The Magical Blue Flames of Mount Ijen
#indonesiatrip
If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, hiking up Mount Ijen to witness the rare blue flames is a must-do on your #IndonesiaTrip. Located in East Java, this active volcano offers a mesmerizing phenomenon caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases. Start your trek at night to reach the summit before dawn and witness the otherworldly glow of the blue flames. Afterward, you can catch a stunning sunrise over the turquoise acidic crater lake. The hike is challenging, but the view and the experience are absolutely worth it. Be sure to bring a mask to protect yourself from sulfur fumes. #100WaysofTravel #MountIjen #BlueFlames #Java
📍Java Island, Indonesia. List of must-climb active volcanoes/Blue Flame Uizhen Volcano
Yizhen (Yizhen) Crater Lake is like a lake-green canvas
The color of sulfur is rendered on the canvas as the wind blows
Standing at the crater and watching the thick fog rising slowly, it seemed like time had stood still.
💞Recommended reasons:
This is my first time to go to Uijin Volcano
We took the train from Malang to Banyuwangi town the day before yesterday.
Because the next route is all the way east to Bali.
So we have separate itineraries for Mount Bromo and Mount Yizhen.
There are many Uijin volcanoes as soon as you come out of Banyuwangi Station #Daytour
It takes seven hours by train from Malang to Banyuwangi
In addition to resting in the car, I also search for various information
It is recommended that you go online to find information about various travel agencies.
My own part is to also ask local friends and hotel staff
-
In fact, Yizhen Volcano has a very special natural landscape - blue flames
But this can only be seen before dawn
Due to the recent active volcanic eruption, the entire park is closed to visitors at night.
The gate is not open to tourists until four o'clock in the morning.
In order to catch the blue flames before sunrise
The journey is very fast, originally expected to take 1.5-2 hours
We arrived at the crater in about an hour
It’s a pity that it’s still too late🫣
But the crater is still very spectacular, and the Tiffany Green Crater Lake is amazing.
Uizhen Crater Lake has the most acidic liquid in the world with a pH value of 0.5
The temperature is about 200-300 degrees Celsius, very high
However, Yizhen Volcano also abides by the laws of nature. The more beautiful it is, the more dangerous it is.
We had to wear gas masks to pass through the thick sulfur gas area
There are still many local miners working here
Every morning, I carry tools from the bottom of the mountain and go up the mountain to mine.
Then carry the thick pieces of sulfur down the mountain
I have sincere respect for these miners.
Life is really not easy
There are also many locals pushing carts along the way
Tourists who don’t have the energy to go up or down the mountain and are big enough can take the ride for a fee.
The fee range is quite wide, from 50,000 to 150,000. It is recommended that you ask more.

Ijen Mountain
#naturalwonders #100WaysOfTravel
The hike to reach the top and then down to the crater is not for everyone, it’s really steep and the way down to the crater can be dangerous.
Unfortunately they let anyone do the hike, more than half of the people in the hike were not fit enough to attempt the hike making descending in the crater dangerous for themselves and other. Regulations might be needed.
A part from that Ijen was a beautiful, an incredible experience!

Taman Gandrung Terakota Wonderful Indonesia
This park, which contains hundreds of statues of passionate dancers, is special because it was built on terraced rice fields at the foot of Mount Ijen, to be precise, the Jiwa Jawa Ijen Resort area, Licin District, Banyuwangi. This is a site to care for and treat Gandrung Dance as one of Banyuwangi's cultural identities. The Terracotta Loving Garden is inspired by the Terracotta Warriors and Horses in China which was built during the Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BC).Gandrung Terracotta Park not only presents rows of statues of gandrung dancers. Entering this area, visitors are shown green hills and expanses of rice fields, farmers plowing the fields, coffee plantation#themepark , durian trees, various types of bamboo, and local endemic plants. In the middle of the expanse is found an open amphitheater for scheduled art performances and jazz music events.#

Do Ijen and Bromo crater worth to visit?
