A Solo Dinner at Haku: A Taste of Japan in Tanjung Bungah
#localfoodies
Craving a taste of Japan without leaving Penang? Haku Japanese Cuisine in Tanjung Bungah is the perfect spot. Last week, I decided to treat myself to a solo dinner and was not disappointed.
The restaurant's minimalist decor creates a serene ambiance, perfect for a quiet meal. I opted for a cozy seat at the sushi counter, where I could watch the skilled chefs at work. The fresh, high-quality ingredients were evident in every dish.
I started with a refreshing bowl of miso soup, followed by a platter of assorted sushi and sashimi. The sushi was perfectly balanced, with the rice soft and the fish incredibly fresh. The sashimi melted in my mouth, each slice a burst of flavor.
To complete my meal, I indulged in a bowl of ramen. The rich, flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and tender chashu pork were simply divine.
Haku is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. Whether you're a sushi connoisseur or a casual diner, you're sure to be impressed.

It’s Sushi Time! An affordable sushi place in Baneshwor!
#voyagevibes #eatlikealocal #sushi
#sushi #kathmandu
I’ve always craved authentic sushi after trying it abroad and most of the Japanese restaurants in town only have Maki or Nigiri but this place has different types of sushis which was interesting.
I usually order in from Bhoj and the Bacon Cheese Sushi is my go to and it tasted even more delicious here. The Fried Hot Salmon is also another fav!
Chicken Katsu Don was a little dry, but the sauce was good. I think if they introduced pork/prawn versions, it would be a hit.
The staffs are pretty friendly and nice. Definitely would recommend because the price is quite affordable for the quantity as well. A total value for money!
Sushi dinner
Uokura is a very good pick if you are wanting to have a nice Japanese dinner or say a sushi dinner. The food was delicious, if you order meat, don't forget to tell how it should be cooked (well done, middle, rare, medium well).
At lunch time, they also tell you which options are halal among the different menus. I think it was a little expensive but I think it was a nice experience. The mackerel was perfectly salted and the skin was crispy. The bento had a lot of different stuff like egg, salmon roe which was fresh. I also loved the pickled radish for flavour.

Reasonable prices
The food is fresh. I don’t suggest the set menu but a la crate as you will find them more exciting. Know that the restaurant is not located in the Solaria Stage. It is on the side of the road as it’s on a standalone shop house. The food here is fresh and good value.
But expect to wait for 30 minutes or more as this place is quite popular. The ordering process is kinda confusing though for foreigners. The English translation isn’t the most accurate and they have many posters on the walls in Japanese which I don’t understand.

Japanese food
The ambience is great with Japanese decorations. The staff was very friendly. However the food did not meet our expectations. The okomoniyaki was not authentic but was better than others. Udon, curry, miso, katsu don were away from authentic Japanese food. Service is great and the food options are plentiful.
I can't tell you just how big the menu is. The food is good too. We got a few sushi rolls and the grilled banana dessert. Can’t fault this restaurant and recommend it . A bit more expensive than the warungs and restos you’ll find around the island. Overall, it's a big and spacious Japanese style restaurant that’s off the main roads with good food.

Best sushi in Kyoto
As opposed to things being complicated and foreign, the staff was very welcoming and spoke English quite well. I recommend you book a table beforehand as the restaurant is quite small. This might have been one of the best sushi I tried in Japan. The sushi was super fresh and I highly recommend trying the Bonito.
They also had Japanese wine that paired nicely with the fish. Oysters were meaty and fresh. This is a family business with great service and better food. Reservations highly recommended. They have a bar with 6 seats + 4 tables in the front, they have other tables in the back.

Fantastic food
I had eaten at a blue sushi restaurant in lincoln before but somehow the one is Austin was an even better food experience. It's vibe is upscale and relaxed. They are known for vegan and vegetarian friendly options as well along with usual options that you'd expect from a sushi place.
The serving staff was very knowledgeable and took time to explain things and it's sourcing. They timely reminded us of what the ingredients were and if we had any allergies. This was my first time enjoying their happy hour. It's a great deal. My sake was $5 and they had 2 sashimi dishes (each at $10!) Both the Truffle Salmon and Yellowtail Serrano Sashimi dishes were excellent. If you can come by sooner. Make the best of the happy hour!

Working in Central, I often have lunch in Sheung Wan. One day, I discovered this sushi restaurant run by a Japanese chef. The lunch sets are very affordable, so my colleagues and I decided to give it a try. We each ordered a set.
The chawanmushi in the Masa Sushi Set is very smooth with a hint of bonito flavor. The salad with Japanese-style dressing is slightly sour and very appetizing. The seaweed soup udon looks simple but has a chewy texture, definitely not like Hong Kong-style udon. The sushi 🍣 includes 9 pieces. Sitting at the sushi bar, you can watch the chef make the sushi fresh to order. The sushi rice is neither too loose nor too firm, with thick slices of sashimi on top. My favorites were the scallop and sea urchin, both fresh and sweet.
The Unagi Don Set comes with miso soup instead of udon. The eel is thick and plentiful, grilled to a fragrant finish with tender meat and a sweet and salty sauce. The rice is Japanese rice, which has a chewy texture.
Overall, the food quality is high, the prices are reasonable, and the value is excellent.

