“As a child, I was a handful – always up to mischief and never focused in class. But my primary school teacher, Ms Foong, never labelled me as a problem child or gave up on me. Most importantly, she believed in me. That belief, especially when you're young, becomes part of your own belief system. I wanted to be just like her, to leave a positive impact on someone's life. However, life doesn't always go as planned. I began my career as a technical engineer, maintaining computer systems in e-learning environments. Then I tried sales – a completely different world, fast-paced and competitive. But still, something was missing. We spend so much of our lives at work – eight hours a day or sometimes more. It's not just about the pay, but how you spend your time and what you dedicate your energy to. A lack of fulfilment is like an invisible burden, constantly weighing you down. I realised I didn't have to be a teacher to make a difference. My goal was always about helping people reach their full potential. Now, as a career coach, I do more than just helping with resume writing and brushing up interview skills. It's about understanding my clients' values, passions and fears, helping them find their purpose in life. Because when you find work that aligns with who you are, it's not just a job. It's a source of pride and fulfilment. It's crucial to develop and plan your career, even when you’re securely employed. Personal interests and values may change over time. Proactive planning can lead to more fulfilling opportunities, help maintain one’s marketability and enhance job security. There's nothing quite like the shared joy when a client lands their dream job. That moment of triumph – it's what makes my career so rewarding!” Drawing from his personal journey, Simon Sim now helps his clients navigate today's job market. Tune in to hear his advice! “𝗔 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲. 𝗔 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.” – 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗻 This powerful quote encapsulates LEE Yu Haur's experience in the Polaris programme. A seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in Governance and Compliance, Yu Haur was at a crossroads when he decided to turn to Polaris for guidance. “I had been with the same organisation for 15 years, and it was time to think about what my next move could be,” Yu Haur explains. He stumbled upon the Polaris programme in November 2023 while browsing job opportunities on MyCareersFuture, and was immediately drawn to its promise of career coaching and guidance. The process was quick and seamless – within days, he found himself enrolled in a coaching session, just three weeks after submitting the online form. The guidance he received from his Polaris career coach Jacqueline Tok was transformative. “Jacqueline took me through a ‘self-rediscovery’ journey,” Yu Haur says. By identifying his strengths, weaknesses, and values, they were able to uncover a clearer path forward. For Yu Haur, the process reaffirmed his commitment to his field – Governance and Compliance – while also helping him realise the broader potential of his expertise in Risk Management. What sets the Polaris programme apart is its focus on self-reflection and personal growth. “Jacqueline didn’t just help me with career decisions. She helped me understand myself better, even beyond my professional life,” he shares. Her coaching provided him with the confidence to apply his deep knowledge in Governance and Compliance to new and impactful areas, such as Risk Management, allowing him to contribute more effectively to his organisation’s goals. For those considering a career transition later in life, Yu Haur offers a poignant piece of advice: "Be like water," quoting the late Bruce Lee. “We must be adaptable,” he stresses. Changing careers at any stage can be daunting, but with the right support, such as from the Polaris programme, it becomes not just possible but exciting. The key takeaway? Change doesn’t have to be a disruption; it can be a catalyst for personal and professional growth. As we navigate our own careers, let’s ask ourselves: Are we ready to embrace change and make the most of the opportunities that come our way? Yu Haur’s story proves that with the right coaching and mindset, you can rediscover your professional path, unlock new opportunities and truly thrive. #JourneysOfResilientSingaporeans #CareerHealth #Polaris #GrowthMindset #CareerGuidance Dilys Boey Boon Ping Lau Lynn Ng Janice Foo Kenneth Meng Hwee Tang Lionel Chan Shahron Shahar