During my trip to Ijen and Bromo Crater, I had the pleasure of meeting new friends from Germany, Salvador, and Singapore. Together, we embarked on an unforgettable adventure. We tried some delicious local food, including *nasi goreng* (fried rice), *sate ayam* (chicken satay), and *bakso* (meatball soup), which gave us a taste of Indonesia's vibrant culinary scene. The experience was made even more exciting by the stunning views, though we weren't fully prepared for the cold temperatures at the crater.
It was a bit rainy, and we realized we should have worn warmer clothes. Local shops along the way offer warm clothing for rent, but I'd recommend getting lighter coats because, as you start hiking, you'll warm up quickly. The weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key.
The view from the top of Ijen was absolutely breathtaking, with the blue fire and the sulfur mining process adding to the dramatic landscape. It’s definitely one of those moments you’ll never forget.
For those considering this trip, it’s worth noting that traveling from Bali is more convenient and quicker than from Surabaya. We spent about 7 hours driving to our location, so it’s something to plan for if you want to maximize your time at the craters.
All in all, it was an incredible experience with new friendships, beautiful landscapes, and a few lessons learned along the way. Highly recommended!

Indonesia | Ijen Volcano.
| Ijen Volcano. ❗️Absolutely worth it❗️
The blue flames are the most unique feature of Ijen Volcano, but the green sulfuric acid lake, rolling sulfur mist, and workers transporting sulfur are also part of the unique landscape of Ijen. If Bromo Volcano is desolate and spectacular, then Ijen is more like a post-apocalyptic world.
I think Ijen is the most photogenic place on this trip.
The reason I didn't see the blue flames is kind of funny. We arrived at the entrance of Ijen at 1:30 am. After getting our goggles and gas masks, we waited for a long time for no reason. Where did the guides go? To buy tickets? No one knew. Later, we heard that there were too many tickets to be issued, so many guides were waiting in line at the ticket office.
At 3:45 am, we finally started climbing. The path up the mountain was a steep dirt slope in the dark. After turning a corner, we saw other tourists' headlamps flashing higher up. The air was very humid and windless, making us sweat and fogging up our glasses.
After walking for about an hour, I reached the open area on the ridge at 4:45 am. The sky was already bright, so there was no chance of seeing the blue flames, but I still followed the crowd to the sulfuric acid lake, which was glowing green in the dim morning light.
🗻The path down the crater was very steep, and after a short section of guardrail, it was just a wild path. We could see many people gathering where the sulfur smoke was rising. Some people who arrived early saw the blue flames. I was curious about how they got there so fast.
Here are some tips for exploring Ijen Volcano, based on my personal experience:
If possible, bring a good gas mask and goggles. The protective gear provided by the park is better than nothing, but when taking photos in the sulfur smoke, you will inevitably be enveloped in thick smoke. Even if you hold your breath, the smoke will seep in through all the gaps, causing a strong sense of suffocation.
Take photos with the sulfur smoke as the background, but don't go too far into the smoke. The heat is scorching, and the ground may not be solid. Some people have fallen in before. Also, pay attention to the wind direction. When enveloped in sulfur smoke, you will feel suffocated and disoriented (you can't see anything and your brain shuts down), so retreat in time.
Wear a pair of well-fitting hiking shoes. Don't wear slippers, sneakers, or thick-soled shoes to Ijen. You will need to walk a lot of steep dirt and rocky paths to reach the sulfuric acid lake and the top of the mountain. A pair of outdoor shoes will protect you better.
Wear a headlamp to free your hands and take better photos.
Ijen is still a wild attraction, and many photogenic spots don't have guardrails. Be careful when taking photos and stay safe. A safe return home is the best footnote to a perfect trip.
Ijen volcano accidentally fell into the paradise on earth.
Ijen volcano🌋 purgatory on earth
It is also a breathtakingly beautiful existence
It exists miraculously on the high mountains
The distance up and down the mountain is 4 to 5 km.
The slope of the volcano is relatively steep and it took 1.5 hours to go up the mountain.
I went down the mountain and spent 200k to experience "Lamborghini"🚗
I heard about rickshaw pullers and sulfur carriers.
The average life expectancy is only 40 years old, which is really sad.
There is no blue fire now🔥The recommended departure time is 5 or 6 in the morning
There is really no need to set off early in the morning. There are very few people when we go to the top of the mountain in the morning.
