Variant names"George R. Gilmer, a two-time Georgia governor during the 1830s, is best known for his successful efforts to remove the Cherokees from the state. He was also a state legislator, a U.S. congressman, and an army officer during the War of 1812 (1812-15). At various times in his life, Gilmer also served as a teacher, an author, a historian, a lawyer, and a trustee of the University of Georgia. U.S. Army soldier and governor of George from 1829 to 1831.
Gilmer fought the Creek Indians from 1813 to 1815, and later served two terms as governor of Georgia, 1829-1831 and 1837-1839. In defiance of a U.S. Supreme Court order, Gilmer forced the 14,000 Creek and Cherokee Indians still remaining in Georgia to follow the "Trail of Tears" west to Indian (Oklahoma) Territory for relocation.
