Winter Adventures in Salzburg, Austria!
This winter, I made a special trip to one of Austria's most popular cities, Salzburg! This town boasts an old town area, historical buildings (like Mirabell Palace), and natural scenery. The city is incredibly beautiful, with small buildings that complement the mountainous backdrop perfectly! As winter arrives, you can see the Alps in Salzburg with some snow already accumulating. Walking slowly along the river, you can also see many locks hanging on the bridge, adding a romantic touch to the whole city!
Additionally, Mirabell Palace is one of Salzburg's famous landmarks. When you visit, you must see this Baroque-style building. Fun fact: it was also a filming location for 'The Sound of Music.' There's a large fountain in the middle, and two statues stand by the entrance. It's recommended to spend about an hour exploring here!
Winter Journey: Volga Manor in Harbin and Russian Matryoshka Doll Experience
When winter arrives❄️, it's time to visit a place that's really cold. Harbin is the perfect destination for a winter trip. In winter, Harbin is covered in snow. I visited the Volga Manor located by the Ashi River. This place spans over 600,000 square meters and blends Harbin's history with Russian culture.
Walking into the manor, it's a world of white. The Russian-style buildings look particularly charming in the snow. Each building in the manor exudes a strong Russian flavor, making me feel like I'm in a foreign country.
The highlight of my visit was painting Russian Matryoshka dolls. Under the guidance of an instructor, I learned how to paint on wooden Matryoshka dolls. From the initial base color to the intricate patterns, every step was filled with creativity and fun.

Excellent Cinnamon Rolls in Stockholm
Stepping into winter, Stockholm becomes very cold, so we often prefer to stay indoors 😆 Fortunately, Stockholm has many excellent bakeries, and one of them is Valhallabageriet 😌
Their cinnamon rolls and cardamom rolls are considered some of the best by the locals, and they are very popular! A friend took us to Valhallabageriet to try them, and the cinnamon rolls had a rich cinnamon flavor, a soft texture, and were sweet but not overly so! The cardamom rolls had a delicate and refreshing aroma and were also very delicious! Around 3 PM, Valhallabageriet is always crowded because it's the Swedish fika time, perfect for sipping a hot coffee, taking a bite of bread, chatting with friends, and enjoying life!
PS. The coffee shop is decorated with many Swedish Christmas decorations, creating a great atmosphere!

The dates for the 2025 Shirakawa-go Light-Up event have been announced!
Shirakawa-go is a mountain village located in Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, known for its unique gassho-zukuri architecture. Surrounded by steep mountains, the village is situated along the Shogawa River basin, forming several settlements. The gassho-zukuri houses are characterized by their thatched, triangular roofs designed to prevent snow accumulation, making them well-suited to the heavy snowfall in the region. Shirakawa-go was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, becoming an internationally renowned tourist destination.
The history of Shirakawa-go dates back to the early 13th century, believed to have been established by the Taira clan after their defeat in the Genpei War. The gassho-zukuri houses are a unique form of Japanese folk architecture, with roofs shaped like hands in prayer, hence the name "gassho-zukuri." These structures are built without nails, relying solely on wood and rope, yet they are incredibly sturdy. The steep roof design allows snow to slide off easily, preventing the roof from collapsing under heavy snowfall. The spacious attics under the roofs were traditionally used for sericulture. The gassho-zukuri houses in Shirakawa-go are well-preserved, and some are still inhabited, showcasing traditional Japanese rural life.
Shirakawa-go is most beautiful in winter when the entire village is covered in snow, creating a fairy-tale-like scene. Unfortunately, when I visited in early January, there was no snowfall, but just two days later, the village was blanketed in white, as seen in other people's photos. Every winter, Shirakawa-go holds a light-up event, illuminating the village and creating a magical atmosphere. The dates for the 2025 light-up event are January 13, January 19, January 26, and February 2, with the lights on from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. During this period, the village looks spectacularly beautiful against the snowy backdrop.
Since Shirakawa-go is located deep in the mountains, there are no direct train services. The most convenient way to get there is by express bus. You can take the Shinkansen or limited express train to Kanazawa, Takaoka, Toyama, or Takayama from Tokyo, Osaka, or Nagoya, and then transfer to an express bus to Shirakawa-go. The bus ride from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes, and from Nagoya, it takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Driving is also an option, but be cautious of icy roads in winter.
