Chouteau, A. P. (Auguste Pierre), 1786-1838.
Fur trader and diplomat.
Born in St. Louis and educated at West Point, A.P. Chouteau entered the fur trade business in 1807. In 1823 he purchased the trading house of Brand and Barbour at the convergence of the Verdigris, Arkansas, and Grand rivers in what would become Indian Territory. By 1830 Chouteau dominated the trade in that region, where he resided until his death in 1838.
