About us
The Geological Survey of Slovenia (Geološki zavod Slovenije - GeoZS) is a multidisciplinary public research institute that operates in various fields of geoscience and conducts basic research and applied activities in Slovenia and abroad, as well as public services in support of the operation of the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union. The GeoZS acquires, stores, interprets and makes available geological data required by the state and society. We are engaged in research on both national and international levels and cooperate with similar organisations in Slovenia and abroad. The GeoZS takes an active part in various EU programmes focused on sustainable living, climate action, as well as efficient and sustainable use of resources and raw materials. We work hard to provide universal accessibility and application of expert knowledge in the society and the economy, transfer research results into practical application, popularise science, spread scientific culture, and raise public awareness. The GeoZS aims for its name to become synonymous with the knowledge of everything that can be found beneath the Earth’s surface. While our top priority is research, we are also creating an environment that will allow efficient transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice, both in Slovenia and abroad. In the long run, three research programmes will continue to form the core of our research: Regional Geology, Groundwater & Geochemistry, and Mineral Resources.

🔋 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗼𝘀𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝘇𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗮 On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, GeoZS participated in the regional scientific conference "Geothermal Energy in the Energy Transition of Bosnia and Herzegovina" organized by the Technical Sciences and Natural and Mathematical Sciences Departments of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of BiH. The event took place in Sarajevo and brought together experts from various fields. Dr. Nina Rman presented publicly available information that supports the development of geothermal energy use in Slovenia and shared the results of the INRIGeoTeam project, which focuses on developing an innovative methodology for hydrogeological research to improve the success of reinjection wells. Dr. Simona Adrinek highlighted the development of shallow geothermal energy in Slovenia, emphasizing new technologies such as underground thermal energy storage with borehole heat exchangers (BTES) and the use of shallow geothermal energy for cooling storage facilities, both of which are being explored within the GeoCool FOOD project. Colleagues from the Croatian Geological Survey shared insights from extensive hydrogeological and geophysical research on three carbonate geothermal aquifers, while experts from BiH discussed technical and legislative challenges in this field. More than twenty participants agreed that continued international collaboration is crucial for accelerating development and knowledge transfer.

V sredo smo v sodelovanju z GeoZS - Geological Survey of Slovenia izvedli posvet "Potenciali zajema, uporabe, transporta in skladiščenja CO2 v Sloveniji". 💡Glavni zaključki posveta so: 1. Dolgoročna vizija naj bo usmerjena v krožno rabo CO2, torej predvsem v razvoj za uporabo zajetega CO2. Z vidika ekonomskih priložnosti za Slovenijo in za hard-to-abate sektorje je smiselno raziskati tudi možnosti vtiskovanja CO2 v podzemlje ob upoštevanju vseh vplivov na okolje. 2. Kot tranzitna država, mora Slovenija čimprej začeti razmišljati o načinih transporta zajetega CO2 ter o aktivnem sodelovanju s čezmejnimi državami. 3. Čimprej naj se oblikuje kontaktna točka za NZIA in CRM akt, ki bo podpirala hitrejše pridobivanje dovoljenj. 4. Potrebujemo ustrezne finančne in fiskalne mehanizme, ki bodo omogočili inovacije in investicije v nizkoogljične tehnologije. Ti so že predvideni v prenovljenem NEPNu. 5. V sodelovanju s stroko predlagamo, da se v letu 2025 začne priprava strategije za upravljanje z ogljikom. 6. Vlada RS naj si prizadeva za pridobitev tehnične pomoči pri izvajanju zgoraj navedenih predlogov. 7. V 2025 moramo nadaljevati s posveti v sodelovanju z državo, akademsko in raziskovalno stroko ter industrijo ter morebiti organizirati študijski obisk na lokacijo, kjer CO2 tehnologije že uporabljajo. As part of the project, 12 partners from six Alpine countries (Austria, France, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Switzerland) are developing a decision-support tool for the future development steps of these regions. GeoZS team will be focused on the Peca mountain range, which include the transboundary underground water body –the Peca karst aquifer, where Slovenia and Austria are considering the best options for joint management of water resources.
It’s a wrap on the Waterwise kickoff meeting! The 12 Waterwise partners met in Poschiavo, Switzerland, over the past three days. Discussions were held about the project activities, sharing ideas and good practices coming from 7 different countries. The project partners had the opportunity to better get to know each other and everyone’s role in the project over formal and informal discussions. The whole team was happy to join in a walk close to one of the project pilot sites and learn how to collect samples from water streams for future tests. Everyone was amazed by the beauty of the Cambrena glacier and its lake! Thank you to Université de Neuchâtel and Fondazione Edmund Mach who perfectly organized the kickoff meeting, and to Cassiano Luminati from Polo Poschiavo, Alexis TRUCHET from Interreg Alpine Space Joint Secretariat, Silvia Jost and Alexis Kessler, both from the Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development (Ufficio federale dello sviluppo territoriale ARE), for participating: their presentations gave plenty of ideas to the Waterwise team for future connections with other projects and institutions. V oktobru je bil izpeljan že 2. nacionalni dogodek projekta »𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗭𝗡𝗔𝗝 - 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶 𝘂𝘃𝗮𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗷𝘂 𝗻𝗮č𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗱𝗽𝗿𝘁𝗲 𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶 𝘃 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗷𝗶«, pri katerem kot del konzorcija sodeluje tudi GeoZS. 🤝 Rdeča nit dogodka so bili raziskovalni podatki in podatkovno skrbništvo. 🔍📋 🗣️ Zvrstili so se številni zanimivi govorci, s katerimi smo odpirali teme, kot so: ✔️ implementacija in monitoring odprte znanosti v raziskovalnih organizacijah, ✔️ učinki, ki jih odpiranje podatkov prinaša v javnem sektorju in gospodarstvu, ✔️ pravna vprašanja, povezana z odprtim dostopom do podatkov. 💬 »Slovenija je lani dosegla 15. mesto glede na vprašalnik Evropske komisije o pripravljenosti odpiranja podatkov. Po kazalniku OECD pa je zasedla 7. mesto. To si lahko štejemo za izjemen uspeh.« Mag.
