  • School of X exists to help you create the impacts you want to see in the world around you. It’s wonderful to see how the community members who came together in 2021 for a School of X bootcamp are still growing and going strong today, driving the change they dreamed about. We are all people of design.

Can design thinking foster closer social bonds among neighbours? Yes, it can! In the case of a group of Queenstown residents, a collective aspiration for a more loveable neighourhood – via stronger community bonds – was enough to transform an empty patch of grass into the hottest place to be! The Queenstown Kakis gather monthly for a range of activities that community members themselves suggest and deliver. This leads to deeper understanding between people, the growth of connections, and thus, the capacity to co-create more opportunities for each other. Relationship building through mutual understanding can bring people to previously unimagined new outcomes. It’s much like the process of design thinking – the spark that led to the Queenstown Kakis initiative via a design thinking bootcamp led by the School of X. In Queenstown, it’s created a ground-up network of support and exchange. Read more about how design thinking fostered community bonds by heading to https://bit.ly/pod-qtk. – Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, People of Design celebrates the everyday visionaries who are delivering extraordinary impact through design. These innovators defy the stereotype that design is only for designers or that it is merely about aesthetics – it is a tool for positive change that is accessible to everyone. #DesignSingaporeCouncil #PeopleOfDesign

  • When we co-design for future care environments with patients, next of kin, and care providers, we create solutions that resonate with and work for all of us. Our display at the National Design Centre, showcasing grounds-up co-design to activate communities that care, as part of Challenge X:the National Design Challenge, will be open until 10th November 2024. Do drop by and share your thoughts - we’d love to know which solutions resonate with you!

Design exists to serve real-world needs. I found myself getting excited over this design case study I saw during Singapore Design Week that reimagined pre-surgery environments. Anyone who’s experienced that nerve-inducing pre-surgery wait, or accompanied a loved one for it, knows how intimidating the process is. Clinical settings aren’t known for being the most comforting (is that why so many of them feature in horror movies?) Form follows function. What I liked about this design prototype was that the function of the space had changed: empathise with the customer and reduce their anxiety. The team’s prototyped a cozy space that provides comfort and privacy. Less horror movie, more luxury sanctuary. I’d love to see this out in hospitals. Design helps us see that better ways forward are possible. Big cheers to School of X for empowering participants to design problems they encounter, and these participants at SingHealth for their solutioning. Thanks DesignSingapore Council for sharing this.

  • Where do stories lead you…? The beauty of stories lies in the journey they take us on: the process of discovery; meeting new characters; the emergent ending. Spot the similarities with design thinking! There is much we can learn from the experience of storytelling, if we wish to sharpen our skills in design thinking, and develop more empathetic solutions to our complex challenges. This was the motivation behind our storytelling programmes: helping you embed storytelling into your design processes for stronger outcomes. Returning for its final run of the year, don’t miss the School of X “Storytelling for User Research” Masterclass, taking place this November! Join us to experience and learn about techniques that enhance the power of storytelling in user research, designed to help you create the conditions to unearth meaningful, insightful stories. Feedback from previous participants commended “the hands-on and almost therapy-like running of the workshop, to form stories and learn collectively.” They “liked that the experiential learning for interviews was relatively safe, such that it didn't feel embarrassing to not do well, and in fact gave space to see and reflect on our reflexive behaviours and styles of questioning.” They reflected that “the design of the training was thoughtful and built upon a consistent frame. Reinforcing without repeating. Very elegant.” Are you keen to experience it for yourself? Register to be part of the 2-day masterclass to integrate the craft of storytelling into your design research. During this immersive and reflective School of X Masterclass, you will learn how to: 🟡 Gain hands-on practice in integrating storytelling with field-based user research. 🟡 Connect with those you seek to understand, through storytelling. 🟡 Feel the emotional journey an authentic story can take you on. 🟡 Tap into the powerful stories of others to build empathy for their own journeys. 🟡 Use stories to make sense of situations and unlock new insights.
