Time Travel Through The History Of Technology In New Zealand
The MOTAT in Auckland is split across two sites, one for aviation and then this one for transport and technology. Set across various buildings it has everything from musical instruments, cars, trolley buses and one of the first water pumping systems in New Zealand.
It’s a really interesting range of exhibitions and there really is something for everyone, it’s even interesting seeing examples of the first iPhones - seeing how much we have developed in just the last few years. There are originally pac man machines, early communication devices and concepts for low carbon technology.
For me the most interesting part was the trolley buses and trams, they’re in immaculate condition and there’s a nice range of models in the sheds. Quite a few of them are in working condition and operate the short tram link to the aviation hall. Auckland used to be lined with tram routes back in the day and there’s a lot of information on this golden age of tram travel
In some of the more interactive area such as the music hall there are staff in hand to help you better understand the exhibitions themselves.
Entrance is around $19NZ / £8.50 and includes a free team ride to the other campus of the museum, the MOTAT aviation hall. However you have to pay a separate entrance fee when you reach the aviation hall ( it’s worth it, see my previous post)

Ember of Adventure: Tongariro Alpine Crossing
#newzealandtrip
I tackled the legendary Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and it was an unforgettable odyssey! This 19.4km trek wound through a surreal landscape of volcanic peaks, emerald lakes, and rusty red terrain. The challenging climb was rewarded with breathtaking views of Mt. Ngauruhoe (aka Mt. Doom) and the surrounding wilderness. The ever-changing scenery, from alpine meadows to rocky ridges, kept me enthralled. This hike is a must-do for adventure-seekers and Lord of the Rings fans alike!

Lake Taupō, large crater lake in New Zealand 🇳🇿
#newzealandtrip
Lake Taupō is a large crater lake in New Zealand's North Island, located in the caldera of Taupō Volcano. The lake is the namesake of the town of Taupō, which sits on a bay in the lake's northeastern shore.
As New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake, it is the crown jewel of the region. Formed by a colossal volcanic eruption nearly 27,000 years ago, the lake is a natural wonder, rich with history and beauty.
The lake is perfect for sailing, kayaking, swimming, or casting a line for world-famous trout. Explore bubbling geothermal wonders, wander through lush trails, or take on epic mountain bike rides with views that will leave you breathless. For those who prefer to stay on land, the scenic lakeside trails offer breathtaking views and a chance to reconnect with nature.

Scorching Bay Beach
#newzealandtrip Scorcing Bay Beach is one of the best beaches around Wellington City. It has a nice enclosed swimming area, which is patrolled during the summer months and very good public facilities. Great family-friendly beach. Plenty of lovely soft sand and gentle shallow water. Clean public toilets, fresh water shower and playground. Cafe immediately over the road. Highly recommend!
The West Coast Tree Top - Zipline South Island
#newzealandtrip Fantastic walk through the forest 20m up! Just us and the birds, and beautiful scenery all around. This is well worth visiting and gives you a magical experience of being high up in the tree tops. To the beginning of the treetop walk from the entrance and around the wonderfully constructed metal loop. Highly recommend! Please do read the notes as you go around the walkway, it really adds to the experience.
The Hokitika Gorge
#newzealandtrip Lovely walk through a rainforest type environment, well maintained and offering some amazing views. The river is just to beautiful. The water is so blue and the landscape here is amazing. The bridge was fun to cross and offered amazing views of the gorge. There are so many viewing options and the trail was well kept.
Car parking and toilets were available and this was worth the 27km deviation from the main west coast route.

The Snout in NZ
#newzealandtrip Absolutely stunning! Magnificent scenery.
The view from the tip of the snout was worth the time and energy. You can walk 50 minutes to the Snout lookout and can stop there and turnaround. Trail is well-marked and in good shape. Just make sure to take a little extra water. The road to the car-park was temporarily closed. I parked at Endeavour Park. You can go around the gate on foot or bicycle. There are several trails that intersect/parallel this one and accommodate bicycles as well as foot traffic. It is not wheel-chair friendly. Overall, it’s all worth it!
Wharariki Beach
#newzealandtrip A nice beach with a 20 minute walk from the car park through rolling green hills to the beach. We were there for sunset and it was beautiful with the rocks silhouetted by the setting sun. Good to go there when tide is lower so you can get into the cave from which the windows photo is taken. Also nice sand dunes and can spot some seals. Highly recommended😊
Puponga hilltop walk - Farewell Spit & Puponga Farm Park
#newzealandtrip The 6.5-hour trip by four-wheel-drive bus is well worth it. The detailed instructions along the way, the scenery is amazing, and you can see migratory birds and sea lions at close range. Impressively, if you walk all the way to the Green Hills, including Wharariki Beach at low tide, you have a great experience of the impressive beauty of this area. In short, if you come here, it is recommended to participate.
Pillar Point Light Beacon Station
#newzealandtrip Pillar point is an historic light house along the Puponga Farm path track. 1.3km walk uphill from the small carpark up to the navigation station. Hilltop walk meets the track. Accessible from the Wharariki beach road or along the top from Cape Farewell or Farewell Spit. Great views from the top towards Farewell Spit or south to Cape Farewell and Wharariki beach.
The landmark for NZ geography!
#newzealandtrip An amazing stop over whilst doing the tour out to the end of the Spit this is the Northern most point on the South Island. Seeing millions of years old fossils watch a great experience as well. The Tour guide was incredible his knowledge and talk during the entire tour was so informative with historical but especially geographical expertise, it had everyone on the bus attentive for the entire six hour tour.

Mount Maunganui is an absolute highlight of Tauranga. The hike to the summit offers breathtaking views of the ocean, beaches, and the surrounding town. Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park is a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The park offers a range of trails, from short walks to challenging full-day hikes. I loved the Wairere Falls track, which led to breathtaking views of the falls and surrounding countryside. The forest is lush and full of birdlife, creating a truly immersive experience. There’s also a lot of history to discover, with old mining relics hidden among the trails. The park is well-maintained, and the signage is clear, making it easy to explore. Car lot was full but enough in overflow. Great to see sheep and lambs. Took my partner and I five hours return. That includes stop throughout to see the views & sheep, 20 minute stop at the view point and 20 minutes at the top for lunch. Would recommend going in the morning when the wind is at its lowest. Would recommend for sure.overall this place is awesome
Addington Coffee Co-op
#newzealandtrip
Really big space. Best french toast l've ever had and I've had heaps. The high didn't last for long as the lamb sausage roll was extremely dry and hard.
Couldn't cut through it and biting it was leathery.
Drinks were all fine and at the right temperature.
Service and atmosphere were just fine, it's quite dark. Lots of other chch cates I'll be heading to next time before returning here.
