What Does Denim’s Eco-Future Look Like?

Denim’s classic appeal has been rock steady for over 150 years, but industry advances have been moving fast and furiously behind the scenes. With sustainability always at the core, innovations have birthed new fibers, non-toxic dye pigments, gentler laundry processes, waterless finishes, fresh recycling methods, circularity developments, and new ideas to close the loop. Even A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio have gotten involved in new solutions.

The key is strong collaboration among the industry’s most forward thinkers.

With 70 years of experience, Turkish denim mill Orta has been working closely with Nature Coatings’s new BioBlack TX non-toxic black pigment and Renewcell‘s circular fibers, and it recently developed a more sustainable fabric inspired by Biodesign Challenge (BDC)—a global program that connects university students with bioengineers, industries, businesses and experts to redesign products and conventional systems with a biology-inspired point of view.

“It’s exciting to see different solutions happening in our industry, but of course we want things happening faster,” said Dr. Sedef Uncu Aki, Director, Orta. “But things are happening, which is very exciting.”
