Charles Francis McCay was born in Pennsylvania on March 8, 1810. Educated at Princeton, he began his teaching career at Lafayette College. He married Narcissa Williams in August 1840. From 1833 until 1853 when elected to be the chair of mathematics at the University of South Carolina, Professor McCay taught philosophy, civil engineering, and mathematics at the University of Georgia. He died in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 13, 1889.

Mathemetician and actuary.
Born and educated in Pennsylvania, McCay taught mathematics at the University of Georgia in Athens (1833-1853) and at South Carolina College, where he also became president (1853-1857). He is known for his pioneering work in the development of actuarial tables.
