African states are set to invest billions of pounds in upgrading their rail infrastructure as part of an ambitious bold new vision for the continent. One major project underway is the African Integrated High-Speed Railway Network (AIHSRN). Its main objective is to connect Africa's capital cities and major commercial hubs with an interoperable high-speed railway network to boost continental trade and competition. #Egypt has already started to build its high speed rail network that is estimated to cost a whopping £7billion. Connecting 60 cities, the high speed rail lines will run for 2,000km (1,243 miles). Once completed it will be the sixth largest high-speed rail system in the world. The German company #Siemens is set to provide 41 Velaro eight car high-speed trains, 94 Desiro high-capacity four car regional train sets and 41 Vectron freight locomotives. In September the company unveiled its first Velaro high-speed train for Egypt at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin. The eight-car high-speed train is 200 meters long and boasts Business and Standard class compartments, along with a restaurant carriage. The train is designed for comfort and has a capacity of 481 passengers (479 seats and two wheelchair spaces), on-board internet and power sockets. It can reach speeds of up to 250km/h (155 mph) and is built to withstand the unique environmental challenges in Egypt. To cope with high temperatures, #sand, and dust, the Velaro Egypt train has been equipped with special features. Exterior gaps have been sealed using covers or brushes, to minimise the ingress of sand and dust. Advanced filter systems have also been installed in the #air guiding components to maintain clean air. At the unveiling of the train, the CEO of Siemens Mobility -Michael Peter- said: "The presentation of the first Velaro high-speed train is a significant milestone as we work to deliver sustainable rail travel for the Egyptian people. First gas flows at GTA!! I am thrilled to announce that the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project has reached a monumental milestone: gas is flowing! This milestone marks the beginning of Phase 1 gas flowing to the GTA floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, paving the way for the next steps in commissioning and our journey toward first liquefied natural gas (LNG). As one of Africa’s deepest offshore developments, with gas resources in water depths of up to 2,850 meters, once fully commissioned, GTA Phase 1 is expected to produce around 2.3 million tonnes of LNG per year. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this achievement possible, particularly the Mauritanian and Senegalese governments, our GTA partners, SMH, Kosmos Energy, PETROSEN, and the communities of both nations. Special acknowledgment to our teams for their relentless dedication and resilience, and their continuous commitment to safety throughout the project’s journey. Ghana gears up for President-elect Mahama’s inauguration on Tuesday. Here’s what to know and who’s attending. Ghana is gearing up for the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the iconic Black Star Square in #Accra. The grand ceremony is set to draw both national and international attention, with preparations at full throttle to host a distinguished array of guests. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson for the John Dramani Mahama Transition Team, announced that “so far, 10 heads of state have confirmed their participation” in the inauguration. In addition, the event will host two vice presidents, one speaker of parliament, two former presidents, and several heads of international organisations, including representatives from the #Commonwealth and the #AfricanDevelopmentBank. #Nigeria’s Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, #Kenya’s Pres. William Ruto, #Botswana’s Pres. Duma Gideon Boko, #Namibia’s Pres. Nangolo Mbumba, #Liberia’s Pres. Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr, and delegations from the #EuropeanUnion, the #UnitedStates, and the #UnitedKingdom have publicly affirmed their attendance. The Black Star Square is undergoing meticulous preparations to serve as the backdrop for this momentous occasion. Ofosu emphasized the meticulous arrangements being made to create a visually stunning venue for the ceremony. Furthermore, the swearing-in ceremony will also function as a parliamentary session, necessitating Parliament to temporarily relocate its activities to the Square. Access to the swearing-in area will be strictly controlled, with entry restricted to invited guests presenting their invitation cards. To uphold security measures, the Ministry of #NationalSecurity has issued a directive prohibiting the use of private #drones within the vicinity of the #BlackStarSquare during the inauguration. This precautionary step aligns with the heightened #security protocols aimed at safeguarding the safety of all attendees. The event's schedule mandates guests to be seated by 8:30 am, followed by the arrival of the Speaker of Parliament who will accompany the President-elect and Vice President-elect to the Chamber for the commencement of proceedings at 11 am.