You can take photos as you like without queuing up hahaha
The only regret is that I didn’t go to the lake😭
This is a place you come to once in a lifetime. Leave your regrets here.

Chasing the Sunrise at Mount Ijen
An unforgettable experience catching the sunrise at the top of Mount Ijen! The early morning trek was worth every step as the sky slowly lit up, revealing the stunning landscape around the iconic sulfur crater. The colors of the sunrise painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, casting a golden glow over the surroundings. Witnessing this natural wonder at dawn was an awe-inspiring moment that will stay with me forever—a perfect start to the day in East Java's untamed beauty.

I encountered the beautiful yet deadly "hell on earth" in Indonesia!
I finally realized my unforgettable volcano trekking in Indonesia! The brave ones eat volcanic ash first. The world's strongest natural sulfuric acid lake, I accept this poisonous beauty!
Kawah Ijen is an active volcano with an altitude of about 2,769 meters. It is famous for its volcanic crater lake and the blue flame, also known as "blue fire". There are only two places in the world where you can see the blue flame, one is Iceland, and the other is Kawah Ijen in Indonesia. The light blue volcanic lake is the largest strong acid volcanic lake in the world.
The beauty of Ijen is real, and the danger is real. There are basically no guardrails and it depends on hands and feet. And it starts in the dark, steep gravel road, everyone must be careful when going.
⚠Precautions
√How to get to Kawah Ijen?
You can stay in Banyuwangi, which is a small county. It is recommended to stay in a hotel here, and then charter a car to join a group to the scenic spot. You can ask about chartering a car at the hotel front desk.
√What time to go to Kawah Ijen?
Because Kawah Ijen is not open during the day, the trekking journey usually starts at 2 am and queues up to buy tickets at the entrance of the scenic spot. You need to get up at 12 am to take a car to the scenic spot (about 1 hour, and now you need to go to the hospital to get a health certificate before you can go up the mountain).
√How long does it take to walk to the top of Kawah Ijen?
The overall road conditions for trekking are gravel and mud roads, which are very slippery! You can walk to the top of the mountain in 1.5 hours without rest. If you really can't walk, there are local rickshaws. The locals call it "Lambo", which means rickshaw. We call it Lamborghini! Because the cost is quite expensive, a single trip costs 500 RMB, you can bargain!
√What do you need to bring to Kawah Ijen?
You must bring a gas mask~ The sulfur on the top of the mountain is very pungent, you can buy a gas mask in advance~ You also need to wear a jacket, it is quite cold at midnight.
The enchanting and dangerous "Gate of Hell".
Ijen Volcano 🌋 has the world's most acidic lake. After a 2-hour drive, a 4-hour hike in the rain and mud, and another hour on a rocky path, we were almost the last to leave 😇. Suddenly, a gust of wind tore open a hole for a minute, and a foreign photographer appeared in the clouds. He took pictures of the scenery 🌠 and I took pictures of him. It was like a scene from the end of the movie 25th Hour. I'm still excited about it, like I've found a treasure 🤩.
🎫 Tickets: 100k/person
It takes 2 hours to hike to the top of the volcano 👨🏻🦯
Or you can take a local rickshaw 💺 (round trip price is 700-1000k/person)
♻️ The bottom of the volcano is a sulfuric acid lake with a pH value of almost 0️⃣
At the top of the mountain, you can see thick white smoke 💨 constantly rising from below
♻️ The air is filled with pungent sulfur smoke
Next to it, you can vaguely see sulfur miners working by the sulfuric acid lake without any protective measures
♻️ Their daily task is to mine sulfur from the lake along the stone 🗿 path and carry it away
⚠️ Small tips:
✅ The guide will provide a gas mask, but it is not disposable ⚠️ If you mind, you can buy one in advance and bring it with you
✅ Don't worry about getting lost while hiking 😇 There are many tourists visiting along the way, just follow the crowd to the top of the mountain
✅ You can also bring a headlamp 💡 so you don't have to worry about not being able to see the road
✅ We usually exercise, so we feel okay walking all the way. But going down the mountain is a bit hard on the knees [!][!] To protect your knees, you can also take a rickshaw down
✅ Although it can get hot while hiking, the wind at the top of the mountain 🌋 is a bit cool in the early morning. After sweating from exercise, a jacket is necessary
blackwood_vivienne_evelyn Walk to Mount Ijen
Wonderful walk to catch the sunrise at the top of Mount Ijen, Java island, Indonesia. I recommend this visit to everyone passionate about breathtaking landscapes. The hike is doable for people who are not well trained. Get some nice hiking shoes as the path is quite slippery because of the dust.