A new restaurant
A new restaurant and cocktail bar that’s the perfect mix of yin and @jang.london ☯️🍣🧘🏻♀️ Oh sorry, I meant @engel.london and @jang.london a dual launch inside the STUNNING seriously) @theroyalexchange which pairs a 1920s post-war Berlin speakeasy and a…Korean-Japanese fusion restaurant?! 🤔 A match about as unlikely as Simon Cowell and Carmen Electra (yes, that actually happened) but one still provides beautiful ‘YUK HWE’ GOCHUJANG STEAK TARTARE, SUSHI & SASHIMI CROCODILE, SIRLOIN STEAK ROBATA, ‘PAINTED’ VODKA APPLE MARTINIS AND SALTED CARAMEL-BISCOFF KOREAN DOUGHNUT babies! 👶🏼 A project from former @danddlondon CEO Des Gunewardena that absolutely hits the mark on looks - it’s a wonderful experience to dine there, or even just grab a cocktail overlooking the mezzanine if you want to come in at a slightly lower price point. The food is definitely good and reasonably priced for the location (£36 for that steak, dece imo) but I think for where it is they should probably charge more and make it really top, top quality?? So for now, if I had to pick between the two, then I’m loving Engels instead… 👼🏻👌🏻 #letbothentertainyouthough #venuelooksgreatfromallengels #janglondon #prinvite

Tsim Sha Tsui | A Feast of Seafood Dinner. Kuromon Seafood.
Just came back from Japan, where I had some grilled seafood by the shore, and I've been missing it ever since. So, back in Hong Kong, I found a place that serves grilled seafood.
Supreme Seafood Grill $128
This grilled shellfish dish is incredibly rich in ingredients, featuring large scallops the size of ping pong balls, sea urchin, shrimp, Hiroshima oysters, salmon roe, and is seasoned with green onions, radish slices, and a special sauce. The sea urchin melts into the sauce when heated, creating a sweet and creamy flavor. The broth is also very rich, so delicious that I drank it all up.
Sea Urchin and Crab Miso Grilled in Shell $88
The grilled shell is larger than usual, with plenty of creamy crab miso, which is quite rich in crab flavor, and is served with soda crackers to eat together.
Kuromon Special: Ultimate Abalone Seafood Roll $158
The filling is more than the sushi rice, and the ingredients are not ordinary; it includes abalone, salmon, tuna, shrimp, octopus, and egg. It's very satisfying to eat!

Sushi and Philosophy, True Art
SUSHI GINZA ODORENA
Address
461 5th Ave
New York
10017
Give a man a fish and feed him all day; teach a man to fish and feed him all his life. Such a pearl of wisdom! But there is little evidence that fish should be served here, especially when it happens at the newly created Ginza Onodera sushi restaurant, awarded two Michelin stars. After decades of New Yorkers' disdain for sushi, this versatile Little Tokyo restaurant is changing that scenario, and its revenge is nigiri, which is better served cold and seasoned (from Ginza to edomaezushi). Oceans wash the shores in the hope of reclaiming this fish.
Ginza's seasonal omakase is not just a freshly prepared dish from Tokyo's prestigious Tsukiji market, and it does not depend on exotic varieties. Ginza, which debuted here last year, offers epic, breathtaking craftsmanship that made our interlocutor, who lives in Japan four months a year and dines in several of its best restaurants, close his eyes after tasting a week-old golden aiz snapper and say, “Shut up. Give me a second. Let me enjoy this moment.” Ginza serves fish the way a diamond serves carbon: with impressive perfection, filled with luxury. It's the fish that traps us.
A roasted barracuda with barely noticeable charring fills the mouth with smoke and envelops the umami tongue. The liver of the sea devil, cooked over low heat in wine for two days, goes well with other dishes, resembling crispy foie gras. Bonito, which is usually served in the form of a sharp slice, here is a bright red supreme with the addition of soy from katsuo, a fish roll "Tootsie Roll" in the center of the dish. Fatty tuna is so marbled that it can be mistaken for carpaccio. To preserve the natural brine, uni from Hokkaido comes in sealed bags with seawater (which might as well be "tears of joy").
All this is led by chef Masaki Saito, who wields his knives in sacred silence in this sushi temple. At one point during a recent visit, he grimaced and sucked on his index finger after slicing ginger. The stunned visitors held their breath until he showed an intact finger and calmly declared, “I'm a professional.” In Ginza, understatement is an exquisite art form.

