Songjiang quest: Huanghe water front
Songjiang district is under urban upgrade project and green developments of the city. If you visit Songjiang, you see this area is surrounded by many rivers, channels (52) and new waterfronts.
Huanghe waterfront is located along the main road, next to important building complexes of apartments, commercial malls and hotels. This waterfront provides such a gorgeous view, and allows you to go for a short walk to refresh your mind. Like a little bubble in of nature when you only have a few minutes to spare.
At any given moment of the day you can see people enjoying walks, exercises or even jogging (although I don’t think they have enough space, maybe just add the waterfront to their jogging route). This front is located a few minutes from the Wulonghu park, if you take the main road (Rongyue Rd) and move South. If not, you have the option to visit the Gold Street just across the street for shopping or enjoying a nice meal.

Songjiang quest: Golden Street
Songjiang district is a beautiful area in Shanghai, not well-known by people despite this was the town that originated Shanghai city. The deer is the symbol of this district. Songjiang Xincheng Gold Street is a beautiful area that comprises many shops, restaurants, commercial malls and small amusement area. Streets are pedestrians-only. Perfect for one day-trip.
Songjiang Gold Street go from Rongyue Rd to Guangxing Rd, now covering all block. Pedestrian streets are wide, probably to held stands during seasonal festivals in the area. During weekends, amusement area with cute cars, wheels and train are very popular with the kids.
Most shops seems to be quite small but modern design, clothing shops look fancy. More than restaurants, ice cream shops and ice tea shops were the ones bringing my attention, but this very hot afternoon made me biased. Nevertheless, was a nice stroll in this part of the city!

Songjiang quest: Wulonghu Park
Wulonghu Park in Songjiang district seems to be one of the newest green developments the city’s urban upgrade projects for embellishment. This embellishment plans include channel and waterfront management. If you visit Songjiang, you see this area is surrounded by many rivers, channels (52) and waterfronts. This area resembles a little Chongming Island wetlands.
Wulonghu Park seems to be quite new, I find it in the map but can’t find references of the name of this river. This green area is quite big, but trees are still small (recently planted/moved). Therefore, not much shadow during the day, and for a hot July day was not a good idea. However, I drag myself around because this area was so beautiful.
There are many paths to follow, that goes under the bridge to continue your walk without worrying about main road (very easy access and to locate, too). Few places to rest. During the night you can see few building lights and gives a nice (and romantic) view of the city. Paths require better lighting, but I’m sure will be added soon.
No many mosquitoes 🦟, despite the fact is summer and besides the river (big plus). But don’t forget your sunblock ☀️

Songjiang quest: Fuyue Hotel
Fuyue Hotel is one of the biggest hotels in Shanghai, with enough capacity to receive over 1,500 people for a given event. When you enter, you first get to admire the palm trees and a gorgeous fountain mid lobby.
Rooms are big and clean, although a bit expensive (~700RMB per night). There are three restaurants available in 1st (buffet style) and 2nd floors (seafood🦞). Food is quite good, specially the pastry (and I don’t even like desserts🍰). Many different dishes are available, noddles and rice as basic staples, and fruit to refreshing your stomach after eating so much.
Fuyue offers a gymnasium and a swimming pool, perfect for these summer days. Something I found absolutely surprising was to find a KTV in 2F. This hotel feels like indoors city. Additionally, Songjiang’s waterfront and few commercial malls and restaurants are available a few steps away from main door.

Songjiang quest: JF Hotel
Songjiang district is a bit so know and yet such beautiful district in Shanghai. Local government has invested a lot in city embellishments and this area is not the exception. This area is supposed to be the historical origin of Shanghai, land of rice and fish. If you want to stay here and explore, there are a few nice hotel options for you (and prices range can be very different). Additionally, not all hotels receive foreigners and you are required to be very careful where you make your booking.
Jinfeng International Hotel is definitely a great choice. Spacious, calm environment and palace-like decoration makes you feel like a queen/king 👑. My room was VIP (4th pic), with a deluxe bed. Super comfortable, nevertheless I will complain a bit about cleaning. Room and bathroom are big, with lot of space in closets.
You can chose to work from bed, the elegant sofa or the desk. Additionally, there is a nice resting space in lobby area. Wifi is open, and fast (big plus). Breakfast is included, buffet are is located in B1. They have salad, eggs, noodle soup, fried noodles or porridge available. Not many options, but better than other hotels I had visited. No coffee, either.

