By 2030, Southeast Asia is set to become the world's fourth-largest economy, with food consumption expected to grow 40% by 2050 🍽. But the region’s agri-food system remains fragile; fragmented smallholder farms, outdated farming practices, environmental degradation and volatility from climate change are all urgent challenges to address.   To explore pathways forward, #WavemakerImpact partnered with the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) – a non-profit established by Temasek Trust – with support from Philanthropy Asia Alliance, to publish “Seeding the Future: Transforming Smallholder Farms for a Sustainable Tomorrow” 📖. [#WatchthisSpace 🚀 ] How might we help apparel brands decarbonise supply chains while driving profitability? 🌍 This was the HMW (How Might We) question that #WMi Founder-in-Residence Malini Kannan and her Venture team explored during a recent trip to India! 🇮🇳 The textile industry is responsible for 6-10% of global emissions, over 60% of which are from the apparel sector, largely due to fast fashion cycles becoming shorter. Can apparel companies cut supply chain emissions while maintaining or even increasing profits? 💸 To find answers, the team travelled to #Coimbatore and #Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, engaging with over 15 different local stakeholders, including yarn spinners, garment manufacturers, buyers, dye houses, brands, and consultants. 👗🧵 Their goal was to understand the production process and pinpoint the factors contributing to high emissions. They dived deep into the complex upstream ecosystem to trace the entire garment lifecycle—from raw materials to distribution of finished products. 🏭 🔍 The team discovered key operational challenges in the apparel industry, including scaling green energy adoption to reduce costs, and working capital pressures from rising raw material costs. 📈 But they also uncovered innovative solutions—some traditional, some emerging—and opportunities to leverage these innovations to support brands in decarbonising their supply chains. 🌱 💡 It was an eye-opening trip, filled with insights and potential collaborations! 🤝 ✨ The team returned energised by the knowledge gained and the connections made.