Local conveyor belt sushi restaurant, a must-try in Ueno | Tokyo
#TokyoTravel
📌 Ooedo (活魚大江户 上野店)
Another conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Ueno that I would like to recommend. Prices start at only 180 yen. The food is good quality, fresh, and the rice is very delicious!!
To be honest, I didn't plan to go to this restaurant! But because I was hungry and couldn't wait in line for the famous sushi restaurant, I decided to walk into the restaurant next door where there was an empty table! It turned out that it was very good!!! The rice was delicious and had a unique flavor. When eaten with fresh, juicy ingredients, it was awesome!!!
The restaurant has a conveyor belt for us to choose our own sushi or order directly from the chef. There is an English menu with clear pictures. The price starts at 180 yen and up, with the color of the plate separated by price.

Favourite sushi store in Town - Sushiro 🍣
It’s my second visit to Sushiro within a month! It seems like Sushiro has become the most popular sushi chain restaurant in Singapore as seen by the queue during meal time. Fear not, just download their app and make an online reservation, remember to check in when you reach the store and soon your turn would be called.
I love that their ingredients are super duper fresh and the variety of sushi make choosing what to eat extra difficult! They also have seasonal menu or monthly recommendations with interesting choices of sushi 🍣.
My go-to order are usually Salmon belly sushi, scallop sushi and sweet shrimp sushi. The price point is very very affordable and The quality is always good at Sushiro. You would never be disappointed! #foodie #sushi #singapore
Kyoto's Culinary Market
Kyoto's Nishiki Market is a culinary paradise! From the moment I stepped in, I was captivated by the incredible variety of food offerings. The bustling stalls presented a delightful assortment of local delicacies and flavors that left me in awe.
One of the highlights was undoubtedly the fresh seafood. The stalls lined with vibrant seafood, from succulent sashimi to perfectly grilled skewers, showcased the region's maritime bounty. The taste was simply unparalleled – a testament to the market's commitment to quality.
But Nishiki Market isn't just about seafood. The market's vibrant energy was palpable as I explored the narrow alleyways, discovering unique street foods that tempted my taste buds. I couldn't resist trying the mouthwatering takoyaki, its crispy exterior giving way to a tender and flavorful center. And the aroma of freshly fried tempura was irresistible – a true feast for the senses.
One cannot overlook the variety of pickled vegetables and local Kyoto snacks that adorned the stalls. The umami-packed tsukemono (pickles) added a delightful tang to the experience, and the assortment of mochi-based treats provided a sweet contrast to the savory delights. There was even a Snoopy' souvenir store with many cute snoppy snacks and items!!!!!
While Nishiki Market is undoubtedly a food lover's paradise, it's also a cultural immersion. The interactions with the friendly vendors, who passionately shared stories about their offerings, added a personal touch that made the experience even more memorable.
In conclusion, Nishiki Market is a gastronomic journey that shouldn't be missed. The market's kaleidoscope of flavors, the warmth of the people, and the authentic cultural experience all come together to create an unforgettable adventure for food enthusiasts and travelers alike. Definitely check it out when you're in Kyoto! #kyoto #nishikimarket #food #sushi #sashimi
The amazing people and of course food 😉
Whilst in Japan, I met some amazing people from around the world!! Fun fact, I'm travelling to Finland next year to visit a good friend I made in Japan, how exciting 🤩
I visited the Shaun the Sheep farm which was so fun and cute 🫶 but the weather was extremely and humid 🤧 fortunately I had a sun umbrella, I may have died that day otherwise!! Highly recommend getting a sun umbrella if you happen to visit Japan in the summer!
Here are some pics of food I ate during my stay. It may be expensive to get to Japan, but it sure is cheap in the country with my average meal costing around £8 😱
I recommend checking out the small alleyway restaurants and ramen shops!!

Only the Freshest - Ganko Sushi
As you step into Ganko Sushi, you are immediately greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance - tall ceilings, traditional Japanese décor featuring wooden furnishings, paper lanterns, and delicate artwork that reflects the rich cultural heritage of Japan. The centerpiece of Ganko Sushi is undoubtedly the sushi bar, where skilled sushi chefs showcase their craft with precision and finesse.
Besides omakase, they have an ala-carte menu that offers an extensive selection of sushi and sashimi, ranging from classic favorites to innovative creations. I would definitely recommend their melt-in-your-mouth fresh fatty tuna sashimi- each bite is a revelation that celebrates the beauty of simplicity and the purity of flavors.
Location-wise, the restaurant is located on the first floor of the current UBS building (previously Park Mall), conveniently accessible by bus and MRT - Dhoby Ghaut.
