This May, Janellia participated in her first Youth Expedition Project (YEP) with Youth Corps Singapore, joining Project WeeTrip in Laos, a collaborative initiative organised by Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI). After volunteering virtually with Laotian communities during COVID-19, this opportunity was one she couldn’t pass up. Inspired by Janellia's journey? Youth Corps Singapore hosted A Walk in Nature 🌿 at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, a programme co-curated with the National Parks Board (NParks) as part of the KidsFun School Holiday Series. This initiative gave youth volunteers the chance to bond with children from diverse family backgrounds while learning about biodiversity and conservation. With children from 7Oaks Student Care Centre and Big Hearts Student Care Centre, the programme included activities such as icebreakers, craft sessions and a guided nature walk 🐾. It began with games like Blow Wind Blow to help everyone feel at ease. The children then made their own DIY binoculars before heading out on a nature trail, where they eagerly completed activity booklets 📖 and explored together. During the trail, the students asked questions about the wetland reserve and the wildlife that lived there. The highlight was reaching Eagle Point, where they saw Johor Bahru and observed rare bird species, such as eagles 🦅. Watching them enjoy the serene environment and letting their curiosity run free was truly heartwarming, reminding us how much fun and joy mean to them as kids. A big thank you to the volunteers who made A Walk in Nature possible! 🌟 #YouthCorpsSingapore #AWIN #CommunityService #volunteersg

The final youth to represent Youth Corps Singapore at the 27th International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) World Volunteer Conference was Raasheeda, a Cohort 14 Leader. As a volunteer committed to social change, she was eager to connect with like-minded individuals. A key highlight for Raasheeda was the opportunity to network with a diverse group of volunteer leaders from around the world. She found the atmosphere to be open and inclusive, encouraging participants to share their personal experiences and igniting many insightful conversations. At the conference, Raasheeda attended a workshop on “Measuring Impact”, which focused on evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives. Participants explored metrics and tools for measuring success, with facilitators showcasing quantifiable outcomes in environmental conservation and social services. The session emphasised the need to balance passion with data-driven evaluation to ensure sustainability and improvement. As an active member of YOLDEN, one of the longest running Youth Corps programme that engages seniors in nursing homes, Raasheeda is motivated to introduce similar metrics in her own projects, tracking engagement and impact. Another notable workshop focused on digital tools for volunteer coordination, streamlining recruitment, scheduling, and communication. Raasheeda plans to advocate for adopting these tools, recognising their potential to enhance volunteer engagement, reduce burnout, and free up time for high-impact activities. She is also keen to implement strategies from other workshops, particularly in mobilising resources, forming community partnerships, and leveraging technology to streamline volunteer operations. Inspired by the conference, Raasheeda is eager to explore global collaborations, particularly in eldercare, and hopes to initiate joint projects with international peers to address shared challenges. “The global perspectives, meaningful connections, hands-on workshops, and inspiring stories have all contributed to a renewed sense of purpose in my volunteering journey,” Raasheeda reflects. #YouthCorpsSG #volunteersg #NYCsg

The December school holidays are here! 🥳 Youth Corps Singapore kicked off the holidays with the first session of A Walk to Remember on 27 December 2024, supported by around 50 dedicated volunteers taking on roles as Volunteer Coordinators (VCs) and Volunteer Befrienders (VBs). This programme, co-curated with the National Heritage Board, aims to educate children about Singapore’s rich history and heritage. Through hands-on activities and guided interactions, the volunteers accompanied the children on curated trails, exploring the nation’s cultural roots through Singapore's past, present and future. 🇸🇬 The day began with a comprehensive briefing for the volunteers, setting the tone for an enriching experience. VBs facilitated interactive icebreakers before diving into an exciting line-up of activities. Highlights included visits to the Children’s Museum Singapore, where the children explored the Olden Singapore exhibit to learn about life 100 years ago and engaged with the HawkerVerse exhibition, comparing hawker centres of the past and present. At the Civil Defence Museum, they discovered historical firefighting equipment and learned about the impactful story of the Bukit Ho Swee fire. The children’s enthusiasm was infectious as they worked closely with VBs to answer questions in their activity booklets, share observations, and explore each exhibit. Guided by the volunteers, they noted down details, asked thoughtful questions, and demonstrated a deep engagement with the day’s activities. 💕 We are grateful to the National Heritage Board for partnering with us to create such a meaningful and memorable experience. Together, we continue to inspire the next generation to connect with Singapore’s heritage. ✨ #YouthCorpsSingapore #CommunityService #Volunteer #AWalkToRemember

Niki Lee, a member of the Eldercare Cluster, has been a dedicated volunteer since 2018. He recently represented his cluster in Youth Action Challenge Season 5, where he aimed to equip youths as effective ambassadors to engage seniors in becoming digitally ready for a more inclusive and cohesive society. He also represented Youth Corps Singapore at the 27th International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) World Volunteer Conference, held from 22 to 25 October 2024. Attending the conference provided Niki with valuable insights into how volunteerism can drive community resilience and inclusion, with several key themes that resonate strongly with his focus on senior empowerment. One key theme was the importance of intergenerational engagement in fostering stronger communities. Many sessions highlighted how seniors bring invaluable knowledge and experience that, when shared across generations, enhance social cohesion and mutual respect. This aligns closely with Niki’s goal of empowering seniors as active contributors and mentors. He believes this can be explored through intergenerational programmes that pair seniors with youth, promoting skills exchange and mutual understanding. Discussions on the role of volunteerism in improving well-being also reinforced the importance of social connection for mental health, especially for seniors. By supporting programmes that encourage meaningful connections, youths can help address issues of isolation and enhance the sense of purpose among seniors. Niki plans to integrate these insights into his volunteering efforts at Youth Corps, strengthening his focus on mental well-being in senior engagement activities. “This conference has equipped me with actionable strategies to deepen our impact, foster intergenerational connections, and build resilient communities where seniors are empowered to thrive,” Niki remarked. #YouthCorpsSG #volunteersg #NYCsg
