Kirkland, Joseph, 1770-1844.
Lawyer and politician.
Nephew of Oneida missionary Samuel Kirkland, Joseph Kirkland, a Yale graduate trained in the law, settled in 1794 near his uncle in New Hartford, Oneida County, N.Y., and began to practice law. He served as a Federalist representative in the state assembly before moving to Utica, where he held numerous lacal, state, and national political offices.
