Summarize conversations in Google Chat

Users with Google Workspace accounts can use conversation summaries that automatically appear in spaces with many unread messages. Some users can request summaries of unread conversations in Home.

Turn conversation summaries in spaces on & off

To stay updated on long, unread conversations in spaces where you’re a member, use conversation summaries. When you turn on conversation summaries, they automatically:

  • Appear when necessary in conversations.

  • Summarize conversations in English.

Important: Conversation summaries are only available for Google Workspace accounts.

Turn conversation summary on & off in Google Chat
  1. On your computer, open Google Chat.
  2. Click Settings  and then Conversation summary.
  3. Check or uncheck the box next to “Show summaries in spaces with many unread messages.”

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. Click Settings  and then See all settings and then Chat and Meet.
  3. Click Manage chat settings and then Conversation summary.
  4. Check or uncheck the box next to “Show summaries in spaces with many unread messages.”

Use Gemini summaries for unread conversations in Home

Important: This feature is available to users on work or school accounts through a Gemini for Google Workspace add-on. Learn about Gemini features and plans.

You can use Gemini to show summaries for unread conversations that include group messages, spaces, and threads. Summaries aren't available for:

  • 1:1 conversations
  • Bot messages
  • Conversations with history turned off

Tip: To enable conversation and space summaries in Home, turn on smart features in Gmail.

You can choose to summarize a specific unread conversation or space in Home.

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Chat in Gmail.
  2. Hover over the conversation or space you want to summarize in Home.
  3. Click Summarize.

Give feedback on generated output

Gemini for Google Workspace is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request. Because feedback may be human readable, please do not submit data that contains personal, confidential, or sensitive information.

If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.

  1. At the bottom of the generated output, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  2. In the pop-up window, you can select the data you want to share along with your feedback, including additional context and outputs. If you don’t want to share certain data, you can uncheck it.
    • If you select Bad suggestion , select Next to select the issue you found and enter additional feedback.
  3. Click Submit.
