Chinese New Year Paintings—First National Woodblock New Year Paintings Joint Exhibition

A national woodblock New Year paintings joint exhibition is being held at the Beijing Chongdetang Museum. Chinese folk woodblock New Year paintings originated from ancient woodblock printing and were born out of folk beliefs and customs. They first took shape in the Song dynasty, flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and reached their peak in the mid-to-late Qing dynasty. There were more than 100 New Year painting production sites across the country, forming a huge New Year painting industry and market, with annual sales reaching several million pieces, becoming a commodity, decoration, and artwork that was part of the daily life of thousands of households. To rescue, protect, inherit, and spread folk New Year paintings, promote excellent national culture, and enrich the cultural life of the people, the Chongdetang Museum is holding this "National Woodblock New Year Paintings Joint Exhibition". This exhibition focuses on traditional New Year paintings from 10 major New Year painting production sites across the country. There are Kaifeng and Zhuxianzhen woodblock New Year paintings, which originated in the Northern Song dynasty and are famous for their diverse door god New Year paintings; delicate and beautiful, half-printed and half-painted Yangliuqing New Year paintings; woodblock printed Yangjiabu and Wuqiang New Year paintings, which formed a huge New Year painting market in the late Qing dynasty; Sichuan Mianzhu New Year paintings, which widely incorporate characters from novels, romances, and operas into New Year paintings; rough and bold, simple and honest Shaanxi Fengxiang New Year paintings; Foshan woodblock New Year paintings, which have simple lines, full compositions, and are highly decorative; Gaomi Puhui New Year paintings, which have unique production techniques; and Beijing woodblock New Year paintings, which have been rescued and restored in recent years and successfully applied for World Heritage status. The themes and content include door gods, drama stories, beauties and children, landscapes and flowers, and more. The new New Year paintings section brings together new New Year paintings from different historical periods since the founding of the People's Republic of China, with rich and colorful themes and content, reflecting new life and new trends from different angles. In terms of creative techniques, diversity and creativity are attempted. This New Year paintings joint exhibition features more than 130 New Year paintings, showcasing New Year paintings from different regions and styles, and will lead the audience to experience the profound and colorful Chinese folk art.
