Originating over 400 years ago in Suzhou, pingtan is a captivating blend of storytelling and music, performed in the melodious Suzhou dialect. For one night only, the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe will enchant the audience with tales of "The Four Beauties" from ancient China - Xi Shi, Diao Chan, Wang Zhaojun, and Yang Guifei. Beyond celebrating their extraordinary beauty, this performance delves into the touching sacrifices these four women made for their country and its people.

The simplicity of the stage, with just two chairs, a small table, a woodblock for rhythm, a folding fan, and a stringed musical instrument, allows the performers to weave intricate tales of battle, romance, and sacrifice.
