Pildo Labs organised a two-day training session on GNSS Performance Monitoring and Interference Detection (Nov 19-20, 2024). The event offered a unique opportunity to learn directly from some industry key players already using Pildo Lab’s OWL platform, like the Spain ANSP ENAIRE, who explained how they utilize it to enhance their GNSS monitoring capabilities in Spain. SatNav Africa JPO attended this event and was happy to see Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), TANZANIA CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY(TCAA) (TCAA), and ASECNA, Agence pour la Sécurité de la Navigation Aérienne en Afrique et à Madagascar also in attendance. Thank you to Pildo Labs for advancing capacity building on GNSS monitoring services on the African continent. #Aviation #GNSSmonitoring #PerformanceBasedNavigation #AviationSafety #GNSSmonitoringservices #GNSSPerformanceMonitoring #GNSScapacitybuilding

Building together satellite navigation services for Africa
About us
The Satellite Navigation in Africa Support Programme III - Joint Programme Office (JPO) is championing the development of Satellite Navigation in Africa. It is a component of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES) on regional integration and trade, aiming primarily at enhancing safety in the domain of civil aviation by the introduction of satellite navigation in Africa. Our role is to ensure the development of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and the implementation and adoption of Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) services across the African continent. Our missions are coordinate and support: 1. The implementation of seamless and sustainable satellite navigation solutions in all sectors with aviation as a main driver; 2. The development of satellite navigation in Africa in key sectors with aviation as a main springboard. Our project has two Components: 1. Technical support and capacity building for regional and continental actors to accelerate the development of regional SBAS modules and the integration of SBAS into continental policies and planning; 2. Supporting the adoption and use of GNSS services and the development of related applications and markets in Africa European space programmes. The services we undertake are: 1. Support to GNSS/SBAS services Implementation 2. Support to GNSS/SBAS applications development 3. Support to promotion and communication of GNSS/SBAS services 4. Training and capacity building on GNSS/SBAS 5. R&D and specific support services (in development) We are supported by the European Commission and ASECNA and we are established since 2013 at Dakar/Senegal

Today, ASLI in partnership with the Nigerian Embassy in Addis Ababa and the Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) organised a "Space Briefing." The objectives were to: (1) bring the diplomatic and scientific communities to begin engagement with each other; (2) enlighten African countries about the benefits of space and why Africa needs to invest in space; (3) promote intra-African and international cooperation. Addis Ababa fits to be declared as the 'Space Diplomacy Capital for Africa'. Addis Ababa hosts the headquarters of the African Union (AU) and its secretariat - the African Union Commission (AUC). Virtually all the 55 African countries have embassies in Addis Ababa; the heads of these missions form the Permanent Representative Council (PRC), which is one of the policy organs of the AU. Addis Ababa also hosts the regional offices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the The International Astronomical Union IAU Office of Astronomy for Development, as well as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). These organisations have interests in the four thematic priority areas of the African Outer Space Programme. Furthermore, Addis Ababa hosts several international organisations that presently utilise or could utilise outer-space to achieve their mandates and goals. We thank the following colleagues for their briefs: - Earth observation: Mahaman Bachir Saley (Coordinator, GMES Africa) - Satellite communication: Timothy Ashong (Director General, Regional African Satellite Communications Organization) - Navigation and Positioning: Semou DIOUF (Director, SatNav Africa JPO) - Astronomy: Alemiye Mamo (Director, East Africa Regional Office of IAU Office of Astronomy for Development) - Space Economy: Mustapha Iderawumi (Senior Analyst, Space in Africa) - Education and Capacity Building: Etim Offiong (Cofounder, ASLI) We thank the AUC (represented by Mahaman Bachir Saley) and UNECA (represented by Andre Nonguierma) for their support. We also thank all the missions, universities, organisations and media houses, that were represented. After the Space Briefing, we welcomed 11 participants from Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda, to the course on "Maximising International Space Cooperation." The course is aimed at equipping professionals, policy makers and representatives, with the knowledge and skills needed for space cooperation and diplomacy. It will also provide an opportunity for participants to gain knowledge in formulating policy and governance frameworks to promote responsible, sustainable, and inclusive participation in space activities. More information about the course is available here: https://lnkd.in/eDhSF_ej We are grateful to H.E. Dr. Yeshurun Alemayehu ADDE (Deputy Minister, Ministry of Innovation And Technology- Ethiopia) for supporting the initiatives, for participating in the Space Briefing and for declaring the course open.