Songjiang quest: Iced drinks in summer
Songjiang district is a bit so know and yet such beautiful district in Shanghai. Local government has invested a lot in city embellishments and this area is not the exception. This area is supposed to be the historical origin of Shanghai, land of rice and fish (and you definitely can find many seafood 🦞 restaurants here).
This summer ☀️ mornings have proven to be hotter than any other day of the year. My visit to Coffee & Milk after a bike ride was extremely refreshing (although they could hurry a bit more in preparing the drink 🥤 before I passed out of insolation). Staff doesn’t speak English at all.
This drinks-only shop offers a variety of coffee drinks, milk teas and bubble teas, hot or cold. Coffee & Milk is located besides the Fuyue Hotel, in same building complex area so it’s easy to spot from the distance (but hard to find in maps). Drinks are quite nice, my option went for a passion fruit lemonade drink that made wonders with my thirst.

Sunday stroll: Shaanxi South & Xinle Rds
For Sunday afternoon, nothing’s feels more joyful than walking around and explore new areas of the city. Streets around Xuhui are absolutely beautiful. So many trees and many old style architectural buildings that are considered cultural heritage, but only few belong to Shanghai’s Municipal Government (indicated with plaque).
Shaanxi South Rd is full of cute stores and tiny restaurants, that gives an impression of European style influence over traditional Chinese culture. On the other hand, Xinle Road is full of gorgeous little clothing shops that makes you feel in Paris. Many of these shops are vintage, very luxurious for an specific clientele.
If you are planning for a shopping 🛍 day, come to this area. Even if you decide not to buy anything, walking around this area during a summer afternoon was quite refreshing. Gave me time to admire the decoration, so different between each shop. If you continue your way, you will find Xiangyang park close by. And many cool restaurants.

Shopping mall in Shaanxi South
If you are looking for a fancy shopping center 🛍 is a beautiful area, Parkson is the place for you. Located in Huaihai Middle Road, Parkson shopping building is located a few meters from Xiangyang Park and Huaimao Greenland. Additionally, the traditional beautiful streets of Shaanxi South Road.
1F is surrounded by luxury shops with jewelry, make up and perfumes for all ladies. There is also a Starbucks available in case you want to sit down for a bit, or decide what to buy. So many pretty and shiny things 😍.
In B1 you can find the Parkson supermarket, design is also beautiful, small and fancy. For summertime, the supermarket is offering a great selection of fruits. Next to a ‘grab & take out’ McDonald’s. Balance of healthy and fast food 😂

When you need nature
Xiangyang Park in Huaihai Middle Rd is a very popular place to visit during Sunday’s afternoon. Park is relatively small, yet spacious enough to have a children game area, historic/cultural pictures exhibition wall, fountain, and a pavilion (Liujiao).
There are many people doing exercises and walking around this park. Many of them seems very familiar with the place, like it’s their own garden 😂. Many people are seen walking their dogs, sometimes dogs without a leash 🐾🐶.
The fountain area has Greek style, bit uncommon in China. There is a plain green area that would be nice for sports, but seems to be prohibited to enter. Only to admire the flowers from the distance or maybe observe the pictures exhibit wall from the other side of the park.
The exhibit wall is open, with many beautiful pictures of people, nature and architecture related to this area. Nevertheless, due to light exposure it’s hard to take a representative picture.
If you have some free time and you are around South Shaanxi area, come and visit!

Small art exhibit in FOR
From June 17 to June 27 you will find a small art exhibition in FOR Tianwu Space. This exhibition is open to any visitor, free of charge. Art introduces a few artists, with an unexpected variety of styles.
Although the exhibition is in an open glass room to attract the attention of pedestrians, the amount of light exposed makes it a bit difficult to appreciate (and capture). Many reflections and distractions.
Outside the room, the black & white art made me curious. Adeliana’s draws of Frida Kahlo we’re de ones that brought my attention first. Most of the art belongs to German artists. Nevertheless, my favorite is the Black queen 👑. Simple, and yet inspiring. Likewise, the stormtrooper with the fries made me smile.
This art is available for purchasing. Prices vary depending on art and artists.