Surabaya, Indonesia: A Symphony of Prosperity and History
Indonesia, a Southeast Asian country composed of thousands of islands, attracts the world's attention with its rich natural resources, diverse culture, and unique geographical location. Among the many cities in Indonesia, Surabaya is undoubtedly a shining pearl, known for its prosperous business atmosphere, long history, and unique geographical location.
Surabaya, known as Surabaya in Indonesian, is located in the eastern part of Java Island. It is the capital of East Java Province and the second largest city in Indonesia. The city covers an area of about 330 square kilometers and has a population of more than 2.87 million (as of 2020), making it one of the four major central cities in Indonesia. Surabaya is located on the southwest side of the Strait of Surabaya, facing Madu Island across the strait. It has been an important foreign trade port on Java Island since ancient times, connecting the economic lifeline of Indonesia and the world.
Surabaya is a commercial city and port city mainly engaged in trade, and its economic development level ranks among the top in Indonesia. Most of the population here is engaged in services, industry and trade, forming a diversified economic system. The main industries in Surabaya include shipbuilding, heavy equipment, food processing, agriculture, electronics, home decoration, and handicrafts. The main products are cigarettes, textiles, sugar, coffee, steel, shoes, etc. In addition, Surabaya has complete financial infrastructure, with many modern financial institutions such as banks, insurance and import and export companies, and is one of the important financial hubs in the Indonesian archipelago.
Surabaya is not only a prosperous modern city, but also an ancient city with a long history. As early as the Middle Ages, Surabaya had become a foreign trade port in Java, witnessing the coming and going of countless merchant ships and cultural exchanges. The place name of Surabaya is also full of legendary colors. One argument is that its original meaning is "shark crocodile", named after the local desolate swamp; another argument is related to Chinese beliefs. It is said that the Chinese called the temple where the "Sizhou Buddha" was enshrined as the "Sishui Temple", which gradually evolved into a place name. Regardless of which argument, it reflects the profound historical heritage and cultural accumulation of Surabaya.
Surabaya is not only an economically prosperous city, but also a charming tourist destination. The main attractions in the city include the House of Sampoerna, Tugu Pahlawan and Surabaya Zoo. In addition, visitors to Surabaya usually go to the surrounding area to climb volcanoes, such as the famous Mount Ijen and Mount Bromo, to experience the magnificence and mystery of nature. The cityscape of Surabaya is also fascinating. High-rise buildings, brilliant lights and ancient buildings reflect each other, showing the unique charm of this city.
Surabaya also enjoys a high reputation internationally and has established friendly city relations with many countries and regions. Among them, Xiamen, China and Surabaya officially established international friendly city relations on June 23, 2006. The two cities have carried out extensive and in-depth exchanges and cooperation in many fields such as economic and trade exchanges, cultural arts, sports competitions, and urban construction. This kind of international friendly exchanges and cooperation not only promotes the economic development and social progress of Surabaya, but also deepens the friendship and understanding between people of different countries.
Surabaya, Indonesia is a vibrant and charming city. It attracts the world's attention with its prosperous business atmosphere, long history, unique geographical location and rich tourism resources. In future development, Surabaya will continue to play its unique advantages and contribute to the prosperity and progress of Indonesia and the world.
Mount Ijen and Mount Bromo
This is from my trip last year to East Java Province in Indonesia, where I traveled all the way, departing after 1 AM, to witness the legendary volcanoes. Mount Ijen and Mount Bromo, the twin jewels of volcanoes on Java Island, each possess their unique charm.
Mount Ijen, under the night sky, attracts adventurers with its blue flames, like a mysterious signal light in nature.
Mount Bromo greets early-rising visitors with its spectacular sunrise in the morning, with fresh air and mist swirling around.
