Barber, John Warner, 1798-1885

Engraver (of both copper and wood), topographical draftsman, and historian. Born February 2, 1798 in East Windsor, Conn.; apprenticed to Abner Reed, engraver; operated his own engraving business in New Haven; studied history and traveled the eastern U.S., gathering information for the books which he wrote and then illustrated with his engravings; died in New Haven on June 22, 1885.

John Warner Barber (1798-1885) was an American printmaker, author, and publisher born in East Windsor, Connecticut. He is best known for books on state, national, and local history, in which his engravings caught the flavor and appearance of city, town, and countryside in his day.

John Warner Barber, engraver and historian, was born in 1798 and raised in East Windsor, Conn.

Following an apprenticeship to a bank-note engraver, Barber opened his own engraving business in 1823 in New Haven, Conn. Later he began to personally collect information relative to the local histories of various eastern states. Barber produced numerous local and regional histories between 1827 and 1865 illustrated with his own copperplate engravings. He was also much taken with the teachings of the gospel and produced several religious works. He died in New Haven in 1885.
