The Power of Connection.

The MentorSHPE program facilitates one-to-one mentoring relationships that support personal and professional growth and development for those in the STEM fields. The program is designed to expand professional networks, allow participants to gain new knowledge and insights, and build new skills for both mentors and mentees.

Mentoring matches will work together to define their own expectations, determine goals and a corresponding action plan, and outline milestones to track progress. While the program offers guidance and a base template, mentors and mentees can tailor the content to meet their own needs.

Mentees select mentors based on alignment of goals, specific needs, or characteristics. 

MentorSHPE offers five different options for connections. Mentees and mentors can choose how they want to connect!

Mentoring Moment

Mentees looking for a one-time connection with a mentor. Maybe you have a work situation you’d like to talk through, perhaps you have a job offer and you want some guidance on negotiation skills, or you are looking to get more involved in leadership and need some guidance. This program offers mentors and mentees the opportunity to connect for a conversation that sometimes can develop into longer connections but is designed for a one-time connection.

Chapter Leader MentorSHPE

The Chapter Leader MentorSHPE track offers the opportunity for new leaders of SHPE chapters to receive experienced guidance as they navigate their new role. Mentees and mentors are paired in a virtual one-on-one three month long connection based on factors such as leader role, chapter size, goal areas for new chapter leaders and experience areas of mentors to support those mentee chapter goals. Participants are also encouraged to participate in cohort events to broaden their network beyond the one-on-one mentoring partner connection. 

Please note that at this time, we are only offering the program to chapter President and Vice President positions. Future expansion to other leader roles is being considered.

Professional MentorSHPE

This track provides SHPE professional members the opportunity to connect for professional and personal development. Content and resources are tailored for professional members only. Participants can connect with a peer at a similar career level or with someone more advanced in their career for a traditional mentoring connection. Connections start with a 3-month plan but can be tailored to be longer depending on participant needs.

Future GRADS MentorSHPE

The Future GRADS MentorSHPE Program facilitates one-to-one mentoring relationships that connect graduate school applicants with mentors to guide them through the application process. Mentees will receive guidance on the application process from those who have experienced the process themselves. Because there are a limited number of mentors for this program, mentees must apply to be considered to participate. This track is only offered in the fall semester.

Not sure if you have the time? Mentoring connections within the MentorSHPE program are designed to last three months. Current MentorSHPE Mentors report an average of 3-7 hours per month dedicated to the mentoring connection which includes virtual monthly meetings, messaging between meetings, and activities like reviewing resumes.

Not sure if you are experienced enough professionally? Mentors of all skill levels, professions, and life experience are needed. Mentees select mentors based on alignment of goals, specific needs, or characteristics. I guarantee there is a mentee that will benefit from your experience and advice!

Don’t have any experience as a mentor? The MentorSHPE program utilizes an online platform that provides tools like handbooks and worksheets created by SHPE to provide structure for first time mentors and to ensure that the mentoring relationships remain goal driven to provide the maximum benefit for both mentors and mentees.

Two Exciting Ways to Join MentorSHPE

The cornerstone MentorSHPE program is a three-month mentoring connection focusing on two to five goals. Mentoring matches will work together to define expectations, determine goals and a corresponding action plan, and outline milestones to track progress. Mentees can select mentors based on alignment of goals, specific needs, or characteristics.

Mentoring Moments provide focused opportunities for networking and learning experiences without the time commitment of a full mentoring connection. Mentoring Moments allow users to connect for a single meeting to discuss relevant, timely topics like leadership challenges, graduate school applications, or even preparing for an interview. This is a perfect opportunity for those with busy schedules that still want to give back to the Familia as a mentor by sharing their relevant experience when needed, or for mentees to take advantage of the Familia’s diverse knowledge network.

How are MentorSHPE connections created?

Our software platform considers multiple elements of the user profile in the matching algorithm. Most important in the match is the list of skills the mentee would like to explore and the list of experiences regarding those skills that a mentor can provide. The algorithm isn’t set to match mentors and mentees based on their particular STEM field. Some of the most meaningful connections have happened based on skills and experiences, not because mentors and mentees are in the exact same career path. As mentees look through the list of available mentors, they can look for mentors in particular fields but the system results for their strongest match will be based on skills and experiences.
