Walking Together for a World Where Everyone Has a Home From September 28 to October 3, 2024, 697 VKR employees across 32 countries took part in the “Donate Your Steps” challenge. Together, they logged an incredible 28.7 million steps–enough to walk halfway around the world. But this was more than just a fitness challenge. Every step was matched with a grant to Habitat for Humanity, supporting the Empty Spaces to Homes programme, which turns vacant buildings into safe, affordable homes for families in need. Yesterday, at the EU Citizen Energy Forum in Budapest, Gyuri Sumeghy represented our ComActivate project, sharing solutions to renovate owner-occupied multi-apartment buildings in Central and Eastern Europe. We highlighted the importance of one-stop-shops and targeted subsidies to support low-income households. This forum is a key step in shaping the upcoming Citizen Energy Package, fostering collaboration on sustainable energy and housing solutions. Our partners from MRI and LVOA also contributed as moderators, adding valuable insights. Every Home Tells a Story: Celebrating International Volunteer Day This International Volunteer Day, we honour the incredible volunteers who bring hope and transformation to communities worldwide. In 2024, Habitat for Humanity organised hundreds of volunteer activities, including three accelerated builds in Romania. Over 270 volunteers helped eight families move closer to their dream of a safe, stable home–a fresh start, a space to heal, and a place to grow. From single parents seeking safety for their children to families rebuilding their lives, these homes represent much more than shelter–they are the foundation for brighter futures. Building Dreams Together: Alaa and Lea’s Hope Build Experience in Romania Two months ago, Alaa and Lea from Habitat EME joined 150 volunteers for the Hope Build event in Berceni, Romania, organised by Habitat for Humanity România. Together, they constructed two duplex homes, offering four families the foundation for a brighter future. For Alaa, volunteering is about “giving without expecting anything in return,” while Lea reflected, “You’re not just building walls–you’re fulfilling dreams.” The week was filled with hard work, new skills, and powerful moments shared with families and a global team of volunteers.