Around Mount Ijen, tough plants adapted to volcanic soil thrive, while the grasslands and forests of Mount Bromo provide a home for a variety of wildlife. Lake Kawah Ijen, the neighbor of Mount Ijen, with its emerald-green waters and the mystery shaped by volcanic activity, becomes a treasure in the hearts of explorers. These two volcanoes, in their own ways, tell the story of nature's power and beauty.
The air is filled with the smell of sulfur, and the ground is covered with the yellow of sulfur. Trees and grasses still stubbornly survive in such harsh conditions, which can't help but make one marvel at the tenacity and adaptability of life in nature. Even the small grasses in this harsh environment are a natural wonder.

Recommended itinerary:
It is recommended to take a one-day tour of Devil's Forest➕Little Africa. I chartered a car. I departed from the hotel at 5.30 in the morning and arrived at Devil's Forest in 1.5 hours. After playing in the morning, I went to Little Africa in the afternoon. Little Africa can drive into the scenic spot by yourself, which is quite convenient. The chartered car fee is RMB 300.
Brave walk and catch the sunrise at Mount Ijen
Here's a short summary of the climb:
**Climbing Mount Ijen**
Embarking on the climb up Mount Ijen begins in the pre-dawn hours, under the cover of darkness. Equipped with headlamps and guided by the moonlight, climbers ascend the rugged path, feeling the cool night air and hearing only the sounds of nature. As the journey progresses, the sky gradually lightens, revealing glimpses of the surrounding landscape. Upon reaching the summit, the first rays of sunlight peel away the darkness, unveiling the breathtaking beauty of the turquoise crater lake and the rugged volcanic terrain, making the early morning effort truly worthwhile.
Indonesian Bromo/Ijen Volcano | At this moment, the world is beneath my feet
Ijen and Bromo two-day travel guide
Day 1: Arrived at Surabaya at noon, our guide picked us up, and it was about a four-hour drive to the hotel. Since we were leaving at 1 a.m. on the 14th, we didn't do any sightseeing and went straight to the hotel to rest (our guides were very good, the Surabaya guide even came to the hotel in the afternoon wanting to take us out, but we were too rushed and didn't rest well, so we slept through the knocking and phone calls at the hotel)
9.14 At 1 a.m. we left Surabaya, and it started raining as soon as we left, with no sign of stopping. When we arrived at the rest area at the foot of Ijen volcano, the guide brought us breakfast and bought hot milk, and also got us raincoats. After breakfast, we followed the guide and set off, and the rain kept getting heavier and didn't stop! We started climbing at 2:30 a.m., the whole path was muddy, and the rain got so heavy that we were soaked through. There were porters along the way, and seeing how hard they worked, because it was already difficult to walk, let alone pull people, we couldn't bear to use their services even though we were very tired. Then we climbed up to the volcano by ourselves, it took about an hour, and it kept raining, we rested in a temporary shelter! I will never forget this experience in my life!!! Completely soaked, the raincoat couldn't cover at all. The wind was blowing fiercely, and by six o'clock we still couldn't see the volcano, just a big fog, we could only see the road beneath our feet, so we decided to go back down the mountain! One of the regrets of this trip was that we couldn't see the true face of Ijen volcano, which is quite something, but this experience will never be forgotten! After descending the mountain, it was about a three-hour drive to a hotel near Bromo, where we checked in and rested until midnight, then set off again.
Day 2: We left the hotel at 1 a.m. on 9.15 and arrived at Bromo at 3 a.m. Since there were wildfires that had not been extinguished when we went, we couldn't go to the landscape spot we most wanted to visit, kingkong, as it was closed and not open. So we could only go to the Seruni viewpoint, and we were worried that the rain wouldn't stop, but it did, which was good. On the way up, we could see the sunrise, which was very romantic! And the sky was full of stars, something you can't see in the city! You can ride a horse up! Then it was time for crazy photo taking, the journey was so much better than Ijen, after viewing from the observatory we went down to the foot of the mountain, and because of the wildfires, we couldn't climb the volcano, we could only look from afar at the foot of the mountain! Still, it was quite worth it!
