✅Thailand’s Environmental Lessons from 2024: A Path Toward Sustainability in 2025 As 2024 comes to a close, Thailand faces significant environmental challenges, from air pollution to climate impacts. Dr.Wijarn Simachaya, President of the Thailand Environment Institute Foundation (TEI), has summarized the key lessons from this year and outlined critical trends for 2025. 🔆2024: A Year of Environmental Challenges 1. Air Pollution from PM2.5 The northern and northeastern regions experienced severe air pollution caused by agricultural burning, including transboundary haze from neighboring countries. In central Thailand, emissions from open-field burning, industrial activities, and urban traffic worsened air quality. 2. Waste Management Crisis Tourism recovery has led to an increase in waste, with annual volumes rising to 28-29 million tons, compared to 24-25 million tons pre-COVID. Poorly managed waste, particularly plastics, risks polluting waterways and oceans, with long-term consequences for ecosystems and human health. 3. Climate Change Impacts Thailand saw extreme weather patterns, including droughts early in the year and widespread flooding later. These events highlighted the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters, requiring substantial resources for recovery. 🌐Global Environmental Concerns Globally, three key environmental issues continue to dominate: • Climate Change: Record-high global temperatures and extreme weather events driven by El Niño and La Niña cycles. • Biodiversity Loss: Habitat destruction and climate impacts threaten ecosystems worldwide. • Pollution: Rising CO2 levels, now at 420 ppm compared to pre-industrial levels of 280 ppm, underscore the urgent need for action. ✳️2025: A Year of Energy Transition and Sustainability Focus 1. The Rise of Clean Energy The shift to renewable energy will play a crucial role in 2025. Solar energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and emerging technologies like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are gaining traction globally. However, balancing energy security and environmental preservation remains a critical challenge. 2. Carbon Credit Markets Carbon credits are becoming central to sustainable trade and investment. Thailand is developing clearer regulations to ensure fair and effective carbon trading, both domestically and internationally. 3. Ambitious Climate Goals Thailand is committed to achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero emissions by 2065. Achieving these targets requires collaborative efforts across all sectors, including expanding green spaces to absorb over 120 million tons of CO2 annually. As part of the global effort under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Thailand must continue its focus on climate adaptation and mitigation strategies to meet its goals and contribute to a sustainable future. #Sustainability #EnvironmentalChallenges #NetZero #GreenThailand #EnergyTransition

Driving Digital Transformation in Thai Public Health: Insights from My Work with the Department of Disease Control A few months ago, I had the privilege of engaging with the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Department of Thailand’s Department of Disease Control. This partnership builds on years of collaboration aimed at digitally transforming the department—and ultimately, the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand — to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of Thailand’s world-renowned healthcare system. Thailand’s healthcare system stands as a global model, balancing accessibility, affordability, and quality. Its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) allows patients to directly consult specialists without long waits—a rarity even among developed nations. Yet, the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases presents a critical challenge requiring innovative solutions. Three Key Drivers of Digital Transformation for Better Public Health Outcomes: 1️⃣ People-Centric Design: Transformation starts with people. By focusing on training, equipping, and empowering healthcare professionals and community workers, we can bridge the gap between technology and service delivery. This ensures digital tools are intuitive and impactful, particularly for preventive care in NCD management. 2️⃣ Public-Private Partnerships: Leveraging collaborations across sectors can accelerate innovation. Our joint efforts emphasize integrating private-sector technologies and resources with public healthcare expertise to create scalable, sustainable digital health solutions. 3️⃣ Data-Driven Decision Making: Tackling NCDs effectively requires actionable insights. By harnessing real-time data, we can identify patterns, allocate resources efficiently, and implement interventions that address root causes. Data empowers us to respond faster and more effectively to public health challenges. For us at Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) of Thailand and the Smart City Thailand Office, digital transformation is more than a tech upgrade—it’s a paradigm shift to improve lives. I’m honored to contribute to Thailand’s journey toward a future where technology amplifies the strengths of its healthcare system, ensuring it remains a beacon of excellence and accessibility. Let’s work together to create a healthier tomorrow. #DigitalTransformation #PublicHealth #HealthcareInnovation #NCDs #Thailand #SmartCities
