Beautiful views
I just love how most places in toba, whether cheap or expensive offer such great views or the lake. The restaurant offers a stunning view of lakeside Toba, making it a beautiful spot to enjoy a meal. But what truly surprised me was the food and service—both were absolutely top-notch. Food is very interesting and incorporates local Batak flavours. We tried their signatures - Iga Sapi Panggang with authentic Batak recipes and it was amazing! The spice, the taste, the meat, everything is perfect. Overall, it's a stunning spot for lounging and any meal of the day. The vibe is so chill.

Shining summer time in North Sumatera
#summerdestinations
The journey of my summer holiday to one of the most visited destination in North Sumatera Province of Indonesia, that is Lake Toba.
On the way to every spot, you will be pampered with stunning views of rice field and lake which has clear and fresh water.
Every time I passed by a nice view, i feel i need to stop and enjoy a while by absorbing the vibes and breathe the fresh air for my next journey.
It was lovely to have this kind of experience in my life ,

🇮🇩 Hot Spring at Aek Rangat, Lake Toba
Aek Rangat is a well-known hot spring located on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Situated on the western shore of Samosir Island, Aek Rangat offers beautiful views of Lake Toba and the surrounding landscape. The hot springs at Aek Rangat are naturally heated by geothermal activity. The mineral-rich waters are believed to have therapeutic properties and provide a relaxing experience.
The larger bath house was not open during my visit. The guide brought me to a small restaurant next to it which had a tiny pool with hotspring water. Aek Rangat offers a natural and rustic experience so the facilities are basic. It would be good to bring your own supplies.

🇮🇩 Stay in Traditional Batak house in Hotel Tuk-Tuk Timbul by Lake Toba
During my visit to Samosir Island, I spent two nights in a traditional Batak house. Despite the lack of air conditioning, the nights were comfortably cool. I had expected many mosquitoes but was pleasantly surprised to find very few. Overall, it was a delightful stay.
Ambiance/Facilities:
The room offered basic amenities, without a TV or air conditioning.
Highlights:
The most striking feature was the magnificent view of Lake Toba right at my doorstep. I woke up early to catch the stunning sunrise, which was truly breathtaking.
Value:
The stay was budget-friendly, making it an excellent choice for travelers looking for an affordable option.
Rating: 4/5
One drawback was the absence of a kettle in the room. Instead, the hotel provided a thermos of hot water, which was available for a charge of 15k per bottle.

🇮🇩 Beaches on Samosir Island, Lake Toba
Samosir Island, located within Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is known for its stunning natural beauty, including several attractive beaches. I visited Sigurgur Beach and Parbaba Beach. Parbaba Beach, also known as Pasir Putih Parbaba, is one of the most popular beaches on Samosir Island, known for its white sand and clear waters. It's a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and various water sports. There are also facilities for renting boats and jet skis. Sigurgur Beach, also known as Pantai Sigurgur, js relatively quieter and less crowded. This makes it an excellent choice for visitors looking for a peaceful retreat.

🇮🇩 From Medan to Lake Toba by Bus
Taking public transport from Medan to Lake Toba may not be the most comfortable and convenient way but it is definitely doable. I took a local bus from Amplas bus terminal in Medan to Parapat. It was a 4 hours ride from Medan to Parapat through winding and narrow roads especially towards the end of the ride. As my hotel was located along the main road, I asked the bus driver to drop me off at my hotel but unfortunately he dropped me at the wrong hotel so I had to walk around 2 km to my hotel. Luckily a kind local gave me a ride on his motorbike.

🇮🇩 Parhallow Viewpoint overlooking Lake Toba, Samosir Island
We stopped by Parhallow Viewpoint and Coffee Shop for lunch during the tour around Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The viewpoint is about 7 km and 15 min drive from Tomok Ajibata Port. It is a scenic spot and coffee shop which offers breathtaking views of Lake Toba, one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 74,000 years ago. The restaurant serves simple local delicacies and a variety of beverages, including locally sourced coffee and tea. There was a coffee plant right next to our table which my guide pointed out to me.

🇮🇩 Lakes Within a Lake, Samosir Island
I got the opportunity to visit two lakes within a lake during my tour around Samosir Island. The concept of "lakes within a lake" refers to smaller lakes situated on islands that are themselves located within a larger lake. This unique geographical feature is present in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia, which contains two notable smaller lakes on Samosir Island: Lake Sidihoni and Lake Aek Natonang. Both lakes are surrounded by lush greenery and offer a tranquil and picturesque setting. The calm waters and natural surroundings provide a perfect spot for relaxation and photography.

🇮🇩 Bukit Burung, a hidden gem overlooking Lake Toba
I chanced upon Bukit Burung on Google map while researching for places I want my guide to bring me to on motorbike. It is located further up the hill about 15 minutes ride by motorcycle from the hot spring in Aek Rangat.
Apparently this lookout point is not very well-known among the local people. My guide asked a few locals along the way and no one has heard of Bukit Burung before. Eventually I brought my guide who was born and bred in Samosir to a place that he has never been to!
If I remember correctly there is no signboard at the junction leading to the lookout point so it's quite easy to miss it. From the junction we followed the rough stony path till the end and we were awarded with a beautiful view of Samosir Island and a small inhabited island called Pulau Tulas in Lake Toba.

