrates the critical difference in outcomes based on funding strategies. Venture debt, when used wisely, can provide the necessary capital with 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, preserving founders' vision and stake. Consider your funding options carefully — the path you choose can shape your entrepreneurial journey. Click here to read more: https://lnkd.in/epn46-iX

Genesis participated as a panelist at the recent Citi Commercial Bank's 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 in Bangkok! Our Partner, Martin Tang 邓文豪, joined a panel of experts, including Citi’s Jatin Mamtani (moderator), Khun Sam Tanskul, and Everett Leonidas to discuss the future of financing in today's challenging landscape. Martin emphasized the crucial role of sustainable #uniteconomics in securing successful fundraising rounds. He also stressed the importance of raising capital when you can, not when you have to, thereby granting companies greater negotiating power. 🌟🌟A huge thanks to the Citi team (Gunjan Kathuria Kalra, Shervone Saw, Mayank Kochhar, and others) for organizing another fantastic event and for their warm hospitality. We're excited to continue our collaboration and drive innovation in tech financing. 🌟🌟 #venturedebt
