Folkestone: A Seaside Town Full of History, Charm & Festive Magic
Last weekend, I had the chance to explore Folkestone, a coastal gem in Kent, England. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and unique dining experiences, it left a lasting impression on me. Here's why you should visit:
Step into History at the Memorial
The Step Short Memorial Arch stands proudly overlooking the sea, commemorating the soldiers who embarked from Folkestone during World War I. Walking through this tribute and along the Memorial Walk was a deeply moving experience, offering a peaceful space to reflect on the town’s historical significance.
Harbour Highlights & Unique Dining
The Harbour Arm is a lively stretch brimming with energy. I enjoyed a delicious lunch in a beautifully restored old train carriage, which offered a quirky yet cozy dining experience. Fresh seafood, friendly service, and the sound of the waves made it unforgettable. Afterward, I wandered through the harbour, sampling various local treats from artisan stalls while soaking in the seaside views.
Festive Cheer at the Christmas Market
During the holiday season, Folkestone transforms into a festive wonderland. The Christmas Market was buzzing with joy, filled with twinkling lights, seasonal snacks, and handcrafted gifts. The highlight for me? The outdoor cinema playing holiday classics under the stars. Watching a movie while sipping hot chocolate and wrapped in a cozy blanket felt like pure magic.
Cocktail Bliss in the Old Town
No trip would be complete without a visit to Folkestone’s Old Town, where I found some fantastic cocktail spots. The charming cobbled streets, lined with eclectic bars, offered a relaxed yet vibrant evening scene. Each sip felt like the perfect end to a day full of exploration.
Why You Should Go
Folkestone offers a unique blend of history, coastal charm, and festive fun. Whether you're here for the harbour vibes, historical landmarks, or delicious dining experiences, it’s a destination that will capture your heart. If you're planning a trip to the UK, make sure Folkestone is on your list—you won’t regret it! #uk #folkestone #kentcoast #daytrips
Dutch Fishing Vilage
Volendam is a quaint and charming fishing village set by lake Ijesse. It makes for a wonderful daytrip from Amsterdam. In my case though, I arrived from Utrecht, passing by Amsterdam on the way. Almost or under an hour of comfortable journey. My plan was to explore this picturesque village along with marken during the second half.
First impressions were that of a lively place. There were lots of people around, the weather was good. I have to say it is a bit touristy but there's still fun to it. There are lots of shops and cafe like restaurants. It is worth trying seafood here. The harbour was full of all manner of ships and had several very old wooden sailed ships.
There are ferries that take you to Marken. Lake ijessen is lovely. I saw a beach as well. But it seemed small in comparison to the number of daytrippers that had arrived. All in all it was still worth strolling around. It's good to know what you are getting into. That way things don't disappoint.

A blend of History with Modern
#myhiddengems
Originally, Delft was part of my itinerary as a day trip from Amsterdam. It takes less than an hour by train. But you know how Amsterdam can be. So after I finally managed to get out fo Amsterdam and see more. One of those days I was in Hague and looking for day trip ideas. Turns out Delft was even closer. I think I took a tram ride and barely within 30 mins or even less I reached the Delft station. On the way back i took the NS train and it took only 10 minutes.
The weather was nice and as expected Delft is a small city. The sight of canals will continue to welcome you. I had an early start and didn't have breakfast in Hague because part of my plans was to have a Stads-Koffyhuis Dutch breakfast with a coffee.
Alternately you could also get a pastry and coffee at the Uit de Dunst gallery. I headed straight to the historic town. There was an old church before but I decided to skip. After two hours of walking aroune the historic town. It isnt very big. I stopped for lunch. Then explored the market, visited Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. Evening was nicely spent exploring the Beestenmarkt. Then i went for local dinner and finally back to the station for train to Hague.

