🇮🇩 Hot Spring at Aek Rangat, Lake Toba
Aek Rangat is a well-known hot spring located on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Situated on the western shore of Samosir Island, Aek Rangat offers beautiful views of Lake Toba and the surrounding landscape. The hot springs at Aek Rangat are naturally heated by geothermal activity. The mineral-rich waters are believed to have therapeutic properties and provide a relaxing experience.
The larger bath house was not open during my visit. The guide brought me to a small restaurant next to it which had a tiny pool with hotspring water. Aek Rangat offers a natural and rustic experience so the facilities are basic. It would be good to bring your own supplies.

🇮🇩 Stay in Traditional Batak house in Hotel Tuk-Tuk Timbul by Lake Toba
During my visit to Samosir Island, I spent two nights in a traditional Batak house. Despite the lack of air conditioning, the nights were comfortably cool. I had expected many mosquitoes but was pleasantly surprised to find very few. Overall, it was a delightful stay.
Ambiance/Facilities:
The room offered basic amenities, without a TV or air conditioning.
Highlights:
The most striking feature was the magnificent view of Lake Toba right at my doorstep. I woke up early to catch the stunning sunrise, which was truly breathtaking.
Value:
The stay was budget-friendly, making it an excellent choice for travelers looking for an affordable option.
Rating: 4/5
One drawback was the absence of a kettle in the room. Instead, the hotel provided a thermos of hot water, which was available for a charge of 15k per bottle.

🇮🇩 Sunrise on Lake Toba @ Samosir Island
Lake Toba is a tranquil haven located in the northern part of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 74,000 years ago. It spans about 1,145 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 505 meters.
The lake's serene and picturesque setting is complemented by Samosir Island, which lies in the middle of Lake Toba. Samosir Island itself is almost as large as Singapore and is known for its traditional Batak culture, scenic landscapes, and charming villages. During my stay in Samosir Island, I had the chance to experience breathtaking sunrise on the lake right outside my hotel room by the lake.

🇮🇩 From Medan to Lake Toba by Bus
Taking public transport from Medan to Lake Toba may not be the most comfortable and convenient way but it is definitely doable. I took a local bus from Amplas bus terminal in Medan to Parapat. It was a 4 hours ride from Medan to Parapat through winding and narrow roads especially towards the end of the ride. As my hotel was located along the main road, I asked the bus driver to drop me off at my hotel but unfortunately he dropped me at the wrong hotel so I had to walk around 2 km to my hotel. Luckily a kind local gave me a ride on his motorbike.

🇮🇩 Parhallow Viewpoint overlooking Lake Toba, Samosir Island
We stopped by Parhallow Viewpoint and Coffee Shop for lunch during the tour around Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The viewpoint is about 7 km and 15 min drive from Tomok Ajibata Port. It is a scenic spot and coffee shop which offers breathtaking views of Lake Toba, one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 74,000 years ago. The restaurant serves simple local delicacies and a variety of beverages, including locally sourced coffee and tea. There was a coffee plant right next to our table which my guide pointed out to me.

🇮🇩 Lakes Within a Lake, Samosir Island
I got the opportunity to visit two lakes within a lake during my tour around Samosir Island. The concept of "lakes within a lake" refers to smaller lakes situated on islands that are themselves located within a larger lake. This unique geographical feature is present in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia, which contains two notable smaller lakes on Samosir Island: Lake Sidihoni and Lake Aek Natonang. Both lakes are surrounded by lush greenery and offer a tranquil and picturesque setting. The calm waters and natural surroundings provide a perfect spot for relaxation and photography.

🇮🇩 Stroll around Tuk-Tuk, Samosir
Tuktuk Siadong is a small village is located in a small cape in Samosir Island. I arrived in Samosir Island at noon. After checking in to my hotel, I decided to explore Tuk-Tuk on foot since I had no other means of transport. The village was about 2 km from my hotel. There were many hotels in Tuk-Tuk. Some of the hotels facing Lake Toba had private beach and nice views of the lake.
I bought some souvenirs at few of the souvenir shops in Tuk-Tuk. Many shops sell wooden sculptures of batak houses. Do get some
keychains of batak houses for your loved ones
when you are there!

