When we launched the Increasing Access to Secondary Education for Out-of-School Girls project in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and ChildFund Korea, we envisioned a future where girls not only have access to education but also learn in well-equipped classrooms with essential Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities. Today, we proudly handed over a three-classroom block at Services Secondary School and Fourah Bay College Secondary School, bringing the total number of schools constructed under this initiative to four. At Services Secondary School, Senior Secondary School Principal Georgiana Bangura described the occasion as historic, highlighting that for the first time in 20 years, the school now has uninterrupted access to safe and clean water. Victor Kamara, Country Director of ChildFund Sierra Leone, noted: “The WASH facilities are a deliberate step toward ensuring children have access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene practices, which are critical for their health and well-being. With these new facilities, we have significantly improved the health, sanitation, and dignity of the pupils and staff.” The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, emphasized the significance of collaboration, stating: “The construction and handover of these facilities is a testament to the power of partnership. It takes a village to raise a child, and today that village has extended beyond our borders.” He added that the facilities symbolize hope, particularly for out-of-school girls facing barriers to education. Jaeun Nam, Country Program Manager for ChildFund Korea, reiterated that “children, especially girls, are at the heart of this project.” #Education #radicalinclusion #girlchildeducation #watersanitationandhygiene

On #WorldDiabetesDay, a startling discovery in Sierra Leone: A random screening of 150 people revealed that 1 in 5 had elevated blood sugar levels and were previously unaware of it. "Only 8% of people with diabetes receive treatment," shared Dr. Santigue Sesay, Director of Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mustapha Kabba highlighted the gravity of the situation: "Diabetes ranks fourth among the illnesses affecting and killing Sierra Leoneans. Many remain undiagnosed and untreated." In response to this urgent need, MAP International and ChildFund International have provided $25M in critical diabetes medications to the Ministry of Health, ensuring facilities nationwide can support those affected. With ChildFund's support in distributing these supplies across all 16 districts, this partnership aims to improve diabetes care access across Sierra Leone. Building on years of impactful efforts, including COVID-19 support, MAP International and ChildFund continue to empower communities for healthier futures. Deputy Minister of Health Charles Senesie expressed his gratitude, saying, "We thank ChildFund and MAP International for this invaluable donation, which will significantly aid in addressing diabetes-related health challenges in the country." Isatu Venn, Programs and Sponsorship Director at ChildFund Sierra Leone, stated, "These supplies represent our commitment to supporting the government’s healthcare initiatives and highlight the strong partnership between ChildFund and the Ministry of Health. Together, we are dedicated to improving public health and ensuring the well-being of all Sierra Leoneans, especially children impacted by diabetes." #HealthcareForAll #GlobalHealth #MAPInternational #ChildFund #DiabetesAwareness #WorldDiabetesDay #WorldDiabetesDay2024 Chege Ngugi ChildFund International - Africa ChildFund Sénégal ChildFund Australia ChildFund Alliance ChildFund Uganda ChildFund The Gambia ChildFund Zambia ChildFund Guinea ChildFund Ethiopia ChildFund Mozambique Victor Kamara

#COP29 should serve as a platform for the realization of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) General Comment 26, emphasizing the rights of children in the context of environmental and climate justice. Ensuring inclusive participation of children in all climate actions is crucial for integrating human rights-based approaches in climate strategies. Here are some reflections from COP 28 through the eyes of those most impacted - our children, as they call for more meaningful participation of children in these high-level forums. #COP29 #ClimateJustice #UNCRC #ChildrensVoices #ChildRights #ChildParticipation