🇮🇩 Ancient Batak Village on Samosir Island
Huta Siallagan is a historic and cultural village located in Ambarita, on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia. In the Batak language, Huta Siallagan means the Village of Siallagan Clan. The village was founded by King Siallagan hundreds of years ago. It is renowned for its traditional Batak Toba architecture and its historical significance to the Batak people. The village is famous for its ancient stone chairs and tables used by the Batak kings and for its role as a site of traditional justice and execution.
There are a number of traditional Bolon and Sopo houses which are traditional houses of the Batak people. At the center of Huta Siallagan you can see two sets of large stones carved into chairs encircling a stone table. These stone furniture artifacts are called Batu Parsidangan, meaning “Stones for Meetings and Trials”.

🇮🇩 Stroll around Tuk-Tuk, Samosir

Some of the hotels facing Lake Toba had private beach and nice views of the lake.
I bought some souvenirs at few of the souvenir shops in Tuk-Tuk. Many shops sell wooden sculptures of batak houses. Do get some

🇮🇩 Ferry Rides between Parapat and Samosir, Lake Toba
There are a few ferry terminals in Parapat offering ferry services to different locations in Samosir Island. The hotel staff dropped me off at the newly built Pelabuhan Ajibata. The new ferry terminal seemed to offer higher-end ferry services to tourists and I was told that there was no ferry available that day. The staff I approached at the new ferry terminal directed me to a small port next to it. That's the port where locals take local ferries to and fro Samosir.
And so I boarded the local ferry from Pelabuhan Ajibata to Tomok (Rp 12,000). The ferry runs regularly so there is no need to buy tickets in advance. The ferry conductor will collect ticket fees from the passengers one by one.
The ferry looked quite old and rundown but no complaints since the fare was so cheap. There was no air-conditioning too. There were also vendors selling snacks on the ferry.
I sat at the open deck to immerse myself in the beauty of Lake Toba and took lots of pictures! It's definitely an eye-opening experience for me. One should try to take the local ferry instead of the premium ferry for a truly local experience in Lake Toba regions!

🇮🇩 Stay in Parapat by Lake Toba
I spent one night at Gapura Hotel in Parapat, a small town in North Sumatra on the edge of Lake Toba, before taking a ferry to Samosir Island the following day. My hotel room was facing the lake and the view of Lake Toba was priceless.
The hotel is situated along the main road. The view of Lake Toba along the road was amazing! However the road conditions were bad. There was literally no space for pedestrians to walk. I felt quite unsafe walking on the road as I had to walk very close to the edge to avoid being run over by passing vehicles and constantly keep a look out for vehicles behind me. There were many stalls and small restaurants along the main road. Most of them offer a very nice view of Lake Toba and the prices were cheap.

Batu Passa comes from the word Passa Passa in the Batak language which means a place for farmers in the middle of a rice field to repel birds that eat rice. It is located on the shores of Lake Toba, Sangkal Village, Simanindo District, Samosir Regency.
There is an iconic tree that grows very near to the water surrounded by big rocks. The rocks in this place make it one of the exotic places in Samosir Regency.
It's definitely an insta worthy place! This place is not crowded and completely free to visit. You can park close to the shore at the empty space available. Many people stop here for pictures and you can even have picnics here.

Lake Toba Samosir Island, a tranquil haven
I planned a last minute solo trip Lake Toba after I decided to call off the trip the Cambodia due to the current situation. I chose to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Medan as the flight ticket was the cheapest. Lake Toba caught my attention after a quick check on Google map. Isn't it the world's largest crater lake that I learned about in high school Geography?
Getting There -
Take the bus from Amplas bus terminal to Parapat. (Rp 60,000) Then take a ferry to Samosir Island from one of the few ferry terminals in Parapat. I took the ferry from Pelabuhan Ajibata to Tomok (Rp 12,000)

Attractions -
Check out the last two pictures. I happened to pass by what seemed like a tourist information centre when I took a walk through Tuk-Tuk area. The poster shows quite a lot of attractions in Lake Samosir and the neighbouring regions which I can't seem to find much information on Google. I picked a few attractions and toured around half the island on a motorbike. It's a pity that I can't ride a bike so I hired a local to take me on the bike tour for one day. (Rp500,000)
Attractions visited:
Huta Siallagan, Batu Kursi Raja Siallagan ( Stone Chair of King Siallagan )
Batu Passa and Liang Sipogu
Beaches which include Sigurgur, Parbaba Beach, Pasir Putih
Aek Rangat (supposed to have a hot spring but it was not open. The guide brought me to a small restaurant next to it which had a tiny pool with hotspring water)
Bukit Burung (It's a lookout point further up the hill from Aek Rangat which many locals not know about. Happened to chance upon it on Google map. Even my guide didn't know about it!! So it was quite an accomplishment to bring him to a place that he had never been!)

Hotels - Hotel Tuk-Tuk Timbul
Stayed two nights in a traditional room. No air-conditioning but Samosir is generally quite cool at night. Thought there would be lots of mosquitoes but luckily there were not. Overall it was a pleasant stay.
There were many hotels and homestay which seemed to be deserted. I guess the tourism in Samosir has not really fully recovered.

Scenic Ride Across Lake Toba
#outdooradventure
The ferry ride across Lake Toba is a scenic and relaxing way to experience the beauty of Indonesia's largest volcanic lake. The journey offers stunning views of the crystal-clear water and surrounding lush hills, creating a peaceful and picturesque atmosphere. Ferries typically connect the mainland to Samosir Island, with regular departures. While the ride itself is smooth and comfortable, the real highlight is the panoramic view of the lake and its islands, especially during sunrise or sunset. Whether you're traveling between destinations or simply enjoying the natural beauty, the ferry ride is a must-do experience for anyone visiting Lake Toba.