FOR buildings: Past and Present
FOR Tianwu Space is a quite interesting mall/business building area. On one side, you have an old European style architecture, and the other side of the complex is a regular modern office building. Both part of same complex.
Old building has a relative heritage appearance, with several shops, restaurants, cafes, an English training center and few offices inside. I found interesting to see the ‘VIP’ floor. This building only has two entrances.
Modern building is more like a small mall common in China, with similar shops, restaurants, cafes and offices (in upper floors). This one is bigger, with many entrances (most restaurants have entrance in and out this building). Most visitors only enter this complex, what gives the impression the other building is more expensive or unattractive for them.
Given its appearance, I tried to look for more information online about this building complex. However, it’s relevance as historical building or cultural importance still remains in the dark. No information available in English, at least.

Street market in Fangdian Road
For a weekend stroll around Shanghai, I decided to visit a place in Fangdian Road (that seems to be closed). However, found a nice surprise right outside Exit 3 of metro: a street market. This market is mostly selling jewelry and accessories.
Both jewelry stands are very popular with girls, that pass around and try the earrings or necklaces. The tea stand is quite nice, specially the red tea. You get to decide how much or even mix different teas to make your own blend.
Additionally, my big surprise was to find few pets for sell. You find little cute birds 🐦 , bunnies 🐰, tiny hamsters 🐹, tow types of 🐢 and baby ducks 🦆. Some of the turtles were so tiny! This is the first time I see such pet store in the open in China. I did felt sorry for the birds, they should be free, not in cages.
If you have some free time during this weekend, I’ll suggest you to come an visit. I just love these kind of markets. And even if this one is small, kids get super excited with the animals (you are allowed to touch some of them).

Night stroll near the Bund
Taking a summer night stroll around the Bund area is always a good idea if you want to set yourself free of stress and ease your mind. Even from the distance, you can enjoy the Bund lights, the people taking pictures and admiring the beauty of this area.
Considering light spectacle starts from 6pm, and sunset is usually around 7pm, enjoying the natural changes in the sky while you admire how colors take the night is calming. Despite the chaos around you. Always good to remember the Bund area is not only on one side of the river, but the beautiful flowers and architecture requires additional attention.
A fun surprise can be decoration, if you take a momento to enjoy what’s around you. Like a scary-looking window that made few people to stop after initial glance (3er pic). One girl even screamed. Laughing a few seconds after.
Night strolls are a good reminder of the architectural and natural beauty that Shanghai possess.

Any plans for this long weekend? Come to visit the Dishui Lake and Lingang’s Shopping Festival! This festival has many games and food available for people visiting Dishui Lake and willing to have a lot of fun this weekend.
Lingang New Area has a extension of 5.6km, mostly characterized for commercial buildings or research facilities. Nevertheless, this festival target to increase tourism, showing the public the beautiful coastal area so near from Shanghai downtown and all the fun activities you can do here.
Dishui is the largest artificial lake in China. It’s diameter of 2.5km forms a perfect circle. This festival goes from metro exit to bordering part of the Dishui lake. Tjere were not many people when I came, but seems the festival extended for few days.
And you get a very nice surprise! There were several vending machines for ice cream, fruits salads and cotton candy controles, so you get your order served by tiny cute robots!

Shanghai Coffee Festival quest 5
This weekend, Shanghai holds its famous World’s Coffee Cultural Festival in Jing’an district. Therefore, I decided to go on a quest to try different coffee shops and stands. This festival is only open for three days, although most of the stands are coffee shops you can visit afterwards.
KOI Thé is a worldwide franchise with few locations in Shanghai. This branch in Wujiang Rd is actually a small quite place to sit down after shopping. Specially if you fancy either a bubble tea, a cute and delicious dessert or simply an afternoon coffee.
This cute little shop gives you the option to buy blended coffee for home, brand products or Koi Plus original cold brew teas. As for me, I was delighted by the beautiful bear-shaped cupcakes (white and dark), rainbow 🌈 cake and matcha 🍵 mousse cakes. There was not many desserts options due to weekend afternoon crowds.
I do like the fact they had marked every cake 🍰 with baking and expiration date (2 days), with shows they care about quality and client service.

