Android Auto disconnect issue on Pixel 9 Pro

Hi all, since I switched to a new phone (Google Pixel 9 Pro) I'm consistently having issues connecting to Android Auto. I can pair and connect to my car fine, but after anywhere between a couple of seconds and a couple of minutes Android Auto will be disconnected without error. The car will stop recognizing Android Auto, but the phone will continue charging. I can reconnect only by physically plugging out the cable and plugging it back in, but that will not solve the problem and a new disconnection will re-occur when I do.

Android Auto works fine in my car with multiple other devices, including my old Pixel 6 Pro. I have tried changing my connection settings, resetting the app multiple times (force stop, reinstall, etc), and resetting my car settings, none of this helps.

Any ideas what may cause this and how I can troubleshoot or fix it?

Let's Troubleshoot Your Android Auto Disconnection Issue
Understanding the Problem:
It seems you're facing consistent disconnection issues with Android Auto on your Google Pixel 9 Pro and Mitsubishi Space Star.
Troubleshooting Steps:
  1. Check Android Auto Settings:
    • Permissions: Ensure Android Auto has the necessary permissions to access your phone's connections and data.
    • Compatibility: Verify that your car's infotainment system is compatible with the latest Android Auto version.
  2. Car-Specific Settings:
    • Android Auto Integration: Check your car's settings to ensure Android Auto is properly integrated and enabled.
    • USB Mode: Ensure your car is set to USB mode for Android Auto.
  3. USB Cable:
    • Compatibility: Use a high-quality USB cable that supports data transfer.
    • Connection: Double-check the USB connection between your phone and car, ensuring it's secure.
  4. Third-Party Apps:
    • Disable Apps: Temporarily disable any third-party apps that might be interfering with Android Auto.
  5. Restart Devices:
    • Phone and Car: Restart both your phone and your car to refresh their systems.
  6. Check for Updates:
    • Android Auto and Car Software: Ensure both Android Auto and your car's infotainment system are up-to-date.
  7. Contact Support:
    • Android Auto: Reach out to Android Auto support for specific troubleshooting advice.
    • Mitsubishi Support: Contact Mitsubishi's customer support for assistance with any potential issues related to your car's infotainment system.
Remember to provide more details if you continue to have issues. Let me know if you've tried any of the troubleshooting steps mentioned above and if you're receiving any error messages.

Same problem, Pixel 9 Pro, wired only.  Older Pixel 5 and new iPhone 16 works with the same cable.

I have had a partial success in getting AA to work.  When I connect the phone to my car, the phone will show that it's connected via USB in the notifications screen but it doesn't launch AA.

Now click on that notification for USB and it will take you to the USB Preferences screen, as per the screenshot below.  For some reason, the default is "No data transfer".  Change that to "File Transfer / Android Auto", and AA will finally be available on your car's head unit.  Yay!

However....  This setting doesn't persist.  If you disconnect the cable, it will revert to "No data transfer" next time it's plugged in and you have to repeat the steps above.  Not an ideal solution, but it's at least partially successful and the bug is repeatable.

I am facing the same issue on my Pixel 9 Pro XL since its launch on Android 14.  Currently, I am on Android 15, and wired Android Auto is still not working correctly. My Pixel 8 Pro and older Android phones work flawlessly; only the Pixel 9 Pro XL has this issue.

Based on my observations, I believe the problem may lies with the Pixel 9 software, not the Android Auto software. File transfer to my infotainment unit has the same issue: it constantly connects and disconnects simultaneously. This also happens with Android Auto, and my notification history is filled with "Android Auto Connected" and "Disconnected" messages. The Pixel 9 software seems to drop the connection with certain devices, which doesn't happen with older devices. This is the reason why file transfer and Android Auto is not working correctly with my infotainment. Google, please raise this issue with the Pixel 9 software team, not just the Android Auto team. Please address this issue as it's very disruptive to my driving life not being able to use Android Auto which is extremely useful and friendly to drivers.

Identical issue.

Google Pixel 7 owner for the last 2 years. Have spent an absolute fortune on different cables to try and resolve the issue.

Bought a new Pixel 9 Pro last month, identical issues already.

Absolutely dreadful from Google that this still hasn't been fixed given the number of users with the same issues.

Wireless worked fine with Pixel 7 and android 14.  Now with Pixel 9 and Android 15, A doesn't appear on car screen at all wireless even tho pairing and connecting are done.  Works ok with cable to usb port...

I have the same problem. Using USB to connect to a Toyota Camry. Didn't have a problem prior to the Android 15 update.

Used the same cable and had no issues with a Pixel 6 on Android 14. Is there a possible defect in Android 15?

I've had this same issue twice. Both times, I did a software update in my van and then gone to the connected devices and deleted all phones listed. Then, upon reconnecting my phone, it gives the prompt to connect and works again.

I'm having the exact same problem with my Pixel 8 Pro (as well as my wife's Pixel 8 Pro). This is for my 2022 Mazda CX 5

'24 F250. I had a 9PXL. No disconnecting for me, but when connected to Ford Sync, it sucked.  Stuttering and laggy responses to touches. I returned the phone. I need the android auto or CarPlay experience to be top notch. Especially Google Maps. A shame. I really liked the phone otherwise. When connecting my Dad's base S23, Google Maps and Waze were smooth like butter. Maybe get rid of the Tensor, Google.

I have the issue that my Pixel 9 pro disconnects from android auto randomly or when a barely touch the USB cable at the phone.  This is the same with new or older USB cables.  Even spending a bit more on a more expensive cable didn't help.  This is happening in both of my vehicles that have Android Auto. The phone continues to charge but Android Auto disconnects and I have to disconnect, then reconnect for it to work again (for a short time).

Could this also affect Sony Xperia devices? I'm having exactly this issue and I think it only started a few months ago. My Suzuki Vitara (Europe) is 6 months old so I thought maybe it is the car at fault but having read this forum then it might be AA at fault instead.

My phone is Xperia 5 II on Android 12 security update 1 October 2022. I am on beta AA versions (with a new version installed today but not tested as yet).

The wireless media stuff since october has been pretty choppy. Android auto will disconnect randomly if I'm not wired. And in my other car with bluetooth only, i get random drops in audio occasionally, and the output on the head unit that shows artist, title etc even goes away for a second. Pixel 9 Pro XL. 2023 Ford F-150 for the wireless android auto, and 2014 Mazda CX-9 for the standard bluetooth. Not the best flagship experience...
