Summer Denim Trend: Popover Shirts

Gen Zer’s love for Y2K fashion made the denim corset a must-have for several seasons. Pamcore—the viral trend inspired by Pamela Anderson’s ’90s Cali style—gave bleached denim button-down shirts their moments in the spotlight. Now the Western denim shirt is seeing a spike in interest, thanks to pop culture icons reigniting a cowboy fashion trend.

There’s another style of denim tops waiting in the shadow, however.

The denim popover shirt—a long-sleeve, half-button top with a relaxed fit—has been cropping up in women’s runway collections for the past year.

The easy and versatile top was recently seen in Gucci’s Cruise 2025 show in London, leaning into a gardening aesthetic with deep front pockets and tunic length.

The top captured the effortless, vacation vibe of Plan C’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection. The Italian brand styled its oversized 100 percent cotton popover with an adjustable split hem two different ways—with baggy jeans for a laidback look and as a chic beach coverup.

Buttons on the sleeves of Tanya Taylor’s denim popup add to the style’s versatility. The wide sleeves can be unbuttoned to create a cape-like silhouette.

Other designers like Chanel are opting for more cropped versions. The French fashion house showed decorated the collar of its popover with belt loops.

Denim popovers are already making an impression in the mass market. Rag & Bone offers a soft terry popover that looks like denim in two washes. J. Crew sells a women’s cropped style made with chambray. Ralph Lauren and Todd Synder offer men’s collared versions.
