Tibet Unveiled: From Lhasa's Palaces to Everest's Base
After arriving in Tibet from Chengdu, my journey began in the vibrant city of hasa.
1. Lhasa and the Majestic Potala Palace
The highlight of Lhasa was undoubtedly Potala Palace. This stunning structure is awe-inspiring, with its iconic white and red buildings set against the mountains. Exploring the palace's interiors and seeing the intricate details of its shrines, murals, and halls offered a deep insight into Tibetan history and culture. Walking through Potala, I felt the weight of centuries of devotion and the beauty of Tibet's spiritual heart.
2. Exploring Xigaze
Moving on to Xigaze, I visited Tashilhunpo Monastery, home to the Panchen Lama. Xigaze's blend of ancient Tibetan architecture and modern touches provided a fascinating glimpse into life in this unique region.
3. Everest Base Camp: The Journey to the Roof of the World
Reaching Everest Base Camp was an adventure of a lifetime. Standing at the base of Mount Everest, with its massive peak towering above, was a surreal experience. The silence, broken only by the wind, and the vastness of the landscape made this an unforgettable highlight of my Tibet trip.
4. Tibetan Cuisine: A Flavorful Discovery
Tibetan food was a delight! Hearty, flavorful dishes like momos, thukpa, and butter tea warmed me in the high altitudes. The local food adds an extra layer of cultural experience, offering a taste of traditional Tibetan life.
5. Recommendations for Traveling in Tibet
Travelers should be mindful of the altitude-Tibet is high, and the air is thin. Carrying oxygen bottles, staying hydrated, and taking it slow are essential.

Potala Palace - A place to visit once in a lifetime
Visiting the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, is an awe-inspiring experience that blends history, culture, and spirituality. The palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands majestically atop Red Mountain, offering panoramic views of Lhasa and the surrounding landscapes.
From the moment you approach the palace, its grand architecture and intricate details captivate your attention. The structure is divided into two main parts: the White Palace, which served as the administrative quarters, and the Red Palace, dedicated to religious study and Buddhist prayer. Each section is adorned with vibrant murals, ancient statues, and sacred relics, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism.
Walking through the numerous chapels, halls, and rooms, you can feel the deep spiritual significance of the site. The golden roofs glistening in the sunlight, the aroma of burning incense, and the chants of monks create a serene and reflective atmosphere. The extensive collection of artifacts and scriptures offers a glimpse into the profound history and traditions of Tibet.
The climb to the top can be challenging due to the altitude for some as I saw many people using oxygen, but the effort is well worth it. As you ascend, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the city below and the surrounding mountains. It's a moment of tranquility and reflection, allowing you to fully appreciate the palace's grandeur and the natural beauty of Tibet.
Worth going once in your life! #lhasa #potalapalace #tibet #potala

Potala Palace - Lhasa must see
- Getting There - accessible from most places in Lhasa, get a taxi or ebike 🚕 🛵
- Notes - bring your passport as there are multiple security checks. no lighters, or vapes and no bottled water allowed inside. 🚬 also no pictures inside
- be prepared to queue outside, so bring a hat 👒 to prevent sunburn
Potala Palace is spectacular , the entire exterior is huge and you can get good photos from the Palace Square across the road. 🏯
take your time walking up the stairs. it's crowded inside but you can see the Dalai Lama's office, and various stupas from previous Lamas.
take some small bills and leave donations for various Buddhas.

Ganden Monastery - Lhasa
Ganden Monastery (Tibetan: དགའ་ལྡན) or Ganden Namgyeling or Monastery of Gahlden is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. It is in Dagzê County, Lhasa. The other two are Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery.
Ganden Monastery was founded in 1409 by Je Tsongkhapa Lozang-dragpa, founder of the Gelug order.
Was possible to visit a pressroom, where books were manually printed with the aid of large stamps. it’s possible to see the printed leaves and the wooden shelves between which the leaves are contained. Amazing experience!

Potala Palace - Lhasa - Tibet
Potala Palace, immense religious and administrative complex in Lhasa, southern Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It is situated atop Mar-po-ri (Red Mountain), 130m above the Lhasa River valley, and rises up dramatically from its rocky base. Potrang Karpo (completed 1648; White Palace) once served as the seat of the Tibetan government and the main residence of the Dalai Lama; from the mid-18th century it was used as a winter palace. Potrang Marpo (1694; Red Palace) houses several chapels, sacred statues, and the tombs of eight Dalai Lamas; it remains a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists.
King Srong-brtsan-sgam-po commissioned the building of a palace in Lhasa in the 7th century. Significantly smaller and less elaborate than its 13-square-km successor, it was named the Potala (“Pure Land” or “High Heavenly Realm”) for reasons that are not historically documented, although Mount Potala in India seems the likely source. Tibetan Buddhists acknowledge the Dalai Lama as the incarnation of Avalokiteshvara (Chinese: Guanyin), a bodhisattva whose home was on Mount Potala.
Of more than 1,000 rooms in the Potala, the ones considered most holy are the Chogyal Drubphuk and the Phakpa Lhakhang, remnants from the original palace of Srong-brtsan-sgam-po; the latter houses the sacred Arya Lokeshvara (Avalokiteshvara) statue. More than 200,000 statues and 10,000 altars are located within the sacred complex.

