The palace was first built during the reign of King Ahmar and his successors in the 13th century, consisting of numerous courtyards. The name Alhambra comes from the Arabic meaning of a red fortress, and from a distance we can see the red brick walls inside the palace and the stained red Saint Nicholas observation deck. We may wonder why it's not named in Spanish, but in Arabic. That's because this is the capital of Nepal, which was ruled by the Nasrid dynasty at the time. The first ruler of the dynasty, Mohammed I ibn Nasr, built the Alhambra Palace, and Muhammad was known as the "son of the Red". The reason why this palace is called the "Red Fortress" is that it was built by the Nasrid dynasty.
