🎥📸🌱✨Capturing Culture, Crafting Mangrove Futures: Storytelling in Action🌱✨🎥📸 From December 1-3, 2024, we had the incredible opportunity to deliver a Storytelling Workshop for the Mangrove Community Network in Southern Thailand. The workshop brought together 14 passionate participants (2 male, 12 female) from five coastal villages across Krabi and Trang provinces, each carrying unique stories and rich cultural heritage. Through hands-on sessions, the participants explored the foundations of storytelling and gained practical skills in storytelling through photography and short video creation, learning to craft compelling narratives that showcase their communities' knowledge, culture, traditions, and connection to nature. 🎥📸🌿 💡 Key Highlights: 🌟 Engaging discussions and interactive activities focused on storytelling through photos and videos. 🌿 Tailored knowledge and skills to spotlight their community, cultural and environmental stories. 📖 Participants confidently took their first steps toward advancing their storytelling skills and sharing their community's unique narratives with authenticity and impact. The energy, dedication, and enthusiasm of everyone involved were truly inspiring. This workshop represents a meaningful step forward in amplifying local voices and sharing narratives and collaboration for mangrove conservation. This workshop served as a powerful platform for empowering women to enhance their skills and leadership in sharing the stories of their communities, the impacts of climate change, and their rich Indigenous culture and knowledge. 🌿✨ We feel deeply connected and are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of this event–especially the Romphothi Foundation staff, women participants who were representatives from various Indigenous groups, and the women leaders of Ban Mae Sao for demonstrating their food preservation techniques for our practical session. 🙏 #IndigenousWomen #IndigenousKnowledge #Storytelling #K4D

During this workshop, we witnessed the dedication, creativity, and skills of the Indigenous women from the Kok River Basin. One of the most proud moments was a short video they created to share a food story about "Fermented Soybeans... Are They Really That Bad?" through the perspective of a visit to the Tai Yai community in Ban Mae Sao, Mae Ai district. Fermented soybeans 🫘, or “Tua Nao” in Thai, might not sound appetizing at first, but once you taste them, you'll discover their rich umami flavor and the unique culinary tradition of northern Thailand. Not only do they preserve food, but the process of making them is fascinating—whether it's cooking, shaping into sheets, or drying them. Each step brings out the distinctive flavor cherished by the Tai Yai people. Last week in Chiang Mai, Open Development Initiative (ODI) and Knowledge for Development Foundation (#K4D) had the incredible opportunity to deliver a Data Literacy training for an inspiring group of Indigenous Peoples. We were joined by 12 passionate participants—4 women and 8 men—representing a range of organizations, including IPF, IMPECT, WISE, UHDF, ECHA, and PASD. The focus of this training was to strengthen data skills among Indigenous youth and representatives, enabling them to understand and use data for advocacy, decision-making, driving sustainable community development, and preserving cultural heritage. It was a heartwarming experience to witness the participants’ enthusiasm and commitment to applying the knowledge gained in meaningful ways within their communities. A huge thank you to all the participants for their active engagement, and to the organizations that made this training possible and successful. The knowledge, empowerment, and ideas gained during this training will undoubtedly have a lasting and positive impact in the future! At the recent Indigenous Voices in Asia Network (IVAN) Exchange, organized by Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact and supported by East-West Management Institute and Open Society Foundations, participants from across the Asia-Pacific region highlighted initiatives focused on reviving indigenous languages, advocating for justice in reporting, and utilizing social media platforms to share their stories.