Jokhang Temple - Lhasa - Tibet
The Jokhang Temple is the holiest temple in Tibet, housing the life-size image of Buddha Jowa Sakyamuni. The outstanding architecture style and devoted pilgrimage are the best highlights of this 1300-year-old monastery.
Not being the largest or the oldest Tibetan monastery, but Jokhang Temple is the most revered and intensely spiritual sacred monastery in Tibet because of its important role in the development of Buddhism in Tibet. More importantly, the Jokhang Temple houses the one of a kind treasure of world Buddhism - the life-size image of 12-year-old Jowa Sakyamuni which has become the most revered idol in whole Tibetan region.
At the same time, the Jokhang Temple is more than 1,300 years old now while some other famous monasteries, such as Drepung Monastery, Tashilhunpo Monastery, Ganden Monastery are only around 600 years old. As the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism, constant swarms of pilgrims from different parts of Tibet come to Jokhang and prostrate outside the temple to the Buddha.
In 2000, the Jokhang was included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites as an extension to the Potala Palace.

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery - Shigatse - Tibet
Tashi Lhunpo Monastery (Tibetan: བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལྷུན་པོ་), founded in 1447 by the 1st Dalai Lama, is the traditional monastic seat of the Panchen Lama, and an historically and culturally important monastery in Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet.
The monastery was sacked when the Gorkha Kingdom invaded Tibet and captured Shigatse in 1791 before a combined Tibetan and Chinese army drove them back as far as the outskirts of Kathmandu, when they were forced to agree to keep the peace in the future, pay tribute every five years, and return what they had looted from Tashi Lhunpo.
The monastery is the traditional seat of successive Panchen Lamas, the second highest ranking tulku lineage in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The "Tashi" or Panchen Lama had temporal power over three small districts, though not over the town of Shigatse itself, which was administered by a dzongpön (prefect) appointed from Lhasa.

Tibet - an icy Winter Wonderland
Initially hesitant to try this trip in the Winter, I was bowled over by the combination of mysticism, culture, disciplined lifestyles and natural beauty thy Tibet had to offer.
Be prepared for altitude sickness, especially at the Base Camp stop - be sure to have sufficient oxygen supplies and Rhodiola pills. Food is super cheap and really generous portions are served. The local dumplings called Momos are great and yak meat is abundant. I wasn’t a big fan of the local butter tea though. The monasteries were beautiful but most trips include 10 too many so plan with your agent, your ideal itinerary.
It was super cold and hard to breathe (Everest region plummeted to -30 degrees at night) but definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. lots of driving this mountains and you feel transported into a different world. Quite surreal and the local people are very welcoming and friendly - intrigued by foreigners.
Definitely a trip worth taking!#tigeryear2022

Ganden Monastery in Tibet
The area surrounding Lhasa has some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the world. Moreover, nestled among the Himalayan peaks are numerous phenomenally interesting monasteries. Unlike so many temples and religious sites around the word, these monasteries clearly primarily serve the needs of monks, nuns and religious pilgrims rather than tourists. This gives them an authentic edge that is missing from other religious traveler destinations.#tibet #lhasa #monastery #freehotelstay
Potala Palace - The Star of Lhasa
Lhasa is one of the world’s highest major cities, it is defined by altitude and topography. Indeed, towering above the city, visible from almost every quarter, stands the Potala Palace. The Potala Palace not only features on China’s 50 RMB banknote, it is one of the most fascinating, historic, and sacred buildings in the entire world. The ruins of Zhongshan ancient fort - Gyantse
The ruins of Zhongshan ancient fort stand on the cliffs in the middle of the ancient city of Gyantse, and the entire group of ancient castles is staggered on the top of the mountain, with an altitude of 4020 meters, which looks very majestic in the middle of the nianchu river plain.
What makes Gyantse the most famous is that it has a heroic history that can be sung and wept. In the winter of 1903, the british invading army invaded Gyantse from Yadong and was met with stubborn resistance from the tibetan military and civilians. The british suffered heavy casualties and were forced to flee.
