What is the future of sustainable finance in #SierraLeone and what industries and types of green projects are most attractive to lenders or investors? These were some of the questions covered in a recent survey conducted by Invest Salone to gain important insights from Sierra Leone’s financial sector on the drivers of sustainable finance in the country, as well as predictions on the type of private sector-led projects most likely to mobilise green finance. The survey followed a series of seminars that gathered 28 financial professionals and regulators to explore the alignment of the financial sector with sustainability goals. The roundtable was part of a programme of activities organised by the Africa Resilience Investment Accelerator (ARIA) and Invest Salone, for a delegation of international investors visiting Sierra Leone to explore opportunities in the infrastructure and sustainable tourism sectors. From ecotourism and undiscovered beaches to a rich culture and history, Sierra Leone offers many unique tourism opportunities. This morning, representatives from the tourism sector met with international investors to discuss sector challenges and how to overcome them, including through improved access to finance and investment in reliable infrastructure, electricity and water supply. The delegation were hosted at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, located in one of Sierra Leone's stunning national parks. This week, Sierra Leone welcomes a significant delegation of international investors to explore opportunities in the infrastructure and sustainable tourism sectors and engage with government officials and entrepreneurs. This visit is likely the largest of its kind in the country’s recent history. The trip is being led by the Africa Resilience Investment Accelerator (ARIA) – a platform that aims to unlock investment in markets across the continent, including Sierra Leone – with support from Invest Salone, the British High Commission, the National Investment Board, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Expertise to Support Economic Reform Programme. It brings together representatives from eight development finance institutions. The organisations involved include British International Investment, FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, the IFC - International Finance Corporation, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, Proparco, the African Development Bank Group, and more.