This weekend, Shanghai holds its famous World’s Coffee Cultural Festival in Jing’an district. Therefore, I decided to go on a quest to try different coffee shops and stands. Be aware this festival is only open for three days, although most of the stands are coffee shops you can visit afterwards.
This annual festival is a must visit this weekend. Due to pandemic, 2020 event was cancelled, therefore all efforts were focused on bring to life this fun event. For a hot summer day, having many ice coffee options and see so many great drinks was a life saver after. So many different coffee or coffee-flavored drinks available.
This first picture is from Paras, a very refreshing pineapple coconut ice black (quite like mixing espresso and a piña colada). Perfect sourness of the espresso and sweet coconut cream.
There are many shop presentations, demonstrations and games for all the family. I was surprised to find Central America’s produced coffee. However, unsure about the Costa Rican one (maybe my coffee farmer upbringing makes me additionally picky and bias).
Hope you have time to visit this weekend! The festival is open from 10am to 10pm. If not, don’t worry. I’ll definitely keep you informed for next year!

Nikko and ... it’s a big shop-cafe in Wujiang Rd. This is one of the places I find more curious, not only because this coffee shop sells vintage mugs, seeds and some coffee-related products, but also cactus 🌵 (yes, live plants) and clothes. All imported from Japan, and India.

This weekend, Shanghai holds its famous World’s Coffee Cultural Festival in Jing’an district. Therefore, I decided to go on a quest to try different coffee shops and stands. This festival is only open for three days, although most of the stands are coffee shops you can visit afterwards.
Bon Matín (Good Morning) bakery is a super cute French shop in Wujiang Rd that you must visit. Pastry is absolutely adorable, children get crazy with the chocolate bear cupcakes 🧁 🐻, I got crazy with the delicious garlic bread baguette. Definitely a place to visit if you want a quick dessert or you want to make someone happy (this includes yourself 😉).
This bakery is mainly take out, but rest calm you won’t regret it. Personally, I adore those coffee shops/bakeries were you walk in front of it and get seduce by it’s smell, so you are forced to go inside. Even more if I realize they have baguettes (my favorite type of bread).

Tongji House cafe
Within Tongji University there’s a great coffee shop you must visit. This adorable campus shop gives you the option to work or read with soft music, homey ambience and nice coffee. Tongji House is also a gift shop for Tongji University souvenirs.
This place is mostly frequented by students or alumni, to held study meetings or hang out. For the few in-campus options to get coffee, Tongji House it’s by far the best location. Additionally, Tongji House is said to give a proportion of its earnings for university/alumni’s outreach and inreach projects.

Where 5 malls get together
Wujiaochang is one of the best shopping locations in Shanghai, likes its name presents “Pentagon plaza”. This location connects five big mall complexes, over and underground. You can find almost everything you can imagine in this area, from clothing to makeup, groceries or furniture. You can find very traditional shops, foreign products and state-of-the-art technology.
Wujiaochang is a shopping hub, that can be perceived at the distance due to its buildings’ light artwork. Every day, crowds can be observed doing shopping or just walking around, some even consider the visit to this complexes as a weekend trip.
Few minutes from this area you can find the Daxue Road (University Rd), which has many shops, bars and restaurants with good prices. This area is particularly beautiful at night, so much to see and enjoy around.
Quite interesting is how this area got so much attention in the last years that Line 10 was finally extended.

Event: CESS 06 -2021
The 6th Conference on Earth System Sciences is held in Fuyue Hotel, Shanghai this July 7-10, 2021. This conference is organized by Tongji University, and brings together over 1,500 geoscientists. Although it’s main language is Chinese, organizers won’t limit international participants to join.
Considering pandemic, this is my first participation in this conference to present my work. During the conference, 10 ballrooms divided in two floors (2F & 3F), simultaneously available for continuous presentations. All rooms are extremely crowded (fortunately, Shanghai has no earthquake risk).
Additionally, in third floor there are a display of scientific magazines, scientific brands reaching to universities and laboratories, and the Posters Hall. Posters (in English and Chinese) are hold during the morning, and display in the afternoon. During the night are taken down, and next day new posters become available.
Hotel also counts with a huge restaurant area in 1sr floor, buffet style, open for all participants for lunch. Most participants will stay in the hotel during the Conference. This conference is held every year, and is amazing the amount of knowledge and research you learn in just a few days.