One of the best day trips
If you are in Venice and interested in day trips. You want to consider Burano! It sits approximately 7km from the main island of Venice and can be reached by local water taxi or vaporetti. Like Venice, Burano’s narrow streets and canals are the main thoroughfare, only hers are smaller and quainter than that of her big sister counterpart.
The more imposing, old world structures of Venice are replaced in Burano by rows of petite, flat-faced houses that might be all but indistinguishable from one another, were it not for their fantastically colorful facades.
You can also combine stops to nearby Murano or Torcello, if you have the time. An early start would be nice as Burano is about a 40 min ride from Venice. Plenty of historical sights like San Martino church and Merletti lace museum. But just roaming around town with a colorful theme is very fun.

Paradise on the southern coast
#myhiddengems
If you happen to be in Marseilles and looking for a fantastic day trip. This turquoise water gem, Cassis would make for a perfect choice. Actually given what it offers and what it costs, I would even recommend a stay here. Amongst my favourite destinations in the south of France. This decently priced coastal town with its season side charms and visuals, has even been called the poor man's st. tropez.
A drive from Marseilles would typically take you about 40 minutes or if you are on your own. I took a train from Marseille that didn't cost much and only took about 20-25 minutes. I had met a family here that came straight from the airport by taxi. I think that's a great idea too and might set you back by 100 bucks or so but very convenient.
Cassis, besides it own sights is also located nearby some places of tourist interest. I was lucky that it was lavender season and so visited the neighbouring town of Aix en Provence. There is the option of La ciotat as well. In terms of local sights and transport. There is the usual set of churches, vineyards dn castles worthy of a visit. I comfortably did that with public buses. The food was a delight as with most of France. All in all, such a satisfying stay in all fronts.

A charming village trip

Samobor made for a nice day trip during my stay in Zagreb. Croatia is starting to become a staple of my European holidays. And I've come to realise that all these lovely day trips and small cities with an old town might have something to do with it.
Samobor deserves more credit than it is given. For a small place with cobblestone streets, lovely food and historic ruins. I shared a rented car with another friend of mine so it took us barely half an hour to get here from Zagreb. There are also buses to do so. Oh and no parking issues, something that always worries me about new places and renting a car.
Now about things we managed to do or places to see included Wande king tomislav square, the church of St. Anastasia, old wooden bridge, a hike to the sombor castle ruins and the sombor museum. This felt just about enough and suited our pace. Although there might be some more local attractions worth seeing. Lastly, the town's famous somobor cream cake is worth trying. Then again all cakes are worth trying!!#myhiddengems #summerdestinations #sombor #croatia #daytrips #100waysoftravel #cherryblossom2024 #somobor
A lovely day trip from Budapest
#myhiddengems
Miskolc is a small town which fits perfectly the idea of a day trip. While I did feel that another time when I return here, I might stay overnight. It's got a nice vibe. My trip was during Spring, so the weather was good. Generally, the warmer weather is nice for a walk around and enjoy the surrounding areas. During the summer time, one can also enjoy the waterpark found towards the southern part of the city near the thermal baths.
Now I terms of local attractions. You can start with the blue and brown wooden church which is located next to the cemetery. The church gives a Translyvanian feel through its architecture. Moving on I made a stop at the lovers bridge. It is a cute little bridge with lots of locks by couples securing the duration of their love. The locks are mounted, one on top of another. This is in the center of town and won’t take much time to see.
Next up and a highlight or the trip were the cave baths. The cave baths in my opinion are the star of Miskolc and a must visit if you find yourself in the area or passing by. It doesn’t matter if you visit during the summer or winter as there is an indoor and outdoor portion. The caves part is inside so you can visit it all year round. #myhiddengems #100waysoftravel #hungary #miskolc #summerdestination #daytrips #cherryblossom2024
Dayton - Airforce Museum
Dayton Airforce museum is big and have many great things to see and experience. Big planes from World war to Vietnam war and few recent Planes as well are available in museum. There are free guided tours available which starts from 9:30 and cover various sections in the museum. Tour instructors are veterans and have good experience and knowledge of the planes and history. Its good to visit when around Columbus/Dayton. There is also a plane of US president and few old planes used by VIPs. Nice experience overall. #Airforce #museum #visitusa #travelinspiration #tripmoments #travelphotographer #daytrips
French Village in Malaysia
This is Colmar Tropicale a French Village in Bukit Tinggi Malaysia. It’s up in a hill and a very lovely picturesque place. There were some renovations for upgrades going. Weather is awesome here. Breezy and chill. My go to place when I need some time on my own. They charge an entrance fee of RM14 per adult and children up to 12 yo RM7.00. A little winding road but fun. Food wise - anything and everything is available from breakfast to super. On Saturdays there’s a night market too and some live shows, if I’m not mistaken. A must visit place if you’ve never been here. It’s only a 15-20 mins drive from the foothill. Enjoy!!! #CelebrateWithTrip #bukittinggi #colmartropicale #malaysia #daytrips
Chill with clear water and beach, Pangkor
#bucketlistreboot #beachesandclearwaters #chill #islandhopping #daytrips #nearipoh
If you are near Ipoh and am trying to find a place to take you away from the feel like city life, consider a day trip to Pangkor island.
In here, you will find affordable shopping for snacks, food stalls so food is not a worry and also water sports for those that love such things.
Ferries are at a thirty minutes frequency so do plan ahead of time to save time and also, ensure you catch the last ferry out of the island at 530pm unless you plan to stay there. As it is a crowded place as more places open up, would suggest that you get the return trip fast.