🇮🇩 Ferry Rides between Parapat and Samosir, Lake Toba
There are a few ferry terminals in Parapat offering ferry services to different locations in Samosir Island. The hotel staff dropped me off at the newly built Pelabuhan Ajibata. The new ferry terminal seemed to offer higher-end ferry services to tourists and I was told that there was no ferry available that day. The staff I approached at the new ferry terminal directed me to a small port next to it. That's the port where locals take local ferries to and fro Samosir.
And so I boarded the local ferry from Pelabuhan Ajibata to Tomok (Rp 12,000). The ferry runs regularly so there is no need to buy tickets in advance. The ferry conductor will collect ticket fees from the passengers one by one.
The ferry looked quite old and rundown but no complaints since the fare was so cheap. There was no air-conditioning too. There were also vendors selling snacks on the ferry.
I sat at the open deck to immerse myself in the beauty of Lake Toba and took lots of pictures! It's definitely an eye-opening experience for me. One should try to take the local ferry instead of the premium ferry for a truly local experience in Lake Toba regions!

🇮🇩 Stay in Parapat by Lake Toba
I spent one night at Gapura Hotel in Parapat, a small town in North Sumatra on the edge of Lake Toba, before taking a ferry to Samosir Island the following day. My hotel room was facing the lake and the view of Lake Toba was priceless.
The hotel is situated along the main road. The view of Lake Toba along the road was amazing! However the road conditions were bad. There was literally no space for pedestrians to walk. I felt quite unsafe walking on the road as I had to walk very close to the edge to avoid being run over by passing vehicles and constantly keep a look out for vehicles behind me. There were many stalls and small restaurants along the main road. Most of them offer a very nice view of Lake Toba and the prices were cheap.

In Taiwan, instead of heading to the many cafes and restaurant, one thing that you should never miss out is the night markets located around the city of taipei. Of course, Shilin Night Market is the night market that both locals and foreigners are well aware off when visiting taipei. Shilin is popular since it is located in the heart of taipei and is located around many schools, therefore attracting the many locals. The prices in the food street here in Shilin are also much lower than the ones sold in the mall and plus, the vendors cook the food fresh right infront of your eyes.
Make sure you come here with an empty stomach, because there is too many stall vendors here and im sure one night wont be able for you to try each and every stall. Shilin market is open everyday and it is located at: No. 101, Jihe Rd, Shilin District, Taipei City, Taiwan 111
The Market Where Only Locals Go To
#bangkoktrip #thailand #locals #market #cheap #budgetfriendly #shopping
Bangkok has uncountable amount of markets, but for us we prefer to go to the locals go to markets. Simply because this is where we won't be faced with touristy prices, but instead reasonable friendly prices which is wallet friendly and the real Thai deal!
There is a market called World Market located at 109 17 Thawi Watthana, Bangkok 10170, Thailand which is just a short 30-45mins drive west of Bangkok City. It is a huge areas with long rows of market selling local Thai grocerries and Thai snacks and food too!
We had this 2 bowl of noodles which only cost less than 120bahts. You won't get this in Bangkok City or other touristy markets. So head on down here especially when you have your own personal transport.

Lisbon, Portugal hotels are generally quite expensive in the city where a night stay can cost you over 250sgd easily. If you are okay with a simple hotel where it covers breakfast, a comfy queen size bed, a clean bathroom with bathtub and a convenient store opposite your hotel you can consider staying in Mecure Hotel located at Av. José Malhoa 23, 1099-051 Lisboa, Portugal.
We only paid 179Sgd for a 2 night stay here in Lisbon and for a full facility hotel with even a pool in the hotel is already a steal.

