Oman has officially announced the establishment of the Oman Net Zero Center, a new initiative aimed at helping the Sultanate achieve its ambitious goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. His Excellency Eng. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, made the announcement through Ministerial Decision No. (35-2024), which outlines the center’s key role in formulating strategies, overseeing energy efficiency projects, and providing technical support to both government and private sectors.

In a statement, Eng. Salim emphasized that the center was established in response to royal directives from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said. “The decision to establish the Oman Net Zero Center comes in implementation of the royal directives to supervise and follow up on zero neutrality plans and programs, contributing actively to energy efficiency and supporting entities to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050,” he said.

Oman has demonstrated a strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency through the creation of clear strategies and innovative projects. The launch of the Oman Net Zero Center marks another important step in the country’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a leader in sustainability.

The center will be tasked with enhancing energy consumption efficiency, developing and updating national plans, and monitoring the implementation of energy-saving measures. Additionally, it will provide technical support to reduce carbon emissions, facilitate the adoption of international best practices, and encourage innovation in the energy sector.

Furthermore, the Oman Net Zero Center will manage certification processes for low-carbon products and services, ensuring that they comply with national and international standards. The center will also oversee the trading of carbon certificates and maintain a comprehensive inventory of carbon emissions from various sources, allowing for greater transparency and accountability.

Oman’s commitment to sustainability is expected to be further strengthened as the Oman Net Zero Center works to engage the public and mobilize support for the country’s net-zero goals, positioning Oman as a key player in the global effort to combat climate change.