TheTravelingSuitcase (@thetravelingsuitcasee) LET’S GO TO JINSHAN CITY BEACH 🏖 : SHANGHAI
📍Jinshan City Beach, one of the few beaches within the east China metropolis, is a man-made beach and popular recreation area.
📍Jinshan City Beach is located in Jinshan District of Shanghai, located in the southwest of Shanghai and the North Bank of Hangzhou Bay. It is about 2 kilometers long.
📍I did a day trip to Jinshan city beach in spring April , 2021 . I took a bus for two hours which I had no problem because I’m all about adventures 😁.
📍 It was very windy on the beach because it was spring season . There were many people as well . i had a picnic, chill on the sand and listened to music . I’ll definitely go back around summer for a a swim .

Day trip to Sasaguri
#familytrip #countryside #Sasaguri #Ramen #nicefood #daytrips #Fukauko #Shopping #Train
Amazing family day trip to Sasaguri in mid December 23, 30 mins away from Hakata via JR train. We took the train from Hakata to Sasaguri in early morning, very pleasant experience, nice weather on the day and very few tourists in the area. We then take the car to the buddhist temple and had a nice stroll around for half a day in slow pace. At the lunch time, we went to a ramen restaurant, offered very nice food at affordable price. It was one of the best meals among very nice Hakata ramen restaurants. At the late afternoon, we went to Costco to seek what Costco offers in rural Japan, you will not regret it.
Cappuccino, croissant & company at Doña’s
Doña Bakehouse is an aesthetic cafe just 10 minutes walk from JB City Square. Surprisingly they have not made it big in the maps! Full address is at 14, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru 📍
My party of 3 were that lazy to walk after our lunch at JB City Square and we just wanted to have some coffee and desserts. RM6 for a short Grab ride and lucky for us as the skies started to pour as we got on the car!
❗️Advisory ❗️BE THERE EARLY 😭 As they bake in batches and who would have known ours was the last batch when we got there. The aroma of freshly baked croissant just lingers the moment you pull the door.
Got ourselves coffee, a slice of sourdough, Earl Grey Lemon swirl, Almond Croissant, Pain au Chocolate and this seductive-looking Classic Pain Suisse.
Don’t worry about butchering the pronunciation, as they have a visual guide menu with a photo of each pastry they offer! Price wise it’s almost the same as our cafes in Singapore but we let the ambience speak for itself!
A friendly host greets you at the entrance and they’ll assign a table for you! 2 floors for dine-in but we’re glad to be at the ground floor cause the mirror just brings lots of light and classiness. None of us have been to France, but at this moment we’re just ✨ manifesting ✨ #cafe #daytrips #pommamamz