I know many say thai food which is halal is not authentic. But hey NaNa thai has many branches in singapore that has been serving thai food for quite some time already and they have made a good reputation for themselves.
Food prices here are also quite reasonable with a wide range of varieties and most important all branches here are halal too! The pandan chicken and Tom yum soup here is a definite must try, plus portion for 2 pax can also be quite generous. Look out for their restaurants around Singapore on Google, they have 4 outlets located islandwide.
Budget Friendly Good Food in Mapo-gu
Mangwon market is a traditional market in Mapo-gu that is within close proximity to Hongdae and the Han River so it’s easy to stop by, grab some food and be on your way. You can even pack them for a picnic by the Han River!
They have many things here in the market, from fresh produce and ready made bites.
They are known for some delicious Jokbal or pig trotters. They simmer way for hours until the meat is nice and tender. From experience, don’t buy from the big mainstream grocery stores. It isn’t as good. But from the farmer’s market like this, oooh it’s good!
One of my other favorite is the Chicken bites! The stall solely focus on bite size dakganjang (chicken bites). There is a wide variety of chicken bites that have been doused in different sauces. My favorite are the spicy selection. if you like chicken; you’ll like this stall! Dont miss it! 😋
Address - 411 Mangwon-Dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul
Directions - Mangwon Station, exit 2. Coming out of the station make a u-turn to the right and walk into the neighbourhood about 5 mins to the entrance of the market that will come up on your right.

From Medan to Lake Toba by public transport

I took the local bus from Amplas bus terminal in Medan to Parapat. (Rp 60,000) If you are taking the bus from Kualanamu Airport to Medan city (Rp40,000), take note that the bus may not stop right at Amplas bus station. I had to ask the bus driver to stop in the middle of the road and walked 20 min to the bus terminal. I think the new bus terminal is still under construction as of September 2022. Taiwan Circular Ride Can Be Quite Scenic
Do you know that Taipei in Taiwan is a very well connected city especially the public transport, apart from it be convenient, do you know this can also become a very scenic ride around the city of Taipei!
There are more than 5 MRT(train) lines in Taiwan but one of the more recent train line which open was the circular line which is a driverless train where you are able to go to the front to take photo and videos of your ride.
Although this isn't one of the biggest train here in Taipei, you will still be able to get ample seating for sure! This train brings you to 4 different districts in Taiwan, Xindian, Zhonghe, Banqiao and Xinzhuang and most of it all the train will be able to have a scenic view of the XinBei Bridge, which stretches over the gorgeous Erching Floodway.
A great way to see Taipei at a cheaper rate ^^

Lake Toba Samosir Island, a tranquil haven
I planned a last minute solo trip Lake Toba after I decided to call off the trip the Cambodia due to the current situation. I chose to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Medan as the flight ticket was the cheapest. Lake Toba caught my attention after a quick check on Google map. Isn't it the world's largest crater lake that I learned about in high school Geography?
Getting There -
Take the bus from Amplas bus terminal to Parapat. (Rp 60,000) Then take a ferry to Samosir Island from one of the few ferry terminals in Parapat. I took the ferry from Pelabuhan Ajibata to Tomok (Rp 12,000)
If you are taking the bus from Kualanamu Airport to Medan city (Rp40,000), take note that the bus may not stop right at Amplas bus station. The current terminal is made up of a few pondoks (stalls). No facilities there.
Attractions -
Check out the last two pictures. I happened to pass by what seemed like a tourist information centre when I took a walk through Tuk-Tuk area. The poster shows quite a lot of attractions in Lake Samosir and the neighbouring regions which I can't seem to find much information on Google. I picked a few attractions and toured around half the island on a motorbike. It's a pity that I can't ride a bike so I hired a local to take me on the bike tour for one day. (Rp500,000)
Attractions visited:
Huta Siallagan, Batu Kursi Raja Siallagan ( Stone Chair of King Siallagan )
Batu Passa and Liang Sipogu
Beaches which include Sigurgur, Parbaba Beach, Pasir Putih
Aek Rangat (supposed to have a hot spring but it was not open. The guide brought me to a small restaurant next to it which had a tiny pool with hotspring water)
Bukit Burung (It's a lookout point further up the hill from Aek Rangat which many locals not know about. Happened to chance upon it on Google map. Even my guide didn't know about it!! So it was quite an accomplishment to bring him to a place that he had never been!)
Lake Sidihoni
Danau Aek Natonang
Batu marhosa
Air Terjun Sigarattung (Sampuran Na Pitu)
Parhallow viewpoint and coffee shop

The Famously Delicious Golden Prawn Seafood
