🌍 Celebrating 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲: Measure, Monitor, Manage 🌱 Today, we celebrate World Soil Day under the theme: ‘Measure, Monitor, Manage’. Soil information and data are crucial for effective soil resource management. While soil data provides raw measurements, soil information offers interpreted and synthesized data for practical applications and policy-making. 🔍 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫: They form the foundation for understanding soil characteristics, assessing soil health and productivity, and improving soil management. Soil is vital for food and water security, biodiversity, and climate change mitigation. 👩🌾 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝: Smallholder farmers, Indigenous Peoples, and Local Communities (IPLC) are the true guardians of the land. They integrate ecological resilience, social responsibility, and combine generational wisdom with modern practices to ensure the care and conservation of the land. However, they face numerous challenges. 🤝 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝: 🌻 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: Through climate finance, development finance, agroecology, agrobiodiversity, or any other expenditure on conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of soil. Farmers and their organizations should be recognized as #partners, not just beneficiaries. 🌻 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Farmer-led innovation in agroecology, agrobiodiversity conservation, and local seed systems. 🌻 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬: Conducive policies and practical approaches that support the involvement of farmers' organizations, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities in decision-making processes. Over the past 10 years, this program has trained 105 500 young Malagasy people, including more than 50 000 women. 🌍 In the remote villages of Madagascar, with limited access to educational resources, FORMAPROD has transformed the young people life by providing professional training and apprenticeships in a large variety of agriculture sub-sectors. In 2023, FORMAPROD was honored with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Gender Awards for its exceptional contributions to gender equality and the empowerment of young women.
