Empowering Cocoa Farmers for a Sustainable Future
World Vision’s ANCP Climate Smart and Inclusive Cocoa Project in Usino District, Madang Province, has equipped 90 leader farmers with essential tools, including shirts, hand gloves, gumboots, raincoats, and sleeping bags, to enhance their support for registered farmer backyard nurseries and cocoa block setups.
Since 2021, these farmers have been trained to spread climate-smart practices and integrated pest and disease management to over 2,600 smallholder cocoa farmers across 21 wards over the next 18 months. Each farmer will plant 300 clonal trees to kickstart their cocoa agribusiness ventures.
Local leaders such as Ward 14 Councilor Jethro Banamaken and Ward 13 Councilor Peter Mamuri have voiced their support for the project, alongside Chairman Henry Daniel, a visionary leader, who sees cocoa as “gold for the future,” bringing prosperity to all farmers.
Roy Mukia, a registered farmer, expressed his excitement about helping village farmers earn income from cocoa, contributing to the cooperative's success. "This gear will help me to reach more farmers, share knowledge, and manage our cocoa blocks and land responsibly for the environment and the community."
This initiative is part of the Australian NGO-Cooperation Program (ANCP), supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, to strengthen the resilience of rural households and build an inclusive cocoa value chain.
The project concludes in June 2026.
