#Snow Travel Shirakawa-go
A dream place for many people with the image of an ancient village with white snow falling like in a fairy tale in Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture, Chubu Region. It is a village that was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The highlight here is the Gassho-style houses that look like hands clasped together, which have been preserved in their original form to the present day.
We recommend going up to see Shirakawa-go village from the top view at the Shiroyama Viewpoint. You can walk up or take the Shuttle bus.
🚍 There are 2 ways to get there: public bus and self-driving rental car. If you don't rent a car, you can use Nohi Bus, which has the following routes:
From Takayama, it takes about 50 minutes.
From Kanazawa, it takes about 1.15 hours.

A Springtime Escape to Shirakawago
I recently had the opportunity to visit Shirakawago on a day trip from Takayama, and it was a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Shirakawago is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri houses, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Here are some highlights from my trip:
The Gassho-zukuri Houses: These unique houses are made of thatched roofs and steep wooden walls. They are truly a sight to behold, especially in the springtime when the surrounding cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
The Shirakawago Observatory: This observatory offers stunning panoramic views of the village and the surrounding mountains. It's a great place to take photos and enjoy the scenery.
The Shirakawago Folk Village: This open-air museum showcases traditional crafts and exhibits related to the history of the village.
Tips for visiting Shirakawago:
Book your bus tickets in advance: Shirakawago is a popular tourist destination, so it's important to book your bus tickets in advance to ensure you get a seat.
Dress comfortably: The weather in Shirakawago can be unpredictable, so be sure to pack layers.
Consider visiting during the off-peak season: While Shirakawago is beautiful in the spring, it can get crowded. If you're looking for a more peaceful experience, consider visiting during the off-peak season.
Overall, my day trip to Shirakawago was a wonderful experience. The village is a peaceful and charming place, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Takayama region.

Shirakawa-go - Quaint, UNESCO Heritage site
A beautiful UNESCO Heritage site preserved for it's gassho-zukuri style houses built to withstand heavy snow and earthquakes.
It'd have been even more beautiful in winter (and freezing too!).
I only planned enough time to try some street food, but it was still a very enjoyable and relaxing day-trip for me.
Hida beef is a must-try if you have no food restrictions. It is less oily and I prefer this to the famous A5-wagyu.
I made bookings for direct bus through and fro Kanazawa station and Shirakawa-go Ogimachi (bus station) that took about 1.5 hours, Y2600 one-way.
Unless you wish to stay overnight for the experience, a day-trip is sufficient to walk around (2 to 3 hours to cover the entire village), visit some paid exhibitions to learn about the way of life of the people in the past, and trying some street food or local-style cuisine at some eateries.
You can learn a lot from the paid exhibitions as they display the items with illustrations that show how they were worn or used.
Featured Places:
(1) Observation deck for panoramic view of the town - 20 min. hike up a road.
(2) Kanda and Wada houses (paid exhibitions) - learn about the people's way of life in the past, how tools and clothing were used
(3) Myozenji temple
Featured Street Food:
(1) Hida beef (2-way) and Pork Sushi - freshly prepared and to be consumed immediately
(2) Hida beef and pork tongue skewer
(3) Hida beef bun - offered by multiple stores throughout the town

ShirakawaGO
Shirakawago, located in Japan's Gifu Prefecture, is renowned for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are over 250 years old. The village, along with Gokayama in neighboring Toyama Prefecture, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Gassho-zukuri, meaning "constructed like hands in prayer," refers to the steeply thatched roofs of the houses, designed to withstand heavy snowfall.
The village's remote location in the Shogawa River Valley contributed to its unique architectural style and preserved cultural heritage. The houses' roofs are constructed without nails and are instead supported by an intricate wooden framework, enabling them to endure the harsh winters. These roofs are also designed to provide space for silkworm cultivation, which was a primary source of income for villagers.
Tourism plays a significant role in Shirakawago's economy today, attracting visitors year-round. The village is particularly enchanting in winter, when the snow-covered landscape and illuminated farmhouses create a picturesque scene. Seasonal events, such as the Doburoku Festival in October, celebrate local customs and traditions.
Shirakawago offers various accommodations, including staying overnight in one of the gassho-zukuri houses, providing an immersive cultural experience. Additionally, the Shirakawago Open-Air Museum offers insight into the region's history and architecture. With its breathtaking scenery and well-preserved heritage, Shirakawago provides a fascinating glimpse into Japan's rural past.#Shirakawago #unesco

Picture Perfect Trip to Shirakawago
Hey everyone! I had the most amazing trip to Shirakawago with my sister, and I can't wait to share all about it! We had been dreaming of visiting this charming village since 2020, but the pandemic threw a wrench in our plans. However, this year, we finally made it happen and crossed it off our bucket list!
To get the best view of the village, we hopped on a paid shuttle bus that took us to the top of a hill. And let me tell you, the view was absolutely breathtaking! There was a deck with a designated photo point, so we made sure to capture all the beauty.
After taking in the scenery, we were famished and decided to grab a bite at one of the local restaurants. We found this cozy little place that served homey food, and boy, were we in for a treat! The food was delicious, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable.
All in all, our trip to Shirakawago was worth the wait. It's a place that truly lives up to its reputation, and I'm so glad I got to experience it with my sister. Now, onto planning our next adventure!

Winter in Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go is a is a quaint little village in the Gifu Prefecture that looks like a scene straight out of a fairy tale! This UNESCO World Heritage site is well-known for gassho-zukuri, which are houses built with triangular thatched roofs resembling hands clasped in prayer. It is constructed at a steep angle to allow heavy snow to fall off easily in winter.
During winter, there is a light up event where several houses will be lit up in the evening. With the houses covered in a thick blanket of snow, this evening illumination scene is nothing short of magical. You can visit Shirakawa-go at any time of the year but I would personally recommend to visit in Dec-Mar as the winter snow makes the village even more stunning!

Shirakawa-go World Heritage Village ❄️
A famous place in Japan 🎌
We traveled by renting a car with a driver from Osaka.
(There were 9 of us. After calculating, this method is a very good choice because it takes quite a while to move around and stop here and there with all 9 of us in the car 😂)
It took about 5 hours from Osaka.
On the way, there was snow on both sides of the road and beautiful mountain views along the way. Plus, it was snowing. It was so awesome!
It was almost 4 pm when we arrived at the village. It was such a shame that we only had an hour to walk around. But our luck was that there was a snowstorm 2 days before our arrival. But on the day we went, the storm had passed and there was only fluffy, soft snow that was so beautiful and juicy. Every angle we took pictures of was great. 😁
The highlight here is the 3 houses. Anyone who comes here must come to this point. The coordinates are: walk across the village bridge and go straight until you reach an intersection. Turn right and keep walking. The 3 houses will be on your right. Notice the many people standing and taking pictures.
