A device is online if:

• It’s turned on

• It’s either connected to a data network (such as 3G, 4G, 5G or LTE), or the internet using Wi-Fi or Ethernet

AirPods must also be out of their case and in range of one of your iOS or iPadOS devices. AirPods are in range within about 33 feet (10 metres).
