A Lesson in Space: Points, Lines, and Planes

Visiting the Children's Art Education Center at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum for the 'A Lesson in Space: Points, Lines, and Planes' exhibition, I was once again captivated by the charm of space! The exhibition starts with the basic elements of art—points, lines, and planes—combined with volume and structure, leading the audience to explore the mysteries behind spatial composition. Through interactive installations, we get hands-on experience to feel how these elements affect emotions, visual effects, and perception. Inspired by Kandinsky's 'Composition VIII,' the exhibition delves into the expression and meaning of points, lines, and planes in art and architecture. The works include creations by artists from Taiwan and Japan such as Tada Minami, Lee Yuan-chia, Lin Shou-Yu, Chen Hsiao-Peng, Kang Ya-Chu, and Hsieh Jung-Wei, ranging from paintings and sculptures to spatial installations. The diverse forms are highly inspiring. Additionally, the exhibition introduces modernist architecture such as the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Agricultural Exhibition Hall of National Taiwan University, and the Luce Memorial Chapel of Tunghai University, linking the structural thinking of art and architecture to provide a new perspective. The most special part is the interactive experience in the exhibition hall, where both children and adults can participate. The three-dimensional geometric design of the exhibition space makes one feel as if they are traversing between art and architecture, awakening a keen sense of space through play. Many parents bring their children to visit during weekends; the spacious area and interesting installations make it perfect for family fun. This exhibition not only enhances understanding of the relationship between space and structure but also allows one to personally experience how points, lines, and planes construct the world we live in!
